For migratory birds, conservation efforts must extend across borders, emphasizing the importance of international cooperation. That is why Congress is considering the International Conservation Act, a crucial step to help birds on their migratory journeys. This pivotal legislation will boost conservation funding for bird habitats worldwide, improving management of conserved areas, protecting biodiversity, and combating climate change. Everyone knows how vital coral reefs are to the marine ecosystem, but what do you know about kelp forests?   We welcomed George Short, marine ecologist and kelp recovery coordinator at Sussex Wildlife Trust, for some pro bono media training at the Midnight offices.   Here are a few gems we learned: - The UK has the some of the most productive seas in the world (!) - Marine habitats, including seabed mud, saltmarshes, seagrass and kelp, are powerful stores of carbon - Kelp beds are like ‘underwater forests’, creating some of the most biodiverse marine ecosystems on earth - On land, kelp is best spotted on the high tide line – look for huge, flat-bladed, leathery-looking seaweed - Kelp can also support sustainable fisheries and protect coastlines from erosion and storms. It also makes a great agricultural fertiliser! - Since 1987, 96 per cent of Sussex kelp had disappeared – but Sussex Wildlife Trust, and their partners on the Sussex Kelp Recovery Project, are working to bring them back.   Sussex Kelp Recovery Project is the UK's largest marine rewilding project, taking a scientific research approach to support the recovery of the lost kelp beds of Sussex.    Huge expanses of mussel beds and black sea bream have now returned to Sussex waters, thanks to these conservation efforts.   To find out how you can help, head to: https://lnkd.in/epc9EG5B #Sussex #MediaTraining #PublicRelations

In 2024, World Migratory Bird Day will be celebrated on two days, today 11 May (Spring) and 12 October (Fall),aligning with the cyclic nature of bird migration in different hemispheres. The conservation theme this year is Protect Insects, Protect Birds, and focuses on the importance of insects as essential food sources for migratory birds. For birds that depend primarily on insects as their main food source, the ebb and flow of insect populations can greatly affect the timing, duration, and success of their migration. In fact, the timing of migration is highly dependent on when food resources, like insects, will be abundant for birds to replenish their energy reserves at stopover locations in grasslands, forests, and wetlands, along their migratory journeys. We join the United Nations Environment Program and the United States Fish and Wildlife Services to protect and restore habitats such as woodlands, wetlands, and native meadows where insects live and breed.

🏝The Caribbean ranks in the top 3 of the world’s 36 Biodiversity Hotspots, but its also facing the highest extinction rates in modern history. 🤝Fauna & Flora in partnership with Re:wild has restored 30 Caribbean islands in the past 30 years, safeguarding over a dozen species from extinction. This monumental effort not only revitalizes biodiversity but also bolsters ecosystem resilience against climate change. 🌐Small Island Developing States (SIDS) – many of which are in the Caribbean – are now at the center of multiple crises, including climate change and species loss. Fauna & Flora and Re:wild staff are at #SIDS4 in Antigua where leaders have come together to plan for the sustainable development of these nations, many of which are critical areas for biodiversity. 🌏 Nearly 20% of Australia’s land is protected from threats like deforestation and habitat loss, helping preserve wildlife and cultural sites. Activities often include community awareness events, educational workshops, and discussions about the severe impacts of migratory barriers, such as dams, reservoirs, and pollution on fish populations. It's great to see that respect and reverence for the importance of mangroves, has grown since the days when we ripped them out and used them as dumping grounds... This month marks a significant milestone for the Greater Ukuwela Nature Reserve. We are celebrating the anniversary of the Reserve's official legal declaration as a Nature Reserve, which granted it the highest level of legal protection in South Africa. 🌿 "To visit Ukuwela today is to see, feel and breathe the tangible impact of our mission – saving and restoring habitat to save threatened species. Ukuwela, as a wildlife corridor, is working to tackle the most immediate cause of extinction on our planet: habitat loss. The proven solution to the extinction crisis is the protection and expansion of wild spaces in areas rich with biodiversity. By saving and restoring Ukuwela's grasslands, forests and fragile wetlands, we are not only giving wildlife a chance at a wild tomorrow but also using nature as a solution to mitigate climate change and provide added resiliency for people and wildlife."
