Rheinmetall's Keiler Next Generation (NG), the highly protected armoured breaching system, demonstrated its capabilities in a live demonstration. Around 100 internationally invited guests from the armed forces, procurement authorities and industry took part in the event on 14 August 2024 at the Bergen military training area. In a first section, the Keiler NG demonstrated the rapid creation of mine lanes in the field. The Pearson mine plough was used for this. The mine plough is over four metres wide and can clear mines at a speed of up to 250 metres per minute. The mine plough can be quickly replaced with a dozer blade. This means that the Keiler NG can also clear anti-tank obstacles, fill in trenches or create emplacements and prepared positions if required. The highlight was the second section, in which the rocket-supported ‘Plofadder’ detonation cord system was used. Plofadder from Rheinmetall Denel Munition can cut a breach 160 metres long and nine metres wide in mine fields and obstacles in a matter of minutes. Fired in overlapping bursts, the Keiler NG's two Plofadder systems make it possible to overcome deep enemy mine barriers. In addition to the mine plough and plofadder detonation cord system, the Keiler NG is also equipped with a magnetic signature duplicator that detonates second-generation mines well before the plough. Furthermore, its integrated lane marking system marks the created lanes for the following forces, even in limited visibility or at night. The Keiler NG, which was presented to the public for the first time at the Eurosatory 2024 trade fair in Paris, also has an integrated crane, which it uses to establish clearing readiness and to load and unload the Plofadder ammunition boxes. For self-protection, the Keiler carries the ROSY rapid obscurant system and the Remotely Controlled Weapon Station Natter 12.7. The crew of the Keiler NG consists of two soldiers. The possibility of remote-controlled deployment is already taken into account in the system’s concept, as is the fitting of an active protection system and interfacing on the digitalised battlefield. The Keiler NG is based on the chassis of the Kodiak armoured engineer vehicle and thus belongs to the Leopard 2 family. On the one hand, this contributes to the high agility of this 63 ton platform: Top speed 65 km/h, climbing capability 90 centimetres, gradeability 60 percent, trench crossing capability more than 2.50 metres. On the other hand, being part of the Leoben family has a positive effect on interoperability, logistics and training. Existing Kodiak Army engineer tanks can be converted into a configuration similar to the Keiler NG using equipment kits, while existing Kodiak verification guides accelerate the operational readiness of the Keiler NG. https://lnkd.in/eUn2YxHe #Rheinmetall #KeilerNG

RAIL GUNS: The Future of High-Velocity Projectile Technology Rail guns represent a groundbreaking advancement in projectile technology, offering immense potential in both military and scientific applications. Unlike traditional firearms that use chemical propellants, rail guns utilize electromagnetic forces to launch projectiles at incredible velocities. Technical Overview: A rail gun consists of three primary components: Power Supply: Provides the enormous electrical current needed to generate the electromagnetic force. Conductive Rails: Two parallel rails made of conductive material that form the path for the current. Armature: Conductive projectile or a conductive element that bridges the gap between the rails, completing the circuit. Operating Principle: When the power supply delivers a current through one rail, it passes through the armature and returns via the second rail. This creates a magnetic field around each rail and an interaction force known as the Lorentz force acts on the armature. The force propels the armature and the attached projectile along the rails and out of the barrel at extremely high speeds, often exceeding Mach 6. Advantages: High Velocity: Rail guns can achieve muzzle velocities greater than those of conventional guns, resulting in flatter trajectories and longer ranges. Reduced Logistics: Eliminates the need for explosive propellants, reducing logistical challenges and enhancing safety. Greater Impact Energy: The kinetic energy of a rail gun projectile can be significantly higher due to its velocity, making it highly effective against modern armor and fortifications. Challenges: Power Demand: Requires a substantial and sustained power supply, posing integration challenges, especially in mobile platforms. Rail Erosion: The immense current causes significant wear and tear on the rails, necessitating frequent maintenance or innovative materials to prolong service life. Thermal Management: The generation of heat due to resistance in the rails and armature requires efficient cooling systems to prevent damage and maintain performance. Future Prospects: Advancements in power storage and generation, along with materials science, are key to overcoming current limitations. Potential applications include: Military: Long-range artillery and missile defense systems, capable of engaging targets with unparalleled speed and precision. Space Exploration: Launching payloads into orbit more efficiently than traditional rocket-based systems. The evolution of rail gun technology heralds a new era in projectile dynamics, offering transformative capabilities that could redefine both defense strategies and space exploration paradigms. U.S. Army awards $1.6M to Wave Motion for development of Jet Gun technology - Everett, Wash.-based Wave Motion Launch Corp. has won a contract worth nearly $1.6 million from the U.S. Army to continue development of its Jet Gun technology. - Wave Motion’s Jet Gun concept involves firing a jet of supersonic gas to push a projectile to high speeds. Since there’s no physical structure or barrel surrounding the projectile, the system has the potential to be up to 100 times more compact than a rocket or conventional cannon of equivalent power. Also, the barrel-less launcher can handle projectiles in a variety of sizes — which gives the Jet Gun an advantage in logistically challenged environments where ammunition of a particular caliber isn’t available. - “Overall, Wave Motion is developing a more advanced version of the Jet Gun that creates longer jets using solid entrained particles to extend the acceleration path for projectiles to potentially hundreds of times the length of the launcher system,” he said. “We plan on prototyping a version of this ‘solid jet gun’ for a proof-of-concept for space launch applications.” - In addition to military and space applications, the technology could be used for industrial applications such as mining and drilling. The GBU-57 is a massive bunker-busting bomb, primarily deployed by B-2 Spirit stealth bombers. Its substantial size and weight grant it exceptional penetration capabilities, allowing it to burrow through up to 200 feet of reinforced concrete or soil. Crafted from a specialized high-strength steel alloy, the bomb's kinetic energy upon impact, coupled with its precision guidance system, ensures accurate delivery and deep penetration. On detonation, it creates a mini-earthquake effect, effectively neutralizing the target. These characteristics make the GBU-57 an ideal weapon for eliminating deeply buried command centers, bunkers, and other strategic targets. However, its immense size limits the number of bombs that can be carried by a single aircraft. #aitelly #bunkerbuster #GBU57
