“Education is a human right just as much as food and shelter. It’s about the future. This is about the day after – there is always a day after.” - Nayla Zreik Fahed The latest webinar in our “Mobilizing for Gaza” series convened four Palestinian advocates dedicated to innovating in the field of education in Palestine and beyond: Riyam Kafri AbuLaban - Educational Lead at AlNayzak Organization, Nayla Zreik Fahed - Co-founder and President at Lebanese Alternative Learning, and Reem Abu Jaber - Founder & Executive Director at Nawa for Culture and Arts Association جمعية نوى للثقافة والفنون . This conversation was moderated by Suha Abdul Rahim - Country Director at Alfanar Venture Philanthropy. We encourage you to catch up with the discussion here: https://lnkd.in/eF5cF9dn Some key takeaways: 💡Palestinians have a history of persevering to find solutions and education has always been a pillar of Palestinian society. We have produced many thinkers, scientists, poets, and innovators. In times of previous intifadas, education was disrupted in Palestine. Neighborhoods would rally together to provide innovative schooling through skill-sharing and informal congregating to provide education to one another. 💡Innovation is not just about technology – it’s about providing access in creative ways. 💡 The people of Gaza are hungry for education even under genocide, which means that there is still hope even in the darkest of moments. 💡 Education and schooling provides emotional and cognitive routine – its absence compounds trauma for children in times of great loss. Education should be prioritized as a vehicle for healing and recovery when the genocide ends. We must humanize the learner and cater to their wants and needs. 💡 Education and psychosocial support must be integrated to maximize impact to help children and youth rebuild their resilience and social fabric. Education must be thought of as not just academic but a skills-based endeavor that rebuilds and heals humans. 💡 The West Bank has also had a very disruptive educational year – there has been difficulty in school access due to a rise in Israeli incursions. Education must be reimagined across all of Palestine. 💡Digital solutions like Tabshoura developed in Lebanon offers flexibility and agility to deliver education in challenging conditions. Resources: - @Tabshoura, A Digital Learning Platform - EENET - Enabling Education Network: Documenting and amplifying the voices of Gaza’s educators and learners: - Nawa for Culture and Arts Association جمعية نوى للثقافة والفنون - AlNayzak Organization - Lebanese Alternative Learning We hope you learned as much from attending this webinar as we did by organizing it. We invite you to join BuildPalestine’s interactive membership network, Under the Olive Tree, to plug into an active community of Palestinians and allies all working towards a better future for Palestine.

Lack of foundational skills development among young learners living in rural communities poses an enormous threat to the future of education in Africa, which, in the long run, also affects Africa’s future economic growth and social development! During one of AREAi’s most recent baseline assessments conducted among learners in the Karonmajiji Disabled Colonoy IDP camp, we discovered that an alarming number of children are enrolled in school but are not learning anything. They could barely identify single-digit alphabets, which is highly problematic for the future of education for these learners and others like them who are faced with this learning crisis in Africa! There is an urgent need for the government and other educational stakeholders to collaborate and work together to address this learning crisis. Scaling up innovations like AREAi’s #FastTrack is a step in the right direction to improve learning outcomes in rural and disadvantaged communities and refugee camps in Nigeria. There is enormous work to be done, and we all must get involved! Morocco's rural communities face various challenges that impede children's access to quality education. Factors such as inadequate infrastructure, limited resources and socio-economic barriers contribute to the high rate of school digestion. As a result, many children in these areas are denied the opportunity to reach their full potential, pursue higher education and improve livelihoods. Local initiatives and NGOs play a vital role in bridging the educational gap and empowering young people in these disadvantaged communities such as these services. 📚 Palestinian Education Under Attack: A Generation at Risk 💔 A new study has laid bare the devastating toll of the ongoing war in Gaza on education. The findings show that children and young people are facing a learning loss of up to 5 years, with the risk of a lost generation—traumatized, displaced, and deprived of their right to education. As Gaza's children endure immense psychological and physical trauma, urgent global action is needed to prevent an educational and humanitarian catastrophe. Education is not just a right—it is the foundation for hope, stability, and a brighter future. Yet, the report warns that education is being deprioritized in aid efforts. Now, more than ever, we must come together to restore learning, provide support for educators and students, and rebuild Gaza’s shattered education system. #EducationUnderAttack #PalestinianRights #HumanitarianCrisis #EducationForAll #GazaWar #TraumaRecovery #GlobalSolidarity #ChildrensRights #PostWarRecovery #UNRWA #SaveTheChildren #RightToEducation

Education funding is crucial for the future of Africa's children. Less than 1 in 5 African countries dedicate 20 per cent or more of their public spending to education. It's time to prioritize foundational learning and ensure every child has a chance to thrive. #DAC2024 #YearofEducation

Happy Africa Day! In Africa, the struggle for education is a stark reality with millions of children across the continent out of school and deprived of the fundamental right to learn and grow. This staggering statistic underscores the urgent need for concerted efforts to address the systemic barriers that hinder access to quality education. Yet, amidst this challenge lies a formidable resource waiting to be unleashed: the African diaspora. On this Africa Day, as we celebrate our rich heritage and shared aspirations, let us also reaffirm our commitment to harnessing the potential of the African diaspora. Together, we can build a brighter future for the children of Africa and ensure that education becomes the cornerstone of our continent's progress and prosperity. "Learning gains achieved in Malawi and Nepal were equivalent to girls having completed five additional years of formal schooling (and about half this in Ethiopia). Transition rates into formal education were also high, particularly for younger girls with 72% of all 10-14-year-olds across the case studies now in school." Our sixth study in the second phase of our independent evaluation of the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office's Girls' Education Challenge sought to evidence and understand the relative costs and benefits of targeting the most marginalised girls in the GEC. #ValueforMoney provides vital information for development programming. Our #Evaluation & #Research team in Europe has a long history of delivering this information for #UK and #European donors - resulting in better designed programmes that deliver more for those who need it most.
