The UK government just announced major updates to its gambling regulations, focusing on protecting players and tackling gambling harm. 🔒 Here’s what’s new: ➡️ New statutory levy: Expected to raise £100m+ annually for addiction treatment, public health campaigns, and research. ➡️ Slot stake limits: Online slots to be capped at £5 per spin for players 25+ and £2 for those aged 18-24. These changes are designed to protect vulnerable players, especially young adults. But not everyone’s happy—critics argue this could push more people toward unregulated gambling sites. ⚠️ What do you think? Will these measures make a real difference? The UK gambling industry, a £15.1 billion giant, is booming, with online revenue growth at an alarming 7.4% and a staggering £972.5 million spent on advertising while entertaining millions. But for those trapped in addiction, it's a nightmare. Compulsive gambling is a silent crisis. Recent figures from the Gambling Commission suggest that the number of adults in Great Britain experiencing problem gambling could be as high as 2.5%, or approximately 1.3 million individuals – a far cry from the previously reported 0.3%. We're a community empowering those harmed by gambling to take back control. Our Focus: Data-Driven Advocacy: We're gathering data to expose how the industry profits from the most vulnerable – the 5% of gamblers who generate 60% of their revenue. Industry Accountability: We're pushing operators to uphold their responsibility, not just pay lip service. While the Department for Culture, Media & Sport's (DCMS) white paper on gambling reform is a step in the right direction, it falls short of implementing robust measures to protect vulnerable players. The current proposals lack the teeth necessary to effectively address the root causes of gambling harm and ensure a truly safe and fair gambling environment for all. Why Now? Lobbying is strong, political ties run deep. But lives are at stake. Gambling-related suicides are a daily occurrence, with countless more suffering in silence. We can't wait for change to trickle down. Your Voice Matters: We need YOUR data, YOUR stories to amplify this fight. If you're ready to reclaim your power, join us. Together, we can create a safer, fairer gambling industry. #ProblemGamblerGuide #GamblingReform #WhitePaper Gambling with Lives GambleAware

Fantastic report from the Grattan Institute, at the end of the day, the data is there, it has been there for a while, a failure to act in the best interest of Australians Public Health is evidence of corruption. It is time for action. There are however a few things I feel are inaccurate, the government needs to set hard loss limits or like a partial ad ban the industry will create work arounds to ensure they still have the ability to exploit people and extract large sums of money. If hard caps aren’t in place it will not arrest the process of creating addiction as some of the key components of this particular addiction is chasing loses, not knowing how the products are designed to addict and weaponising shame (blaming the individual for not being responsible in a completely stacked environment). As far as how much people are losing on these high intensity poker machines it is NOT $1200 per hour, that is the rate of you are playing $1 max bets but in NSW and ACT with a $10 max bet it is capable of taking $12000 per hour.
As the gambling ad ban debate heats up, there are calls for maximum loss limits for pokies and online betting

Preventing Avoidable Harm to Children Would parents intentionally give their child something that would harm them?. The answer we are all likely to give is "No". Why then do some parents let their children gamble on their app, or encourage them to gamble? The likely answer to this is because they don't really understand the true level of risk they are introducing their children too. Adverts say gambling is fun, just a bit of entertainment, so why not let your child join in. This however is where the failure by government and the gambling regulator comes in. Yes, there are references to "stopping gambling when the fun stops, etc". in gambling company adverts. These bodies and the industry will reference them. But, they are of little value. So was I surprised to read the recent data on the growing number of children who are suffering with gambling disorder? , NO!! For those who want to know more then have a read of this article: https://lnkd.in/etKc3Gks Sir Keir Starmer, Wes Streeting, and other government officials, stop talking about this data and TAKE ACTION. Until, gambling operators are legally held accountable for gambling harm, an "Addiction by Design", then only more children will be harmed. Prevention to improve the country's populations health and well-being is a word apparently high on the governments agenda. Well prove it. Put stricter controls and responsibilities on gambling companies. Increase prevention health warnings around the potential harm of gambling. Put these adverts on at peak TV times and reduce gambling adverts. It isn't that hard. It just requires common sense and a willingness to act. #populationhealth #gamblingharm #labourparty #primeminister #healthsecretary Kishan Patel #gamblingcommission #sirkeirstarmer #wesstreeting lesley buckland Andy Ryan #safeguarding

