#CopernicusMarine 🌊 #UseCase #Coastal zones are under significant pressure and understanding their dynamics is essential for effective monitoring and management. The EUSCOMvu project has developed an operational forecasting system to predict ocean and coastal conditions in the waters of the Basque Country, supporting better management of these areas. This service helps to improve coastal ⛱️ safety and supports the implementation of EU directives. This use case has been funded by our National Collaboration Programme. Last week, as part of the European MSP Week [➡ https://lnkd.in/e8wkNQuT] we celebrated together in Marseilles the 10th anniversary of the EU Maritime Spatial Planning (MSP) Directive; a decade since it was adopted on 23 July 2014. The Conference “A Decade of European Maritime Spatial Planning” brought together the MSP community, the MSP experts from around Europe, as well as stakeholders from industry, civil society, the public sector and academia to take stock of the progress and the achievements of the Maritime Spatial Planning Directive made by the Member States across European seas, to discuss current policies, and how can we strengthen our approach to maritime spatial planning. Charlina Vitcheva Director General of the Directorate General for Maritime Affairs and Fisheries opened the anniversary of the #MSP Directive followed by a warm welcome to Marseille and the Conference by Yann Becouarn, Chef du Service des Espaces Maritime et Littoraux opened the conference. The occasion also provided an excellent opportunity to exchange information on good practises, latest updates on the MSP implementation and to be informed about the successful deliverables of projects financed under the European Maritime Fisheries and Aquaculture Fund (#EMFAF) that have been, and still are, very useful in promoting cross-border MSP and supporting national processes. Looking to the future, challenges still remain, including the integration of the green transition and the objectives of the Green Deal in MSP. But we also have opportunities to gain better awareness of what goes on in our ocean and seas, of progress and barriers to face, to make the right decisions. In that respect, MSP and the engagement of maritime community building on the progress so far are vital. The conference confirmed that a “future innovative and smart” MSP is necessary to address adaptation and mitigation to climate change, environmental protection and biodiversity restoration, to allow for the development of a sustainable, resilient and competitive blue economy in each EU sea basin, cross-border cooperation, including with non-EU countries, and the support of the Digital Twin Ocean. In conclusion, we need MSP more than ever and the experience of MSP experts to make the next 10 years better and the Ocean Pact will be a reference framework for all EU ocean policies. 👉 When you are attending the Stockholm #WorldWaterWeek2024, join the session Standing their ground: #deltas as connectors from #sourcetosea. Tuesday August 27, 9:00 CEST. Deltas are not disconnected #ecosystems; they bridge the borders between land, freshwater and the ocean. Their successful management highly depends on managing these linkages. The International Panel on Deltas and Coastal Areas (IPDC) and the S2S Platform have joined forces to launch a discussion on how the source-to-sea approach can strengthen cross-sectoral, multi-level and transboundary cooperation to unlock integrated delta management and accelerate actions towards #climateresilience and #sustainabledevelopment. The #100KTREEs Consortium in Prague at EUSPA - EU Agency for the Space Programme for the midterm review meeting in the presence of the Project Officer Chiara Solimini and the two external reviewers. We live in an era where climate change mitigation and adaptation represent a daily challenge that requires urgent measures. Day after day we realize the importance of a tool like #100KTREEs supporting #decisionmakers and #planners in designing #green in #cities and in assessing the value of #ecosystemservices that #trees offer. We return from the Prague meeting more motivated than ever and with important ideas to continue in the second part of the project and to achieve the expected results. www.100ktrees.eu EUSPA - EU Agency for the Space Programme DHI, BitaGreen, EcoTree France, GISIG Geographical Information Systems International Group, EUROSENSE, @CWare, UrbanDigital.dk, @NDConsult, @OTF, @SDA

🌊 Meet Gunnar Sander and Saskia Trubbach from The Norwegian Institute for Water Research (NIVA). In the video below, they share insights from a case study focused on the #Oslofjord. This study explores the impacts of #eutrophication and #overfishing on the fjord’s ecosystem, specifically focusing on the limitations of the Water Framework Directive (WFD) in coastal zone management. While Norway has robust ecosystem-based ocean management in the open ocean, the coastal zone is left behind because WFD excludes critical parts of the ecosystem, such as fish, seabirds, and sea mammals. 🐟 🐋 🦅 However, the recently established Oslofjord Planning Council, a cross-sectoral initiative that brings together various actors to improve the coherence of existing policies, marks a significant step forward in integrating sectors and enhancing the implementation of sustainable planning instruments. 👇 Learn more about the case study here: https://lnkd.in/eERCVqtk #oceanlaw #marinelaw #oceangovernance
