Access and participation for ALL students is inclusion. Understanding HOW is critical. Thanks LOREN SWANCUTT for these insights. QUT (Queensland University of Technology) QUT_Centre for Inclusive Education Educational Leadership #diversity #students #teaching #data #learning
On 10th July, C4IE HDR scholar, LOREN SWANCUTT, presented at the World Down Syndrome Congress (WDSC) 2024, focusing on equitable access to grade-level academic curriculum as a cornerstone of inclusive education. Her presentation highlighted that when students with complex learning profiles, including those with Down Syndrome, are included in the regular curriculum alongside their peers, they achieve increased outcomes across various measures. However, curricular inclusion poses significant challenges for teachers, especially in secondary school settings. To address this, Loren explored the why, how, and what of curricular inclusion and introduced the Inclusive Academic Curriculum Framework (IACF; Swancutt, 2024). Developed and tested through doctoral research, the IACF offers classroom teachers a systematic process to facilitate access and active participation in grade-level content and instruction for all students. Two of the most challenging #exam topics for year 11 and year 12 students 👨🎓 👩🎓 are "applications of #differentiation" and "applications of #integration". Problems under these topics are *contextualised* in various scientific domains 🔬 🔭 👨🔬 . While school textbooks supply a reasonable variety of such problems, they are never enough for exam preparation. As a result, a student who can easily solve abstract calculus problems (eg find the derivative of f(x)) might find it difficult to extract the maths out of a contextualised problem (eg find the rate of change of radiation attenuation, or the limit of population growth, etc). Mathpractice.xyz is creating an arsenal of contextualised maths problems that will deepen the student's mathematical insight in different contexts, and mitigate exam anxiety when the student faces domain-specific jargon on the exam paper. We offer maths assessment content (workbooks 📕 , exams 📜 , quizzes 🔡, etc) at a competitive monthly subscription fee 💲💲💲. Our problems are all original and unique, and we create them on the basis of our own academic expertise as well as broad scientific literature. Happy teaching and learning at www.mathpractice.xyz! PS: I took that 📷 of my favourite science books which I happen to use at the very moment to create VCE exam problems. Rigorous national research, aggregated by Stanford University, shows that HIT is one of the most effective academic interventions. Studies show that, on average, tutoring increases learning by the equivalent of students attending an additional 3 to 15 months of school. Locally, students receiving HIT during SY22-23 were more likely to achieve growth goals, attend school regularly, and have a trusted adult within their school building. To learn more about the SY22-23 impact of HIT, check the link below. https://lnkd.in/g5AYSDdH