The recent Lancet Commission report highlights a global public health crisis fueled by the unchecked expansion of the gambling industry. Approximately 448.7 million adults worldwide are at risk from gambling, with 80 million experiencing severe gambling disorders. The rise of online casinos and sports betting is especially harmful, impacting not only financial stability but also mental health, family cohesion, and community safety. Alarmingly, children and adolescents—who are highly susceptible to online advertising and video game influences—are increasingly at risk. It’s clear that stronger regulations are urgently needed to protect vulnerable populations from these devastating impacts. https://lnkd.in/e2sDuwyN

We do have an opportunity to act quick and ensure that support is available for anyone experiencing the harm that can be caused through gambling. Holistic accountability is required and a continued raw honesty about what we are seeing and the impact being felt by people, family’s, communities and systems. I’ve worked within the sector for 18 months and the demand for support continues to increase as we come to terms with what the evidence has been telling us for a while. #HumanityFirst #MentalHealthMatters #PublicHealth https://lnkd.in/e9KvhSKK

TWTR is… a subject: gambling harm minimisation ➡️ apo.org.au/subject/64771 Australia – one of the first countries to deregulate gambling – has some of the world’s weakest regulation and, as a result, the highest gambling losses. Australians lose more than $24 billion a year gambling: per adult, that’s more than twice what the average US citizen or New Zealander loses. This new report from Grattan Institute argues that the gambling industry has repeatedly used its political clout to prevent regulation, cultivating addiction and harm in millions of Australians. The authors respond to the industry’s arguments against regulation and call for definitive measures to protect Australians by reducing exposure to gambling, introducing mandatory loss limits and improving support services. The legends at the Grattan Institute debunk gambling industry claims (that communities would suffer if pokies were removed from clubs, for example) and call for some serious (and seriously overdue) measures to protect Australians. From this report, I learnt that pokies are more common in Australian suburbs - especially disadvantaged ones - than post boxes, ATMs, or public toilets. 😓 Australians are losing more to gambling than any other country: twice what US citizens are and three times what New Zealanders. There's no question that our government has failed to protect us from gambling harm, and there are two clear reasons why: tax revenue from gambling (the 5th largest tax base) and direct pressure from the (extremely profitable) gambling industry. It feels a little obvious to say, but, um, we really shouldn't keep on leading people to addiction and suffering just because the money is good. Time for #evidencebased #reform.

Australia’s gambling losses hit $32 billion last year—💰 $1,555 per adult. But as The Lancet Public Health Commission reveals, gambling harm isn’t just an Australian problem—it’s a global crisis. 🌏 Key findings: 🎰 Online casinos and slots: gambling disorder in 15.8% of adults, 26.4% of teens. ⚽ Sports betting: 9% of adults and 16.3% of teens are affected. 🚸 Constant gambling ads put children and teens at even higher risk. These products are engineered for addiction, backed by relentless marketing and sports sponsorships. The Lancet calls for a public health approach: 🚫 limit ads, 🛡️ enforce tough regulations, and 🚭 de-normalise gambling, just like we did with smoking. The stakes are high. It’s time to put people over profits. ✋ #GamblingHarm #PublicHealth #TheLancet

What's happening in gambling compliance: UK Regulator Defends Problem Gambling Stats Feared By Industry 🎲 A Gambling Commission official has firmly defended its upcoming release of statistics from the Gambling Survey for Great Britain as “open and transparent”, and prepared to set a “new baseline” for tracking gambling-related harm over time 🎲 The release of new statistics, set for Thursday (July 25), has been criticised by gambling industry executives worried that the headline numbers will be taken out of context and used as ammunition by critics seeking tougher restrictions 🎲 Dan Waugh of Regulus Partners challenged new commission guidance published Friday July 19 that warned the survey data should not be used to “provide direct comparisons with results from prior gambling or health surveys”, “as a measure of addiction to gambling”, or “to calculate an overall rate of gambling-related harm in Great Britain” Read the full article by David Altaner: https://lnkd.in/epJPbDbb #gamblingnews #gamblingregulations #brazilgaming
