The LTO-MX PAN (A lithium titanate-decorated Ti3C2Tx MXene (LTO-MX) composite was synthesized through etching and alkali processes, and subsequently immobilized using polyacrylonitrile (PAN) polymer via a phase inversion method) beads demonstrated superior strontium adsorption capacity compared to most polymer-based adsorbents documented in prior research. The waste water generated during the operation of nuclear power plants, contains a variety of radionuclides, posing serious threats to the environment and public health. Among these radionuclides, radioactive strontium (90Sr) is a byproduct of nuclear fission originating from uranium (235U) and plutonium (239Pu). With a half-life of 28.78 years, 90Sr emits beta particles. Its presence has been reported in extremely low concentrations (from 0.002 to 0.580 μg/L). Further, strontium shares chemical properties with calcium, enabling its accumulation in the human body and potentially leading to severe bone or blood cancers. Strontium adsorption by modifying the surface functional groups of MXene (such as amino groups) or by coating it with metal oxides. These approaches have the disadvantage of involving complex modification processes and being time-consuming. Among various alkaline solutions, LiOH results in a more significant expansion of the interlayer spacing of MXene compared to NaOH or KOH and also enhancing its negative surface charge and hydrophilic properties . This phenomenon is attributed to the larger hydration radius of Li+ ions (Li+: 0.382 nm, Na+: 0.358 nm, and K+: 0.331 nm). Moreover, lithium titanate (Li4Ti5O12) formed through the reaction between oxidized MXene and Li+ ions exhibits higher affinity towards divalent cations than monovalent cations, showing greater selectivity for strontium ions through lithium ion exchanges. Polyacrylonitrile (PAN) emerges as a promising polymer material for immobilizing MXene powder due to its straightforward synthesis, chemical resistance, durability, and cost-effectiveness Moreover, PAN-based beads offer the advantage of convenient loading and separation from a continuous fixed-bed column. Compared to conventional batch systems, fixed-bed column systems can continuously purify large volumes of radioactive wastewater. MX, LTO-MX, and LTO-MX PAN beads can be physiochemically characterized using ATR-FTIR, XRD, TGA, and BET analysis.
