Celebrating Tradition and Innovation: The 49th Festa della Patata e del Parmigiano Reggiano The small town of Montese in the Emilia-Romagna region of Italy is once again gearing up to celebrate its agricultural heritage through the Festa della Patata e del Parmigiano Reggiano, now in its 49th edition. This festival, initially scheduled for September 8 but postponed due to weather conditions, is a key event for showcasing two of the area’s most prized products: the Montese Potato and Mountain Parmigiano Reggiano. Both these products carry rich histories, steeped in tradition, and are celebrated not only for their unique flavors but also for their contribution to the region’s economy and agricultural sustainability. The Montese Potato has become a symbol of agricultural resilience in recent years. Thanks to its distinct flavor, derived from the mineral-rich soils of the region, and its ability to be preserved without chemical treatments, this crop has found increasing favor in the local market. What sets it apart from other potato varieties is its use of late and medium-late cultivars, which ensures high quality and long-lasting freshness. On this Heroes Day, we celebrate young Indonesian patriots who drive change through dedication and innovation. Among them is Liris Maduningtyas, CEO of JALA, who has redefined traditional shrimp farming by integrating technology while honoring local culture. During the GIF Innovation Day 2024, Liris shared her journey of building Jala, highlighting her commitment to uplifting the lives of shrimp farmers across Indonesia. Liris inspiration came from observing shrimp farmers that still relied on traditional methods like tasting water to assess quality. This approach was less effective, and their yields were not reaching full potential. In fact, by leveraging pond management technology, farmers could optimize their pond’s productivity. This urgency drove Liris to create Jala, an all-in-one pond management app and water quality monitoring tool, providing farmers with a practical solution to significantly improve their yields. However, introducing new technology to communities with long established practices required a thoughtful approach. Through local “guyub” gatherings, she built trust with the farmers, showing them the benefits of this innovative tool and gradually inspiring them to adopt it. That effort has enabled Jala to empower nearly 17,000 farms across six countries, bringing sustainable growth to shrimp farming and revitalizing local economies. Liris’s journey is a testament that impactful change can be achieved by combining an innovative spirit with a local, culturally rooted approach that can inspire us all. This balance between innovation and tradition serves as a valuable example for anyone striving to make a difference: true progress is achieved when we honor the past while embracing the future. Happy Indonesia Heroes Day!
