We do have an opportunity to act quick and ensure that support is available for anyone experiencing the harm that can be caused through gambling. Holistic accountability is required and a continued raw honesty about what we are seeing and the impact being felt by people, family’s, communities and systems. I’ve worked within the sector for 18 months and the demand for support continues to increase as we come to terms with what the evidence has been telling us for a while. #HumanityFirst #MentalHealthMatters #PublicHealth https://lnkd.in/e9KvhSKK

According to the Gambling Survey for Great Britain (GSGB), which questioned almost 10,000 people, it is estimated that 2.5% of adults have struggled with "problem gambling". This would equate to 1.3 million problem gamblers, though the report’s authors cautioned there was a risk that the data could be an overestimate. #gambling #gamblers #problemgamblers #addiction #GamblingSurveyforGreatBritain #mentalhealth #mentalhealthawareness #mentalhealthmatters #mentalwellbeing

Preventing Avoidable Harm to Children Would parents intentionally give their child something that would harm them?. The answer we are all likely to give is "No". Why then do some parents let their children gamble on their app, or encourage them to gamble? The likely answer to this is because they don't really understand the true level of risk they are introducing their children too. Adverts say gambling is fun, just a bit of entertainment, so why not let your child join in. This however is where the failure by government and the gambling regulator comes in. Yes, there are references to "stopping gambling when the fun stops, etc". in gambling company adverts. These bodies and the industry will reference them. But, they are of little value. So was I surprised to read the recent data on the growing number of children who are suffering with gambling disorder? , NO!! For those who want to know more then have a read of this article: https://lnkd.in/etKc3Gks Sir Keir Starmer, Wes Streeting, and other government officials, stop talking about this data and TAKE ACTION. Until, gambling operators are legally held accountable for gambling harm, an "Addiction by Design", then only more children will be harmed. Prevention to improve the country's populations health and well-being is a word apparently high on the governments agenda. Well prove it. Put stricter controls and responsibilities on gambling companies. Increase prevention health warnings around the potential harm of gambling. Put these adverts on at peak TV times and reduce gambling adverts. It isn't that hard. It just requires common sense and a willingness to act. #populationhealth #gamblingharm #labourparty #primeminister #healthsecretary Kishan Patel #gamblingcommission #sirkeirstarmer #wesstreeting lesley buckland Andy Ryan #safeguarding

💷 The Cost of Gambling Harm 💷 ✍ When you look into Public Health England's research looking at the "public health harms associated with gambling and the economic and social burden", you can see why it is such an important reason for awareness to be raised at a population level as it has a direct impact on the taxpayer. 🤯 They concluded that gambling-related harms have considerable cost to the government and society, likely between £1.05 to 1.77 BILLION. ➡ Unemployment Benefits - £77m ➡ Imprisonment - £167m ➡ Homelessness - £49m ➡ Mental & Physical Health Harms - £1,475b 🗣 I've long advocated that the financial impacts of an individuals harm to gambling should not be vocalised in isolation, due to this being unhelpful when you need to take into account the wider impacts. With that being said, when we look at gambling harms on a broader societal level, the financial impacts need louder coverage. 📄 https://lnkd.in/eDKk3a8r #gambling #government #health #homelessness #mentalhealth #unemployment #publichealth

This Safer Gambling Week, we are reflecting on our experiences conducting research into gambling-related harms and the positive outcomes that support and preventative approaches can bring about for people at risk of these harms. The rise in popularity of online and mobile gambling means it is now possible to gamble anywhere and anytime. This level of accessibility can increase the risks of gambling harms, particularly for young people who are especially susceptible to them. According to the Gambling Commission's Young People and Gambling 2024 report, 27% of 11 to 17 year olds in Britain had spent their own money on gambling in the 12 months prior to taking part in the survey. These behaviours can lead to some people experiencing issues with finances and debt and problems related to mental wellbeing. Significant challenges exist around raising awareness, reducing stigma and preventing and addressing gambling harms, and our clients at Ygam and GamCare offer crucial support to help those experiencing these harms and to inform healthcare professionals, educators, money advice services and community leaders about how best to approach gambling-related issues. Our impact evaluation report for GamCare demonstrated the importance of cross-sector work to address financial harm and debt that gambling often causes. The UK government just announced major updates to its gambling regulations, focusing on protecting players and tackling gambling harm. 🔒 Here’s what’s new: ➡️ New statutory levy: Expected to raise £100m+ annually for addiction treatment, public health campaigns, and research. ➡️ Slot stake limits: Online slots to be capped at £5 per spin for players 25+ and £2 for those aged 18-24. These changes are designed to protect vulnerable players, especially young adults. But not everyone’s happy—critics argue this could push more people toward unregulated gambling sites. ⚠️ What do you think? Will these measures make a real difference? The UK gambling industry, a £15.1 billion giant, is booming, with online revenue growth at an alarming 7.4% and a staggering £972.5 million spent on advertising while entertaining millions. But for those trapped in addiction, it's a nightmare. Compulsive gambling is a silent crisis. Recent figures from the Gambling Commission suggest that the number of adults in Great Britain experiencing problem gambling could be as high as 2.5%, or approximately 1.3 million individuals – a far cry from the previously reported 0.3%. We're a community empowering those harmed by gambling to take back control. Our Focus: Data-Driven Advocacy: We're gathering data to expose how the industry profits from the most vulnerable – the 5% of gamblers who generate 60% of their revenue. Industry Accountability: We're pushing operators to uphold their responsibility, not just pay lip service. While the Department for Culture, Media & Sport's (DCMS) white paper on gambling reform is a step in the right direction, it falls short of implementing robust measures to protect vulnerable players. The current proposals lack the teeth necessary to effectively address the root causes of gambling harm and ensure a truly safe and fair gambling environment for all. Why Now? Lobbying is strong, political ties run deep. But lives are at stake. Gambling-related suicides are a daily occurrence, with countless more suffering in silence. We can't wait for change to trickle down. Your Voice Matters: We need YOUR data, YOUR stories to amplify this fight. If you're ready to reclaim your power, join us. Together, we can create a safer, fairer gambling industry. #ProblemGamblerGuide #GamblingReform #WhitePaper Gambling with Lives GambleAware

Hot take thoughts on the Statutory Levy. 🔼 Education and awareness to front line staff is absolutely vital. I’ve always been a huge proponent of effective education which has input from all parts of the stakeholder Journey. 🔼 Funding and adequately funding anti addiction programs and research is never really a bad thing at all, however effectiveness is key and funding that effectiveness is vital. 🔼 Patient, person and people always come first. Regardless of anything, HOW is key. https://lnkd.in/eCmNn4dN

A very difficult read 📚 🎰 s.24 Gambling Act 2005 requires the Gambling Commission to issue and the Operators to implement Codes of Practice to help Problem Gamblers. If extreme cases of Problem Gambling are not being identified this is simply not working. If the Government want to help Problem Gamblers then the ambit and powers of the Gambling Commission (and its fitness for purpose) must be examined and the Operators must be challenged more robustly on the adequacy of any Interaction/Risk of Harm Algorithms they have in place to identify those at risk. Among other things a decent ADR mechanism and a Gambling Ombudsman with statutory powers to punish the Operators for breach of Social Responsibility Rules would help too.
