Research Trip to Mondragon - Part I As a Master of Adult Education and Community Development candidate at the University of Toronto, I'm currently on a research trip in the Basque Country alongside fellow researchers from North America. Today, we had the privilege of meeting Leire Mugerza at Otalora. Leire holds dual roles as both the President of the Mondragon Corporation and Eroski's Governing Council. Our conversation centered on Mondragon's cooperative model, which offers invaluable insights for those interested in alternative social solidarity economies. Despite operating across five continents with over 80,000 employees (80% of whom are worker-owners), Mondragon remains committed to democratic decision-making and worker ownership. Notably, it maintains a 1:6 ration between the salary of the lowest paid worker-owner to the CEO even though it has been in operations since 1956. Hence, not surprisingly, Mondragon boasts one of the highest quality of life standards globally. The fusion of education, workplace learning, and social change within Mondragon profoundly inspires me. May 2023 was an exciting month because it was when the young leaders decided on a name for our new initiative. You may be asking: Why WAY? The young founders of WAY wanted to emphasise that it’s not just ‘what’ or even ‘why’ we do what we do, but that if we truly want to see lasting change then crucial thing is the WAY which we do it. To do everything in a relational way, an authentic way, a courageous way, and an innovative way. And importantly… a young person-led way! So WAY is more than a name, it’s the WAY we do what we do. In the words of the famous poets Banarama. - “It ain't what you do, it's the way that you do it - and that's what gets results”. What a week. In many ways. Perfectly harmonised elements with a twist of that (super) bitter stuff. Firstly perfectly harmonised stuff. What privilege to be part of #cohort5 at RESPOND by BMW Foundation Herbert Quandt and UnternehmerTUM. It’s been such a pleasure to get to meet other magnificent founders and start our journey together within the program. Everyone within the program are just pure gold, from organisation team to coaches to lecturers. WOW! I have actively listened, journaled, shared ideas, laughed and philosophied. And mostly, I’ve been present in the moment. Origin by Ocean was born for the same mission as Respond describes theirs: ‘Our mission is to drive the transformation of our economic system through sustainable innovation, regenerative businesses and responsible leadership. Our vision is a regenerative economy. A fair and inclusive economy within the planetary boundaries. An economy that thrives on regeneration rather than exploitation and prioritizes human wellbeing. Complicated? Ambitious? Absolutely.’ We at Origin by Ocean love the challenge of complicated and ambitious. And despite, we do it for the love for the oceans and our origins. City of Amsterdam is definitely delivering in so many ways: bike rides between the locations are definitely the best and locations/restaurants beyond creativity. I’ve been also part of B For Good Leaders summit. With all the honesty and respect for everyone, I mostly enjoyed the Wisdomkeepers meetings in the basement. There these indigenous wisdom keepers around the world shared their deeply rooted wisdom and humbleness emerging throughout the generations and Mother Earth. Way wiser discussions than never ending debate on how to measure your impact in finance…nothing has gone forward there but the old wisdom keeps rooting us back to the source. And this source is harmonised, sensitised, believing and observing. It’s honest. P.S. I have a sailing boat Tjotter from the Netherlands. Last fall, I met someone incredible. A person who reminded me (and the world) that sometimes, all it takes is one dedicated individual to make magic happen. ✨ That person was Fatmire Dema, the founder of the Wow foundation in Helsingborg. The foundation's mission? To forge connections between Swedish women and immigrants striving to find their place in Sweden's society and labor force. 💛 Today, I had the honor of speaking in front of this remarkable network. It was a room filled with absolutely brilliant women. The topic was something very close to my heart: engineering and inclusion. I shared my passion for engineering and talked about the vital importance of diversity in our field.🌟 While I'm not sure if anyone in the audience will pivot to engineering, especially those well into their adulthood, my hope is broader. I hope at least one person in this crowd now carries this message to a young girl or boy, showing them that a future in engineering is a dream within reach. That's the kind of impact I dream of making, inspired by the dedication of individuals like Fatmire. 🫶 Fatmire, thank you for having me. We are honored Inner Development Goals (IDG), Switzerland chapter, is publishing a book chapter on the World Civility Index! IDG is founded by people at Harvard University of USA, Lund University and Stockholm University of Sweden, amongst others. It was co-created in 2021 by 1000+ scientists, experts and HR & Sustainability professionals, with a community comprises practitioners, scientists, and coaches from 50 countries. The aim is to promote inner skills (or soft skills) to tackle complex societal challenges. The publisher is De Gruyter Brill of Switzerland, with editors Eleftheria Egel and Mauricio Campos Suarez. 🦾 Adaptability and Digital Transformation - What's cognition got to do with it?! 🌍✨ Yesterday, I presented as part of the DAAD Deutscher Akademischer Austauschdienst Study Program SDG PRIMe—Partnership for Resilience and Sustainable Innovation in Management at the A.U.G.E. Institut der Hochschule Niederrhein. My talk looked into how adaptability as a trait and as a state plays a critical role in navigating the challenges and opportunities of our rapidly evolving digital world. Along with the perspective of adaptability, I presented some findings of our current research within the working group of Human Factors and Cognition at Universität Duisburg-Essen. It was an absolute pleasure to engage with an audience that included guests from Hochschule Niederrhein and participants from Indonesia and India—a truly inspiring global exchange! 