Have been trying to write this post for the last couple of weeks but kept getting delayed due to a hectic schedule. A very well-deserved "PASS with Minor Corrections" outcome for my exceptional PhD student Maria Waheed in her final (4 hours plus) marathon PhD viva. Many congratulations to her for this brilliant achievement. Thanks to Tobias Fischer and Tony Pipe for examining Maria's PhD thesis. Maria was co-supervised by Klaus McDonald-Maier at the University of Essex. Michael Milford was a big help for us (supervisors + Maria) throughout as he provided very constructive comments, suggestions, and feedback regarding her PhD work. Maria's thesis titled "Complementarity-based Visual Place Recognition in Changing Environments" presents SwitchHit, a probabilistic, complementarity-based switching system that dynamically selects the most suitable VPR technique based on complementarity. Unlike traditional methods that run multiple techniques simultaneously, SwitchHit intelligently switches to a better technique when necessary, distinguishing it from other setups and significantly improving VPR performance. The thesis also introduces SwitchFuse, a hybrid model that merges the strengths of switching and fusion strategies for optimal VPR performance, surpassing similar setups, including SwitchHit and existing multi-fusion systems. The findings underscore the importance of innovative, complementarity-informed approaches in developing robust and efficient VPR systems. Different chapters of this PhD thesis have already been published at top robotics venues, including IEEE Robotics and Automation Letters, IROS and ICRA. Step into Kamaldeep Dalal 's journey as an InnovaXN #PhD student. 💥 💾 "I am investigating a device structure for storing information which has been proposed by Microsoft" Kamaldeep investigates the structure and magnetic behaviour of samples that are a few nanometers thick using polarised neutron reflectrometry. 💡"Of the six samples we designed during this study, three of them show really good results" Episode #6 (and the final one!) on the experience six of the 40 PhD students who took part of this adventure, both at ILL - Institut Laue-Langevin and ESRF - The European Synchrotron. 🌟 Announcing NewFoS Seed Projects 2024! 🌟 We're excited to introduce two groundbreaking research projects awarded this year under the New Frontiers of Sound (NewFoS) Science and Technology Center's Possibility-driven Research Projects (PRP)! 1) Implementing Neuromorphic Protocol Using Phi-Bits Data. Lead PI: Xiaodong Yan (University of Arizona). This pioneering project bridges phi-bits and neuromorphic computing to develop a novel protocol for efficient machine learning and neuromorphic computing 🧠🤖. 2) Image Based Optoacoustic Tweezers for Versatile Manipulation and Dynamic Pattern of Particles. Heisenberg’s work revolutionized classical physics and introduced the "uncertainty principle," earning him a Nobel Prize. 𝗪𝗲𝗹𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗲 𝘁𝗼 𝗦𝗖𝗖𝗛! Mathias Gartner comes from the upper Mühlviertel/Upper Austria, more precisely from Bad Leonfelden, but has lived in Linz since 2012. Nice to have you with us, Mathias, tell us more about yourself.   At the JKU Linz, I first completed a Bachelor's and a Master's degree in Technical Physics, then a doctorate in Natural Sciences with a focus on "Theoretical and Computational Quantum Physics".   At SCCH, I am part of the research focus "Quantum Computing". We develop and evaluate strategies for future applications of quantum computers. My background as a quantum physicist allows me to bring new expertise and perspectives to the existing team.   Before joining SCCH, I worked as a full stack developer at MByte Software Development GmbH, then as a research assistant at the Max Planck Institute of Microstructure Physics and subsequently as head of the "Art & Science" project "The Transparency of Randomness" at the JKU Linz. This interactive installation illustrated the relevance of random numbers in current research areas such as quantum mechanics or artificial intelligence and encouraged visitors to reflect on the significance of randomness.   From the end of 2020 to March 2023, I was a university assistant at the Institute of Theoretical Physics at the JKU Linz, and from April to June 2023 I was a visiting researcher at the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya (UPC) in Spain.   I wanted a job outside of pure university basic research, where my expertise in physics, especially quantum mechanics, is in demand. I found SCCH online and was immediately enthusiastic. The opportunity to join a young quantum computing team and contribute my ideas and approaches is a great chance for me to continue working on exciting research questions.   I love nature and travelling. I am fascinated by getting to know other cultures and their approach to nature and wildlife. It was great to be involved in this collaboration with researchers from Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU), University College Dublin, UNSW and Stanford University. Check out the paper, linked below. We have developed an open-source numerical dataset which can be used by researchers working in the field of drive-by bridge monitoring. Hopefully this will act as a common data-set for benchmarking of new techniques.
