When converting your basement into a legal apartment, safety should be a top priority. One critical feature is installing a duct smoke detector. In the event of smoke, this device automatically shuts down your furnace, preventing the spread of smoke throughout the house via your duct system—potentially saving lives. Additionally, consider sprinklers in the furnace room, as required in many building codes. These added layers of protection ensure your basement apartment not only meets safety standards but also provides peace of mind for you and your tenants. #HomeSafety #BasementRenovation #FirePrevention #SafetyFirst

From manufacturers to building occupants, everyone has a role in ensuring a fire door functions properly in a fire emergency. Knowing the signs of a problem and how to address them can be lifesaving. Routine wear and tear can reduce the effectiveness of even certified doors, so it’s crucial to verify that your fire doors are as secure as they appear. APERTURES - Are the apertures a weak spot compromising performance? FITTING - Does it fit properly stopping smoke spreading? CLOSERS - Is the closer doing its job correctly? OPERATION - Does the door shut completely? Delve deeper into each of these considerations here: https://lnkd.in/eUAQPv79 #FDSW24 #FireSafety #RecogniseItReportIt

Fire-rated doors are our protectors in the event of an emergency. The door's capability to slow down the spread of smoke gives us more time to hurry to safety. Every building should have them. Does your office building have one? Here's how you can tell: - Check for a certification label. - Look for a gap between a fire door and its frame. - Check for an intumescent strip seal — this swells in the heat and seals the gap between the fire door and frame. - Check for the self-closing mechanism. - Look at the hinges — there should be at least three. Now that you know what to check for, you can look around your surroundings to be sure that you are safe.