🌟 Reflecting on an Inspiring Summer Event with Delft Female Impact! 🌟 Yesterday, we had the pleasure of hosting our first summer event for the Delft Female Impact community, and it was truly a memorable experience! We talked about unconscious bias and stereotypes, and how to create awareness of dominant culture. To spark the conversation, we showcased a film clip from the Barbie movie, to highlight these issues in an engaging and relatable way. We also presented some highlights of the results of qualitative research we conducted amongst female students and young female alumni of TU Delft. This study delved into understanding perceptions, drivers, and barriers concerning leadership and entrepreneurship by Delft women. It also explored solutions and interventions that can help address these challenges. The insights from our research were both eye-opening and pivotal for shaping our future initiatives. It was very interesting to experience that the perception within this female alumni group about these topics was rather diverse, just like we also found in our research. Very much food for further discussion! A huge thank you to everyone who attended and contributed to making this event a success. PATTERNS OF THE FUTURE Understanding the next wave of global change (Wilenius 2019) FUTURISTS Futurists are people that study the future in order to help people understand coming changes based on visionary knowledge. This knowledge combines information about the past, present and future development trends. FUTURE THINKING Wilenius concludes by saying that seeking to understand the future requires utopist thinking, power of imagination and courage to disagree. A service business does not assume to know what the future would be for a client; rather they discover that together with the client. GLOBAL METRICS Wilenius takes a lot of interest in global matters, specifically climate change, the freedom of leadership, the power of education and culture, multilateral governance. He points out that “very few would deny that humanity has never been confronted with problems of the present magnitude and severity”. He is asking what would be the best way to evaluate wellfare progress. We have entered a new and richly networked social operating model dominated by five principles: 📌 Collaboration 📌 Openness 📌 Sharing 📌 Integrity 📌 Interdependency Wilenius suggests these principles to be at the core of the social and political transformation. ENTREPRENEURIAL FREEDOM 📌 Company vision and strategic goals. 📌 Human capital as part of a company’s future. 📌 Attitude towards work-life balance. Self-organization is recognized as the highest form of organization and self-expression is becoming more and more important for individuals leading them to new dimensions in working life. I firmly believe in the importance of youth representation, a cause I have advocated for as a member of the Young Trustees Movement, as ESCP Business School's first-ever student to serve a full mandate on the Board of Trustees of the ESCP London Campus, and more recently as a member of the #Delegation of the #ProjetJeunesses by think tank Le Cercle des économistes, where we are developing various policy recommendations that will be shared at the Rencontres Economiques d'Aix-en-Provence #REAIX2024. My passion for youth representation goes back to my high school days at Halcyon London International School, where, as part of the student #jobinterviewers panel, I would interview candidates for staff roles and share feedback with #leadership. I also sat down with #delegates of the French #MinistryofFinance and #MinistryofEducation to share my experience in a tech-forward IB school. I took my advocacy to our #ModelUnitedNations, for which I had the privilege of interviewing Brazil's former #MinisterofEducation, Cristovam Buarque. Today, I find it more important than ever to encourage #youthrepresentation as a tool for preparing #youth to be future leaders, but also one to make current leadership more #inclusive and #sustainable, which leads me to a fantastic initiative called #EuropAgora. Over two days, May 22nd to 23rd, it will bring young people from around the world to the #EuropeanParliament in #Strasbourg for a #ModelEuropeanUnion to #debate and #vote on #policy! This #conference is all the more relevant in today's political context, as it will take place only two weeks before the future of #Europe will be decided with the #EuropeanElections in June, for which only 42% of 18 to 25-year-olds participate. Being a Rookie at European Forum Alpbach: Leaning into the empowering spirit "Alpbach is What You Make of It" Have you ever been at EFA in Alpbach? I had the incredible opportunity to attend the European Forum Alpbach (EFA) for the first time. Curious and excited, I dove into the theme #MomentOfTruth”, and what struck me the most was the perfect balance of everything that makes EFA so unique. What made EFA special for me with lasting memories? 👍 Female Leadership: 51% of the speakers were female! This diversity brought rich perspectives and sparked some of the most engaging conversations. Kudos to initiator Antonella Mei-Pochtler and everyone involved! 👍 Intergenerational Dialogue: The conference felt like a massive session of REVERSE MENTORING, with global experts engaging deeply with the youth. Over 500 scholars, selected from more than 7,000 global applications, were on site, bringing fresh perspectives to the table. 👍 Inspiring Leadership: The presence of president Andreas Treichl, with his thought-provoking speeches, and the two vice-presidents Antonella Mei-Pochtler and Marie Ringler was palpable. Their optimistic spirit, along with the professionalism of the remarkable EFA team (Feri Thierry, Annamaria Toth and co), infused the conference, side meetings, and workshops with empowering energy. 👍 Networking - fantastic to connect with both new faces and familiar ones in such an open and engaging environment. From the picturesque village set against breathtaking mountain scenery to the enriching discussions with participants from around the world, EFA was truly inspiring. BUT: I’m surprised more people in my network aren’t aware of this conference.
