Some positive conservation news for the Chicago-Calumet River watersheds 🌱💚🌱 NFWF and partners announced six projects selected to receive $2.1 million in grant funding to enhance habitat and greenspace throughout the Chicago-Calumet region. Projects supported by these grants will protect and conserve fish and wildlife habitat, reduce stormwater runoff, engage most-impacted communities in restoration activities, and improve access to greenspace. Surrey Wildlife Trust has launched a campaign to raise £1m to help reverse the loss of biodiversity in Surrey. https://lnkd.in/eG9aEDtA The Surrey Wildlife Trust’s fundraising drive will focus on its target of restoring 30% of UK land and sea for nature by 2030. One in six species at risk of extinction in the UK, the Save Surrey’s Nature campaign will focus on the Trust’s plans to work on its reserves and with partners across the county to restore and expand Surrey’s most diverse and threatened habitats including nationally-significant heathland and chalk grassland as well as vital woodlands and wetlands to help the wildlife that lives there. The National Fish and Wildlife Foundation's (NFWF) National Coastal Resilience Fund recently announced a $999,500 grant to Shirley Heinze Land Trust and partners of the Calumet Land Conservation Partnership for a project titled: "Building Community Resilience in the Calumet Region." The three year project will build relationships among communities, community-based organizations and municipalities to create a comprehensive and adaptive plan for improving resilience in the Calumet region. This will be achieved by developing a living document that can adapt and evolve to community needs, develop nature-based solutions and prioritize projects for future implementation that will build community resilience and enhance habitat. It's #NationalWildlifeRefugeWeek! Did you know the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service is the only federal agency dedicated solely to wildlife conservation? With the biodiversity crisis accelerating —21 species declared extinct last year and 2 million at risk—they are critical partners in building wildlife and habitat resiliency. But it’s not just about protecting wildlife; U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service is also committed to expanding equitable access to nature. Their Urban Wildlife Conservation Program is making strides in improving green space access in cities across the country. With over 560 national wildlife refuges, including 101 urban ones close to major cities, there’s still more work to do. Local communities are calling for action to protect more land from development and climate impacts.

💡Spotlight on Partnership for Species: Roan antelope Conservation Status: Least Concern 🟢 (decreasing) Roan antelope are one of the largest species of antelope. At their shoulders, they can reach heights up to 4.62 feet! There is a single bull male that lives with each herd, but it's a matriarchal social structure, with the dominant female as the leader. Unfortunately populations are decreasing due to illegal hunting and habitat loss. Without increased protection, roan antelope will become near threatened. The Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation recently partnered with the Pennsylvania Game Commission to expand Pennsylvania's elk range. Together, they acquired 1,731 acres of land, which has now been added to State Game Land 14. The new range is located five miles east of the City of St. Mary's and links to nearby public forests, creating a connected 21,500-acre conservation zone. The expanded habitat will not only benefit elk but also other wildlife like whitetail deer, black bears, and wild brook trout. https://lnkd.in/gvP2kbxD
