I've talked about my memorable experience last year in Kenya meeting farmers there, and I can't emphasize this enough: Empowering smallholder farmers to produce more food not only helps them to improve their livelihoods, but also strengthens their communities towards a better future. More than half a billion smallholder farms produce a third of the world's crops, and they need support in farming innovation, technical know-how, and credit & market access. No one can do it alone, that's why we joined the Zero Hunger Private Sector Pledge & committed $160 million to empower farmers through climate-resilient crops and building a global network to share knowledge in our Better Life Farming centers. Over the past year, we have been on a transformative mission to uplift the lives of smallholder farmers in Siaya and Kakamega counties. Our focus has been on providing inputs on credit and training farmers on proper farming methods to increase productivity. We work closely with farmers to ensure they adopt sustainable practices, maintain soil fertility, and improve soil health, which are crucial for long-term success. By guiding farmers on efficient use of inputs and ensuring they avoid both under and overspending, we aim to boost yields while keeping production costs manageable. Smallholder farmers face significant challenges, but we proudly walk this journey with them, empowering them to succeed and thrive. ✨ From 6 to 50 Farmers! ✨ What started with just 6 farmers has now grown to over 50, collectively managing 50 acres of farmland. This growth highlights the resilience of our farmers and the positive impact of sustainable farming practices. Bridging the Urban-Rural Divide – Gippsland Dairy Farm Visit Ecosse had opportunity to take a group of city kids around a dairy farm in Gippsland to learn where their milk and dairy comes from. Our journey commenced at the doorstep of a third-generation family-owned dairy where we were graciously welcomed. The children watched a demonstration of industrial milking where they saw the contrast between traditional family farming and large-scale production. It was nothing short of a full sensory experience for the kids!! As a private agriculture lender, we recognise the importance of helping to bridge the gap between the city and the country when it comes to agriculture. The funding gap into agriculture globally is vast and anything we can do to keep the next generation connected to the land can only help. Moreover, small to medium -scale farmers, in particular, often find themselves excluded from traditional lending channels due to perceived risks or stringent eligibility criteria. With support from the Mastercard Foundation, WFP is empowering farmers in drought-hit regions ☀️ like Mandera to thrive. Through training in dryland farming 🌱, water conservation, pest control, and market strategies, local farmers are growing crops like sorghum, maize, beans, and cabbage! 🧑🌾 “WFP was kind enough to supply us with food when we lost most of our items during the drought. They also gave us crucial training, which we applied to our farms and has led to us having produce that we were able to sell. We not only plant sorghum in the area, but we also have cabbages🥬, maize🌽 and beans in production, says Mohammed.” This initiative aims to produce 1,000 metric tons of sorghum, engaging more farmers and integrating sorghum into public institution supply chains and sustainable markets. It will further strengthen Kenya's agri-food systems, making them more efficient, sustainable, and inclusive particularly for youth. 💪 #FoodSecurity

In rural Uganda, many households struggle to afford healthy, nutritious food. Florence is a 22-year-old mother who relies heavily on subsistence farming to feed her children. However, climate change is fuelling droughts across Africa, resulting in poor harvests, crisis levels of food insecurity, and even famine. Regional Platform Calls for Urgent Support to Address Challenges Facing Small-Scale Farmers ILC Acting Regional Coordinator Eva Maria emphasized the significant challenges faced by small-scale farmers, calling for collective attention from all stakeholders. She highlighted the pressing issues that hinder agricultural productivity and food security, urging concerted efforts to address these concerns effectively. EAFF CEO Stephen Muchiri echoed these sentiments, expressing regret over the country's decline in agricultural production. He attributed this downturn to various factors, including soil acidity and inadequate resolution of land-related challenges. Muchiri emphasized the need for increased public investments to bolster small-scale farming systems, which he believes will not only enhance food security but also alleviate poverty across the nation. The Regional Platform (RP) 2, facilitated by the International Land Coalition Africa (ILC) and hosted by the Eastern Africa Farmers Federation (EAFF), underscored the critical role of supporting small-scale farmers in boosting agricultural output.
