Have you ever wondered what the Warrant Clearing Event looks like? Community nonprofits, Oklahoma County judges, and attorneys from the offices of the Public Defender and District Attorney come together to help individuals clear their traffic, cost, and misdemeanor warrants in a low-pressure environment. People seeking assistance can get help without the fear of being arrested (and enjoy a yummy meal, which was provided by The Fried Taco at the last Warrant Clearing Event!) Why is this important? Warrants can create barriers to stable housing, employment, and other important resources. Many of the warrants being cleared are for low-level misdemeanors and some are more than a decade old. Some warrants are a result of missing a court date or because a person could not pay the fines and fees. These individuals are not a threat to public safety; they just need help navigating the process and getting back on track. Shoutout to Diversion Hub, LiveFree OKC, Urban League of Greater Oklahoma City, Inc. and TEEM - The Education and Employment Ministry Inc. for making these events so impactful! 💙

A community without positive resources is vulnerable to various dangers innate to that environment. If the environment is systematically unstable-everything in it will be unstable without proper resource support. This means community organizations- non profits- good hospitals- schools- police departments-after school programs etc.

"Community is more important than ever" okay bet Who are some of the well-resourced people and organizations funding this work? What are the grants and opportunities community builders should be aware of? I am seeing everyone talk a big game about community, but as a community builder, here's what the past two weeks have looked like: ⭕ Wealthy individuals who donated a LOT of money to top-down political candidates (aka the Harris-Walz campaign) who are proclaiming they have nothing left to give now for the crucial work of reweaving a civic culture ⭕ Rejections from grants/foundations who have had to pivot their giving strategies based on the change in administration ⭕ More people reaching out to me asking me to *volunteer my time* to support their communities, companies, and organizations because of the success we've had at Soapbox Project transforming climate anxiety into action "Community is more important than ever" so who is funding this work? This is a very serious question! Who are some of the foundations, grantors, and people with money (or money-related ideas) I should talk to? 🙃 Help 🙃

transparency and reciprocity (accountability) is necessary to develop trust. trust is necessary for justice; justice is how love moves in community. community is how. let's stop hoarding resources (wealth), change our structures, and take care of each other. https://lnkd.in/ejf923Xr

“Community” can be such a junk-drawer word. “We offer community” “Our company is a real community” “I’m looking for community” What are we really talking about? Most of my life and career has been devoted to building “community.” Starting businesses, churches, non-profits. I stopped to process the best groups of relationships I’ve experienced and found 4 key principles to a real comminity: 1. Real Community is rooted in sacrificial commitment - when someone gives up something without gain, that sacrifice runs deep to build real friendship. Commitment is counter-cultural today. Let your yes be yes. It speaks volumes to others. 2. Real Community is regular with shared leadership to make it regular - the difference between events and community is that events bring people together for a moment while community brings people together for moments over time. 3. Real Community is united by purpose that runs deeper than money, work, or things - that’s one of the reasons real faith communities stand the test of time. We are united by something WAY beyond ourselves. 4. Real Community is rooted in the equation of friendship over time - we give of ourselves for longer periods of time, especially when it’s hard and we gain nothing, because we care about the relationship and serving our friends.

Weave has created a Social Trust Index score, look at downtown Jax’s! According to the organization, when it comes to building social trust, three things matter: Trusting Behavior - whether people take action to support the community Trusting Intentions - whether people feel good about the community Trusting Spaces - whether people have places to connect How do they measure? Annual surveys and census data ask if people are involved in local groups and clubs, from religious to civic to social. A neighborhood’s score includes whether people volunteer or donate to local causes, attend community events, and vote in local elections. The brighter the color, the stronger the trusting behaviors in that place. Finally, a neighborhood is rated on the number of places that allow people to engage with others, from public parks and gardens to houses of faith, barbershops and salons. From coffee shops and bars to rec centers and libraries. The brighter the color, the more trusting spaces are available in that community. Access & opportunity are two very different things… A lot of the families and communities we work with are made aware of certain opportunities they may have for assistance, but they may not always have the resources or ability to access them ⛔️ And, often times, the mental overload or intimidation of trying to access certain resources can prevent them from seeking those opportunities. Fear, anxiety, feeling overwhelmed- all powerful and valid feelings when it comes to needing help or not knowing “where to start”. Our goal at Pueblos of California is to not just give our community an opportunity to receive the help or resources they need, but provide as much accessibility as possible - removing limitations, intimidations, and so on. We are here to help 🧡 simple as that. #pueblosofca #nonprofitorganization #increaseaccess #mentalhealthmatters #healthmatters #southerncalifornia #anaheim #familysupport

