BREAKING: Governor Youngkin intends to illegally override the legislative mandate that Virginia implement the Clean Car Standards. “Governor Youngkin’s attempt to wave his hand and dismiss Virginia’s Clean Cars law is illegal, shortsighted, and bad public policy,” - Trip Pollard, Senior Attorney at SELC. 65% of Virginia’s CO2 emissions are generated by transportation, with over half of that pollution generated by passenger vehicles. These standards are critical to address the state’s greatest source of climate pollution. The adoption of the Clean Car standards is the most significant step Virgina has taken to reduce tailpipe pollution, but Governor Youngkin seeks to overstep his power and move the state backwards in its pursuit of environmental responsibility. Today, President Biden’s U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) announced final national pollution standards for passenger cars, light-duty trucks, and medium-duty vehicles for model years 2027 through 2032 and beyond. In response, CE4A Executive Director Andrew Reagan released the following statement: “I applaud these rules, which will spur more job-creating, cost-saving, and pollution-cutting electric vehicles (EVs). More EVs are good for America’s consumers and workers. It’s that simple." “The new light-duty vehicles emission standards from President Biden’s EPA will reduce energy costs, create more clean energy jobs, and keep the U.S. auto-industry as a leader worldwide." “They’ll strengthen the environment, create more clean energy jobs while driving cost savings for communities across the country. There’s a lot to celebrate here, and we are celebrating.”
