In this article, Andrew Jakubowicz and I reflect on the just-released report of the Federal Government's Multicultural Framework Review. We argue that the review comes after a long period where multicultural policy has been ignored, with Australia now paying the price in particular in the shape of declining social cohesion. 🙂Last week, it was good to catch up with Department of Home affairs Acting Regional Director, Andrew Heath. We discussed the Multicultural Framework Review, the Government’s response and how all tiers of government can collaborate. 🤝🏾🤝The Department’s Multicultural Framework Review report has been released and summarises the discussion as: ‘Towards Fairness: A multicultural Australia for all.’ 🇦🇺“The Multicultural Framework Review is a generational reform agenda requiring a whole-of-government and community approach that will position Australia to realise its full potential as a nation made up of many cultures, faiths and lived experiences.” 📖You can read the recommendations here: https://lnkd.in/gwtQsqqg

Yesterday, the Australian Government released the Multicultural Framework Review Report. Language defines the reality we live in. While I’ve only had a quick squiz at the contents, I am underwhelmed by the title of this report, which sets a tone for the rest. Is this title, 'TOWARDS FAIRNESS: A MULTICULTURAL AUSTRALIA FOR ALL' the best we can expect for a multicultural policy for Australia? What about: A MORE VIBRANT AUSTRALIA A MORE SOPHISTICATED AUSTRALIA In the spirit of humility, it's important to recognize that 'fairer' is not only a weak rallying call but also problematic – the root word ‘fair’ is ambiguous and for many people conjures racist legacies such as the White Australia Policy (notwithstanding its prominence in the National Anthem). Words matter. I will respond at greater length to this report once I've read it in full and will be looking for ways to be constructive in my response. For the love of humanity. So, what do you all think about the title of this Multicultural Policy? See attached our organisation’s submission to the Multicultural Framework Review here. Today, 21 May, is World Day for Cultural Diversity for Dialogue and Development. This day highlights not only the richness of the world’s cultures, but also the essential role of intercultural dialogue for achieving peace and sustainable development. With 89% of the world’s ongoing conflicts occurring in countries with low intercultural dialogue, strengthening this dialogue must be made a priority if we are to forge effective cooperation and sustain peace. #SITAlumni SPEAK - Share your world promotes the social inclusion of migrants and refugees by connecting them with locals through a language and culture exchange programme. #EIB #EIBInstitute #SDGs #GlobalGoals #SocialInnovation #SocialImpact #CulturalDiversity #Inclusion #SocialInclusion Hugo Menino Aguiar Pedro Tunes PHOTO:UNESCO/Carlos Villavicencio

Today, August 9th, we celebrate International Indigenous Peoples Day / the International Day of the World's Indigenous Peoples, and the completion of the second mission in Ecuador. The last workshop was on Cosmovision and Intercultural Dialogue. It was facilitated by the Ecuador national expert Angel Medina and delved into the diverse and rich histories and cosmovisions of Indigenous Peoples grounded in the teachings of interconnectedness through Pachamama/Mother Earth. It explored how European contact and colonization has impacted Indigenous Peoples and gender inclusivity. Nations and communities continue to uphold these sacred cosmovision teachings, which are also incorporated in the national and regional political bodies and organizations that also represent Indigenous Peoples and nationalities in Ecuador. After an open and candid dialogue around key concepts, historical and modern misunderstandings, and current and future opportunities; government officials underscored the importance of increasing intercultural dialogue to foster shared understandings, develop participatory processes for greater outcomes for their collective work. The final day concluded with personal reflections and planning the road map ahead to be undertaken by the Ministry of Government in the short, medium and long term. Participants were keen to share their learnings and disseminate the training materials to support greater understanding of the human rights of Indigenous Peoples and strengthen participatory processes. The Closing Ceremony included course certificates, gift exchanges, and remarks from representatives from the Embassy of Canada, the Ministry of Government, and the Alinea Technical Experts (Lea Nicholas-MacKenzie, Angel, and myself). This has been an incredible international initiative for strengthening technical capacity and sharing knowledge. Recognition and thank you to Ministerio de Gobierno del Ecuador, Alinea International and Global Affairs Canada | Affaires mondiales Canada Affairs Canada for this opportunity. 🥳 2023 marked 50 years since the introduction of multicultural policy in Australia. In recognition of this, FECCA undertook a comprehensive reflection on the current state of multiculturalism from the perspective of people from culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) backgrounds via an online survey, stakeholder consultations and expert interviews. 👥 The Australian Multiculturalism Survey - Findings Report has been prepared by Dr Estelle Boyle from the Monash Migration and Inclusion Centre (Monash Uni) and details the quantitative and qualitative findings, including: - 84% of respondents consider Australia to be their home, and 66% feel a sense of belonging in Australia - 70% have experienced racism or discrimination, though 75% have never reported a racist experience - 92% feel they contribute to Australian society - 63% agree that Australia is a successful multicultural country 👉🏿 Download and read the full report here: https://bit.ly/3x8D4YS #multiculturalismsurvey #multiculturalreport #fecca #monashuniversity #monashmigrationandinclusioncentre #multiculturalaustralia

With widespread conflict in the east and west, the very idea of multiculturism is in chaos. In one of the most interesting conversation I have had this year, I spoke to the Berlin-based sociologist and researcher on multiculturalism Prof. Goran Adamson on why the very idea of multiculturism is in peril, what Europe got wrong about multiculturalism, the immigration crisis, and why cities that were near-perfect till very recently, like Malmo in Sweden, have become gang-war zones. Ironically, this interview talks about Indians in the West and was recorded only hours before the conflict about Indians in America and the H1B unfolded. #america #india #multiculturalism #religion #economy #conflict #europe #us #immigration https://lnkd.in/gSm2dq97
