Happy Halloween! Here's a scary statistic for you: only 17% of cybersecurity professionals in the UK are women. Cybersecurity may be the fastest-growing IT role, but gender diversity has dropped since 2021. Despite a 128% increase in roles, the gender gap is still a major challenge. Attracting more women into cybersecurity is key to closing this gap. More initiatives like the NCSC’s Cyber First Girls competition could help inspire future talent. SHE@CYBER was created to address the pressing need for cybersecurity professionals and to actively engage marginalized groups, specifically women, in the industry. Yesterday was International Women in Cyber Day! Cybersecurity is still a male-dominated field, with ISC2 estimating in April 2024 that the percentage of women in the industry is roughly only 20-25%. Likewise, the report indicated that pay disparities continue to exist, particularly for women of colour working in the field. It's important that we continue to address the gaps in representation and equity within cybersecurity, especially for women of color. I've always believed that the strength of our industry lies in its diversity of thought, experience, and background. We must ensure that women in cyber not only have a seat at the table but are also being compensated fairly and given the opportunities to thrive.
