16% of the world's population is differently-abled (crudely referred to as disabled), but studies are finding that AI models often have a significant disability bias. Why? A lack of disability data. A study of healthcare data sets across 188 countries found that 33.51% lacked functional difficulty questions. In other cases, data sets lack data on disabled employees or customers, creating a bias against them when used to train AI models. What opportunities are there? This is a chance to demonstrate your values and your commitment to equality. Whether you're a leader in healthcare, HR, or another field, you can help shape the development of AI and create a more inclusive world by pushing for the collection and use of disability data. This article has some good suggestions on how to do this. Including disability data will also put you in a better position to serve your local community, widening your pool of customers and accelerating the growth of your business. Zooming out. If left unchecked, this trend will see the biases of the physical world embedded into the digital one. However, if we take action now, AI could become a global force for good. In this scenario, the globe would make meaningful progress towards equality and create healthier societies. #AIForGood #Data #DisabilityData #Healthcare

Today is International Day of Persons with Disabilities. A day to celebrate the growing community of disabled people around the world. One of those communities is #neurodiversity, now 1 in 7 globally. A new research study by EY, shares how technology is changing experience for neurodiverse in the workplace. The results, while early are overwhelming. 91% saw copilot and AI as a game-changing assistive tool, and 85% believe it creates a more inclusive workplace. Kayla Patterson gave a beautiful example of how this is making a difference in her life as a neurodiverse marketeer. Grateful to her, to all those with neurodiversity and disabilities who work every day to build and use products. And the EY team, for helping us to understand how we can continue to do more to empower with #AI and #Accessibility. Happy IDPD! Onwards. The third issue of the International Disability Alliance 'AT Digest' reflects on the relevance of meaningful consultation with and participation of AT users, including organisations of persons with disabilities, to AT policy making and implementation processes. More than 2.5 billion people around the world need at least one assistive product to support their full and effective participation in their lives, out of them, 90% do not have access to assistive technology. While access to AT is limited globally, the unmet AT need is disproportionately high in Low and Middle Income Countries, where only 5–15% of people who require AT access have access to AT. Lack of human-centered AT policies is largely responsible for these huge unmet needs across the world. Integrating human-centered AT policies into the legal frameworks of the countries is a prerequisite for ensuring AT for all potential users. Embracing AI as Assistive Technology: Lessons from the Disability Community 💡 In the ever-evolving landscape of technology, AI stands out as a powerful tool with the potential to revolutionize how we live and work. However, as we integrate AI into various aspects of our lives, it's crucial to ensure that these systems truly serve our needs and empower us. The disability community has long been at the forefront of navigating and leveraging assistive technologies. Their experiences provide invaluable insights into how AI can be developed and used to enhance human capabilities while keeping people at the center. 🔹 Learning from Experience: By understanding the challenges and triumphs of the disability community, we can better design AI systems that are inclusive, intuitive, and beneficial for all. 🔹 People in the Driver’s Seat: It's essential to prioritize user control and adaptability in AI, ensuring that individuals remain in command of how these technologies are applied in their lives. 🔹 Empathy and Innovation: Combining empathy with innovation can lead to AI solutions that are not only technically advanced but also deeply human-centric. As we move forward, let's champion AI as an assistive technology that enhances our abilities, respects our autonomy, and brings out the best in humanity; put people in the driver's seat and create an AI-powered future that works for everyone! 💪✨ #AI #AssistiveTechnology #Inclusion #diversity #culture #Innovation #Empowerment #DisabilityCommunity #TechForGood #MicrosoftAdvocate https://lnkd.in/epEzTm7V
