Great opportunity for me to participate in STEM Continental Conference Transforming Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) in Africa, held in Addis Ababa. My take away from the presenters, Discussion with African elites and the youth are: STEM is a powerful enabler and driver of progress in addressing critical challenges such as poverty, climate change, food security, healthcare access and of course, sustainable development across Africa. In Africa, given its limited industrial base and relatively young population and institutions, the demands are equally high, but so too are the opportunities.   Collaboration and partnerships are therefore essential.We have to meet the STEM needs of Africa's nearly 1.4 billion people. STEM education is not merely an academic endeavor; it is a catalytic force for sustainable development. When we invest in STEM, we fuel the engines of innovation, of entrepreneurship and of sustainable growth.   TVET need also to focus on STEM integration for fuelling the engine of innovation and entrepreneurship and sustainable growth.  My cascaded thought from what is presented!!

In my view, like everyone else's, the youth is our future. But, I, personally see the youth as a vehicle toward the future. The parents are the engine of that vehicle; teachers and mentors are the fuel; and society as a whole is the road that vehicle travels towards the future. We must live for the youth. We must sacrifice for the youth. We must lock arms around the youth, and become their security belt; their security rampart. Africa must come together to give the best to our youth. Africa must come together to transform itself now to pave the way for this generation, and generations to come to transform the constant needy status of the continent into limitless opportunities. Education must be the well where our valued youth will quench their thirst for knowledge to feed their ambitions, and STEM and SOCIAL SCIENCE must lead. We cannot thrive in the New Economy of the 21 century without unleashing our ingenuity and potential in STEM. What is the New Economy? The New Economy is a system where new and high-growth industries on the cutting-edge of technology are the driving force of economic growth and productivity. This has made technology the foundation and door of entry into the 21st century economy. Africa is far behind in the technology competition but cannot be counted out. Our smart and ambitious youth are thirsty to learn, and we must give them the best educational institutions with the resources to get them in the race.  They will do wonders. AFRICAN UNIVERSITY OF & FOR THE FUTURE: It is time African university leaders stopped talking about the Future of African Universities or the Future of African Higher Education. Instead, they should start talking about African Universities of and for the Future. The Future of African Universities or Higher Education is so yesterday. Apart from sounding so much like the British magazine The Economist’s articles on the Future of Africa. Articles that often have gloomy predictions. In this formulation nobody has to do anything now. Kick the can into the ever receding horizon. During Covid 19 talk moved on to a more promising Reimagining African Universities. Time to act on it – now - and move on. Systemic transformation driven by transformative vision is necessary. Vision that must be implemented with a sense of urgency, energy and creativity. Inspirational, qualified, experienced university leaders are needed who can identify enduring problems and emerging issues in higher education and society. And can enable future focused knowledge based solutions co-created by academics, students and stakeholders in society. The new African university must drive transformative impact for sustainable futures for Africa and the world. #thefutureisnow

On Thursday, May 9, 2024, the Secretary-General of the All-Africa Students Union, Peter Kwasi Kodjie shared valuable insights on the role of STEM education in preparing Africa's youth for the Fourth Industrial Revolution during Africa Dialogue Series 2024 webinar.   One of the key questions posed to him was how we can measure the impact and sustainability of STEM education in Africa. Here is a summary of his response: "It is essential to assess education by its outcomes, particularly at the university level, where training translates into tangible results. To measure the effectiveness of STEM education in Africa, we must evaluate the outcomes of university training in STEM fields. If this training does not lead to innovations that solve real-world problems, then we must question the purpose of our STEM education initiatives. Our investments in STEM education are intended to generate meaningful outcomes. Therefore, it is crucial to track whether these investments are yielding the desired results.” #ADS2024