📽️Getting young people back into employment and work-ready was a top priority highlighted in South Yorkshire's Community Foundation 2021 Vital Signs report. That's why we're really proud of our hugely successful Moving On Up programme. With the support of SYCF's generous donors - we've been able to invest £300,000 in 24 local groups to connect more young people with employers in South Yorkshire. 🙏 #ItsAGivingThing Andy Kershaw Media BA (Hons) Law, DMS

Are you looking to give back to our community? Quite often when talking to founders I get asked "what can I do to help?" And this is such a huge question, because it's all connected. Community centres like this give opportunities to people, give them a space to connect, and a place to come together. By building communities we become a place of collaboration and support instead of competition. If you'd like to get involved, take a look at Charles Tyrer's post below.
Could you help to shape, develop and influence goings on for this incredible community asset? The Gregson Community & Arts Centre has been on an incredible journey in recent years. Amazingly we now have over 60 regular creative and community groups using our spaces and an exciting community programme of events. Having just developed a three year strategic plan, we are looking for a new Chair and Trustees to lead the charity as we enter our next chapter and folks with commercial experience to join our new Trading Arm which has over sight of our Cafe Bar. Our vision over the next three years is to transform this historic building and we are looking for people who share our mission 'for people to be in the driving seat of the community events and culture.' A recruitment pack can be found here: https://lnkd.in/eViMPyMe Interested or know some one that might be? I'd love to tell you more about what we do here.

FROM CORBETT NETWORK MEMBER CHRIS PARSONS OF LANDWORKS - A SMALL CHARITY WITH BIG RESULTS Darryl called in at our house on Saturday morning, he often does and we have a cup of tea and a chat. We have known each other for 9 years. When we first met ( on his day release from prison) the chat was about criminal exploits, long sentences, and the characters he had met during many years of doing time. That was his life. The journey to change from being criminal should not be underestimated. It is hard and takes time. Darryl now works full time for NHS Reconnect, as a peer support worker. Supporting people out of prison he often spots good referrals for LandWorks. It works well and several graduates would tell you that this combination of Darryl’s ‘lived experience’ and LandWorks support gave them hope when there was none. Darryl often refers to the importance of the little bits of becoming accepted and living in the community. Understanding a utility bill, a pay-packet advice slip, washing machines etc. The thing I notice when we catch up is that we are just talk about ‘normal stuff’ - about work, relationships, his passion for collecting Moorcroft China, which he now acquires legally (wasn’t always!) Finding your place in a community for all of us can be tricky. Having been actively criminal then re-entering a community as no longer criminal is daunting. Acceptance is a two-way process, and it takes time. With plenty of time to talk.

As we inch towards the holidays, there are over 7,000 households in Chelsea struggling to cover blistering rents and utility bills. Many are one unforeseen setback away from homelessness - an unanticipated car repair, sudden job loss, or a severe medical complication. It’s a bitter, inescapable reality for too many community members. This season, please consider contributing to La Colaborativa’s Whatever It Takes Campaign. Every act of generosity allows us to ensure local families, regardless of income or immigration status, have safe, dignified housing, fulfilling economic opportunity, and equitable, healthyt neighborhoods. https://lnkd.in/e3kXS-dZ
Support La Colaborativa's Economic Justice and Health Equity initiatives, by joining us for a masquerade gala on Friday Sept. 20th!
