This is a woke-up call. Our latest survey, conducted in conjunction with Mortar Research, suggests that more than two-fifths of Londoners, and half of over-65s, say the city is too woke. With May’s elections getting ever closer, wokeness weighs heavily on the citizens of our nation’s capital, with more than a third specifically believing that the incumbent Mayor Sadiq Khan is too woke. While out on the streets across our capital’s boroughs, Londoners tell me they are genuinely concerned with the impact of wokeism, particularly its impact on freedom of expression. I have more than a little sympathy with that view, particularly having been summarily and unfairly deplatformed myself by YouTube last year. And it’s why protecting freedom of expression is one of my key manifesto pledges in this year’s mayoral race. Whichever side of the argument you are on, it is important to recognise that this is a very real and important topic, and one which is not simply confined to social media and the opinion columns of our media. Voters should challenge candidates to clarify their position on freedom of speech and the impact of wokeness on our society. By the time we notice a creeping curtailment of our basic civil liberties, it is too late… the censorship has already happened. The reality is this: we should all be aware of big tech and big politics taking away our hard-earned liberties in a way that inevitably increases their authority and power at the expense of the rest of us. Having real conversations with voters out in boroughs across London! “I’ll be honest, I don’t really feel politicians… I don’t do the political world… but he made me feel that he means good, he wants change, and he’s willing to be committed. And that spoke volumes to me. I keep telling politicians you’re not connected to the people… and if you’re not connected to the people, then forget it. One more time: Brian For Mayor!” Londoners want to hear an independent voice in politics. Not another out of touch ex lawyer turned career politician. They want to hear from someone with fresh ideas. Someone who believes that this city should be an incredible place to live, work and bring our children up. Someone who thinks we all deserve better. As your next Mayor, I plan on abolishing the ULEZ to help everyone across the city with the escalating cost of living. I plan on making London safe again, by putting 10,000 new officers on our streets and opening every police station that the current mayor has closed. I plan on defending our right to free speech, to peaceful protest, and for our right to live in a censorship free world. On May 2nd, vote Brian for Mayor and together, let’s transform London. #brianformayor #london #mol #mayoroflondon #election2024

"Democracy is the government of the people, by the people and for the people. " - Abraham Lincoln In a democracy, voting is a perpetual activity, essential for its functioning. It is the way to allow people to decide their collective destiny by themselves. ✅ Every ballot cast represents a voice shaping policy development and electing representatives who embody public sentiment. 🗳 Voting ensures that everyone has the same opportunity to hold a voice, regardless of background or status. ⚖ Legal voting shapes the future of democracy. This prevents authoritarianism and holds power chosen by men and women. In essence, voting is the lifeblood of democracy, ensuring a free and equitable society for generations to come. 💯 Vote for a better future, Vote for democracy! A chart that says a lot about how society is changing (American society, but I believe this applies to other Western countries as well). From the 1990s to 2012, on civil rights, Democratic and Republican supporters were equally distant from the median voter (in fact, Democrats were often closer). Then, over the past 10 years, Democratic supporters have shifted decisively to the left; Republican supporters have also moved further away from the median voter. In a more divided and polarized society, finding common ground becomes a dramatic challenge. #USPolitics #PoliticalStats

🗣️“There are two kinds of swing voters[..], those who are likely to vote and just genuinely undecided[...] Then there’s the people who might not vote. And that’s really what Trump’s contribution to our system in recent years is—he doesn't really go after traditional swing voters, [...] he is a mobilizer of people who have been disaffected.” – Rob Richie, FairVote Catch the “America’s Moment of Truth (Again)” panel from last month’s Athens Democracy Forum for insights on what Trump’s recent win could mean for immigration, women’s rights, diplomacy, electoral integrity, executive power and the future of democracy. This discussion goes beyond the election itself, examining how the mobilization of previously disengaged voters could reshape the American political landscape for years to come. The American experiment has always been about the promise of equality. But when it comes to choosing our Presidents, we are not living up to that promise. The Electoral College, with its innumerable flaws, undermines the principle that every vote should carry the same weight. It is time we confront the harsh reality of our outdated system and consider meaningful reforms. 1) I’ve been saying it since day 1: MKE’s youth are boundlessly brilliant, and possess limitless potential. Our future is secure in their hands. 2) As an old Civics teacher, this is a well-reasoned and well-constructed piece. Bravo to Owen for bravely entering the public discourse on an important topic — civic engagement in action. 3) As a policy & advocacy guy, lots of agreement on the substance re: MPS’ challenges going forward. https://lnkd.in/g8DSCpNq

HI EVERYONE, DEMOCRACY Democracy is a system of government in which state power is vested in the people or the general population of a state.[2] Under a minimalist definition of democracy, rulers are elected through competitive elections while more expansive definitions link democracy to guarantees of civil liberties and human rights in addition to competitive elections. In a direct democracy, the people have the direct authority to deliberate and decide legislation. In a representative democracy, the people choose governing officials through elections to do so. Who is considered part of "the people" and how authority is shared among or delegated by the people has changed over time and at different rates in different countries. Features of democracy oftentimes include freedom of assembly, association, personal property, freedom of religion and speech, citizenship, consent of the governed, voting rights, freedom from unwarranted governmental deprivation of the right to life and liberty, and minority rights. The notion of democracy has evolved over time considerably. Throughout history, one can find evidence of direct democracy, in which communities make decisions through popular assembly. Today, the dominant form of democracy is representative democracy, where citizens elect government officials to govern on their behalf such as in a parliamentary or presidential democracy. Most democracies apply in most cases majority rule,[5][6] but in some cases plurality rule, supermajority rule (e.g. constitution) or consensus rule (e.g. Switzerland) are applied. They serve the crucial purpose of inclusiveness and broader legitimacy on sensitive issues—counterbalancing majoritarianism—and therefore mostly take precedence on a constitutional level. In the common variant of liberal democracy, the powers of the majority are exercised within the framework of a representative democracy, but a constitution and supreme court limit the majority and protect the minority—usually through securing the enjoyment by all of certain individual rights, such as freedom of speech or freedom of association. #snsinstitutions #snsdesignthinking #designthinkers

https://lnkd.in/d4CTKPvw What took them so long? Centrism (like any other politics) does not have a prescriptive right to rule anymore than kings did in the past. A centrist shouldn't have to ape far-right (or for that matter far-left - Sánchez take note) politics. Be authentic, be clear on what you stand for and the solutions you propose; then leave it up to the voters to choose. Most voters support that approach from whatever political stripe it comes from. And yes, sometimes it means you don't win; that's life too. Unfortunately, the pernicious role of social media over the past 15 years or so makes that increasingly difficult to navigate through. Another big disconnect these past 30-40 years has been the rise to dominance of a professional political caste in western countries whose sole life experience before entering politics seems rooted in "group thought" universities and think tanks rather than in jobs akin to real voters' varied and mixed lives. That self-satisfied "group-thought" approach and what comes out of contemporary institutes of western higher learning, has created huge divides within society's social fabric, most noticeably in the US. Hardly surprising there's a backlash. One only has to look at history to see that coming.
Only connecting with voters can stop Europe’s populist tide

7moHi Brian Benedict Rose What is the metric for being woke? How is this measured and is there a standard baseline to measure against? Thanks for sharing 😉
