𝐀 𝐍𝐞𝐰 𝐑𝐞𝐬𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐜𝐡 𝐒𝐭𝐮𝐝𝐲 𝐄𝐯𝐚𝐥𝐮𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐬 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐌𝐞𝐜𝐡𝐚𝐧𝐢𝐬𝐦 𝐨𝐟 𝐀𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐨𝐟 𝐅𝐑𝐀𝐌𝐄 𝐄𝐱𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐧𝐚𝐥 𝐒𝐮𝐩𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐭 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐕𝐞𝐢𝐧 𝐆𝐫𝐚𝐟𝐭𝐬 A group of investigators led by Jaroslav Chlupac from the Institute for Clinical and Experimental Medicine (IKEM) Hospital, Czech Republic, published excellent research on the mechanism of action of FRAME external support. The study compared FRAME-supported autologous internal jugular vein grafts to unsupported vein grafts in a porcine carotid artery interposition model. At a 1-month follow-up, 100% of FRAME-supported grafts were patent, compared to 43% for the controls. FRAME-supported vein grafts also showed significantly fewer areas of stenosis and higher blood flow rates at explantation compared to the controls. 𝐂𝐨𝐧𝐜𝐥𝐮𝐬𝐢𝐨𝐧: "In our porcine model, the external mesh FRAME improved the patency of vein-to-carotid artery grafts and protected them from stenosis, particularly in the mid regions. The combination of Fura-2 and ING-2 were used to measure cation permeability of ligand gated channels in this exceptional manuscript from researchers Sapienza Università di Roma. According to the authors - “Excessive calcium influx through N-methyl-D-aspartate type glutamate receptors (NMDAR) is associated with excitotoxicity and neuronal death, but the inhibition of this receptor-channel causes severe adverse effects. Thus, a selective reduction of NMDA-mediated Ca2+ entry, leaving unaltered the Na+ current, could represent a valid neuroprotective strategy.” - and they discovered a negative allosteric modulator of NMDARs that can achieve just that! This identifies SMJ-2 and SMJ-4 as potential solutions against multidrug-resistant gram-positive bacteria, with SMJ-2 proving more active. SMJ-2 uniquely inhibits respiratory metabolism, disrupts membrane potential, and targets the mevalonate pathway, blocking antioxidant synthesis and enabling pathogen destruction by phagocytic cells. On this day in science Ferid Murat was born. Murat was a American physician and pharmacologist who was a co-winner of the 1998 Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine for discovering that a gas, nitric oxide, acts as a signalling molecule in the cardiovascular system. This work, performed in the 1980's, uncovered an entirely new mechanism for how blood vessels in the body relax and widen. It led to the development of the anti-impotence drug Viagra and potential new approaches for understanding and treating other diseases. He was a co-worker with Robert F. Furchgott and Louis J. From an application to the WTUN Exchange Programme to a joint publication of a book chapter, this case study details the experiences of Dr Farshid Sefat from the University of Bradford. Dr Farshid Sefat, Associate Professor and Programme Leader in Biomedical and Electronic Engineering at the University of Bradford, reciprocated a previous visit from Dr Parichart Naruphontjirakul from King Mongkut's University of Technology Thonburi. He used funds awarded via the WTUN Exchange Programme to further their collaborative efforts. After identifying the prevalence of cardiovascular disease (CVD) as a leading cause of death in the United Kingdom and Thailand as a common link, Dr Sefat engaged with researchers at KMUTT on the theme of biomedical engineering. His exchange aimed to establish a collaborative research project which would generate alternative treatments to CVDs, such as the use of synthetic blood vessels. During the exchange, Dr Sefat also engaged with KMUTT colleagues on Bacterial Vaginosis (BV). Following this opportunity to collaborate together, he and Dr Naruphontjirakiul have published a chapter together titled ‘The progress in tissue engineering of cervix’ in Dr Sefat’s book, ‘Regenerative Medicine in the Genitourinary System’ (Farshid Sefat & Morvarid Saeinasab, Elsevier, 2024). #WeStandOnTheShouldersOfGiants Rosalyn Sussman Yalow was a medical physicist credited with the development of the #radioimmunoassay (#RIA) technique, which helps us detect minute quantities of biologically active substances in our blood. Back in the 1950s, Medical Biochemistry was getting popular but had a limitation of being able to detect substances that are relatively abundant in blood, like creatinine, glucose, etc, their unit of measurement being milligram (mg) to gram (g). There are many substances, especially hormones that exert their actions with minute quantities in blood. Yalow developed the technique of RIA while investigating insulin. Once invented, it was easy to recognize the potential of this technique as we could measure substances in picogram and nanogram, which is one million or more times smaller than milligram. Thus, we were able to measure hormones, tumor markers, vitamins, etc. which have now become very common tests.
