🌍 Singapore and Zambia Strengthen Climate Action at COP29: A Bold Step for Global Sustainability In a significant move to accelerate climate action, Singapore and Zambia have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to collaborate on carbon credits, aligned with Article 6 of the Paris Agreement. The agreement was formalized on the sidelines of the 2024 United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP29). Under this partnership, both nations will work towards a legally binding Implementation Agreement to facilitate the international transfer of carbon credits. This will help both countries meet their climate targets, while supporting sustainable development initiatives that create a positive impact on local communities and the environment. As part of the MOU, Singapore will collaborate with Zambia on identifying and implementing carbon credit projects that are both economically viable and environmentally responsible. This move not only strengthens bilateral cooperation but also sets a precedent for how countries can work together to achieve their Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) under the Paris Agreement. #JustThoughts on #COP29 One of the most significant yet often overlooked challenges we face today is #ClimateChange. But how many of us are genuinely realising its impact on our daily lives or what even climate change is in the first place? Sometimes we blame instances on climate change and they are a result of poor planning and management and not climate change itself. The #COP29Azerbaijan is yet another global gathering where leaders discuss #ClimateAction. But it’s hard not to see the irony. Africa contributes less than 4% of global emissions yet bears the heaviest climate burden. This isn't just an environmental issue—it's a modern manifestation of historical inequities. While wealthy nations debate carbon markets and net-zero target dates, African nations are already losing 3-15% of their GDP annually to climate impacts. Are we having the wrong conversation? Global discussions on climate change have been ongoing since "the first United Nations Conference on the Human Environment, held in Stockholm, Sweden, in 1972," but there is a disconnect between the promises made at these summits and the reality on the ground. The continent including many in the global south needs immediate, practical solutions — not just more dialogue. The ‘talk and pledge’ cycle has created a vicious loop where urgent action is endlessly delayed. Each conference highlights the same concerns, yet implementation remains elusive. The #ClimateFinance narrative has become a convenient distraction. Instead of real action, we're seeing repackaged development loans being marketed as climate solutions. African nations don't need more debt—we need climate justice. #ClimateJustice means more than acknowledgement; it demands financial, technological, and structural support. Without this, we just keep recycling conversations. Here's the uncomfortable truth: Current international climate frameworks essentially ask African nations to limit their industrial development to solve a crisis they didn't create. This is neo-colonialism dressed in green. We need to demand direct technology transfers, debt cancellation, and compensation for loss and damage should be non-negotiable starting points—not "ambitious goals." In hindsight, African solutions to climate challenges are being overlooked - and sometimes taken away from wrongfully. Traditional ecological knowledge and local adaptation strategies get lip service but minimal funding. This must change. Until we address these power imbalances in global climate politics, climate conferences will remain exercises in 'green theatre' rather than opportunities for change. Participating online at the 2024 Climate Action Innovation Zone, the Sustainable Innovation Forum, the Hydrogen Forum, and the Food & Agriculture Forum. This conference has a show floor, exhibiting the latest in energy climate innovation. It's the co-conference of UNCOP, and it's covers all aspects of climate change, climate innovation and how the private sector and NGOs, are mitigating emissions. When public debt is high and rates are high, and not enough projects that mitigate emissions, and the co-benefits piece is missing, then it's it's difficult for investors. All infrastructure projects has to generate some revenue to fund jobs over time, or for the project to be sustainable, this is the infrastructure formula. They went back to finance 101 I'm one of the panel, net present value of a project and the risks involved. This is not just building bridges, or tunnels or rails, its forestry and sustainable fishery projects. Last year the Jordanian Princess was featured on a panel at the Climate Innovation zone, this year we are all focused on financing and innovation for climate change.

🌿 As #COP29 wraps up tomorrow in Azerbaijan, the urgency of addressing #climatechange and #sustainability is more apparent than ever. A key focus is the concept of a Just Transition, which aims to make the shift to a greener, sustainable world fair and inclusive for all. Different panels highlighted the need for increased ambition and action to combat the climate crisis, with a #justtransition being vital for building a resilient low-carbon economy, creating good jobs, and ensuring that no one is left behind. ❓ But how do we define just transition? Its meaning depends on who you ask. The stakeholder engagement we conducted for our "Mapping and Trend Analysis on Just Transition Initiatives" showed that the just transition is becoming more #inclusive and that #regional understandings are changing. 🔍 This focus is now moving beyond #workersrights to also be about fairness overall and including the most vulnerable in the transition. Stakeholders in all regions highlighted the importance of #workers and other #communities in a just transition. Many argued that #climate #adaptation is an essential part of a just transition, linking #socialjustice with #climateaction, which are typically addressed through different streams of policies and funding. 🗨️ Just transition is understood differently by different actors. Some interpret this broadly, and some narrowly (as you can see in the figure below), and then bring this framing into the way they implement their strategies. It was a day of passionate debate and science-based insights, emphasizing the social challenges of the climate crisis and the urgent need for equitable solutions. Here are 5 Key Takeaways from Day 1: 1. 🏠 🌏 Local Initiatives, Local Impact While COP is a global event with far-reaching implications, it faces skepticism about its effectiveness in delivering tangible impact. Local initiatives like AlterCOP are designed to make global climate discussions to a local scale, where real impact can be achieved. 2. 🤝COP: Multilateralism in Climate Conversations COP serves as a vital platform for global multilateral discussions where every country, regardless of size, can voice its concerns and contribute to the collective fight against climate change. 3.  Why is Climate Change an Existential Threat for Singapore?  30% of Singapore’s land is less than 5 meters above sea level; the nation is at high risk of coastal flooding. Small land size, vulnerabilities in infrastructure like ports & airports, compels Singapore to adopt a 'no retreat' policy, relying on substantial investment & engineering solutions to protect its coasts & urban landscape. 4. What is Climate Justice? What is a Just Transition ?  A Just Transition prioritizes inclusion, agency, accountability, empowerment and impacted communities to actively shape and benefit from change. Integrating climate action with social equality efforts is essential. Philanthropy can bridge these areas, supporting local agency, and holding institutions accountable for equitable, sustainable progress. 5. Strengthening Climate Resilience & Protection for Vulnerable Communities in the Region Strengthening climate resilience requires integrating climate science into policy making to create effective, science-informed adaptation strategies. Increased collaboration with climate scientists can improve communication about risks and enhance adaptation efforts. A multidisciplinary approach involving finance, media, education, policy as well as regional cooperation is key for effective climate communication and ensuring protection for vulnerable communities.
