The University of Exeter is working in partnership with Cornwall Association of Tourist Attractions (CATA) to encourage the tourism industry to become more sustainable. There will be a number of workshops and additional 1-1 support. This event has now been opened up to Visit Cornwall members. The first workshop will be held at Tremough Campus on Wednesday 16th October. The agenda will include: - Intro to Net Zero/Decarbonisation/Carbon Literacy - Understand your Emissions across Scope 1, 2 and 3 - Commercial reasons for embedding sustainability across your organisation - Low/No regret actions that can be taken today to reduce your emissions Following on from this, there will be a further two workshops that will tackle industry specific challenges, and an opportunity to be one of ten businesses that the University of Exeter will be working with to deliver a tailored Carbon Footprint (Scope 1, 2 and 3) and associated Decarbonisation Plan. Two years ago, I had the incredible opportunity to study the Invisible Burden of tourism on Block Island, Rhode Island for Harvard’s T.H. Chan School of Public Health under the direction of Megan Epler Wood and O'Shannon Burns. While tourism is an important revenue stream for many destinations around the world, it can also produce significant costs that are typically not accounted for in the budgets of local governments. These costs, or the “Invisible Burden” of tourism, put pressures on environmental and socio-cultural resources like the overuse of public utilities, the degradation of natural landscapes, and a lack of affordable housing for residents. Understanding these costs is critical for effective tourism management. More information about the Invisible Burden first reported by EplerWood International can be found here: https://lnkd.in/gQY5RMi6 It is an honor to have the work we conducted in Block Island to be included in the recently announced Handbook on Managing Nature-Based Tourism Destinations Amid Climate Change alongside numerous leaders in the sustainable tourism field. Responsible management is vital for maintaining resilient destinations and to ensure that the benefits of tourism outweigh the costs. Considering tourism holistically will help safeguard these destinations for future generations to explore and expand their worldview through the discovery of travel.

📢 📍 We are thrilled to announce the participation of cambiaMO at the upcoming 𝟏𝟕𝐭𝐡 𝐍𝐄𝐂𝐓𝐀𝐑 𝐂𝐨𝐧𝐟𝐞𝐫𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞 in Brussels, Belgium, 📅July 3-5,2024. The focus of the conference is on how transport and communications research can support the different roles stakeholders take in transport planning: 𝗦𝘁𝗮𝗸𝗲𝗵𝗼𝗹𝗱𝗲𝗿 𝗶𝗻𝘃𝗼𝗹𝘃𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗶𝗻 𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗻𝘀𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁: 𝗪𝗵𝗼, 𝘄𝗵𝘆, 𝗵𝗼𝘄, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝘄𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗶𝗺𝗽𝗮𝗰𝘁 Floridea Di Ciommo will be a panelist in the keynote session on the first day of the conference. Her expertise in stakeholder engagement promises to enrich discussions on how diverse stakeholders can contribute to sustainable and inclusive mobility policies, as it is being tested in the HEurope-funded projects AMIGOS EU and InclusiveSpaces On Friday, Floridea di Cromo will present in the parallel sessions on Transport Planning and Policy Thematic Cluster. Her presentation titled “Climate Assemblies to Engage Citizens in Mobility and Transport Policies” will delve into the concept of Climate Assemblies (CAs). Highlighting the CLIMAS_EU Horizon Europe Research and Innovation project, Floridea will discuss how CAs foster informed citizen deliberation on climate and adaptation strategies, potentially transforming approaches to Sustainable Urban Mobility Plans (SUMPs). Later on the same day, María Alonso Raposo will present in the Tourism and Capacity Building thematic cluster. Her presentation, “Co-designing a Future-oriented Curriculum on Sustainability and Climate Resilience in the transport, shipping, and logistics sectors,” will focus on the collaborative efforts within the REFOCUS project. Maria will share insights on how Communities of Practice (CoPs) have been instrumental in designing educational curricula that integrate sustainability and climate resilience in transport education across European countries. Both presentations promise to contribute significantly to the discourse on stakeholder engagement, sustainability, and innovation in transport and mobility sectors. We look forward to their insights and the stimulating discussions they will inspire at the NECTAR Conference 2024.

Our panellists Catherine Logan, Robyn Cheng King, Amarnath Lal Das and Scott Reddie debunked myths, presented interesting facts, and pressed upon some important topics on sustainability in #BusinessTravel and how we can start building it in our #TravelProgrammes during #FCMCorporateTravelSummit powered by GBTA | Global Business Travel Association.

Earlier this month, I had the pleasure of taking part in two highly relevant panel discussions as part of the Green Vision Summit’s Travel and Tourism track. In both panel discussions, entitled ‘Small Islands, Big Issues’ and ‘Islands Leading the Change’ I reiterated my call for the follow up of the European Parliament’s Islands’ Report calling for an EU Islands’ Pact, as well as the introduction of islands’ mainstreaming. In an age of global boiling and climate change effects, where island communities find themselves on the frontline, the EU Institutions must work towards a just twin transition for all. This requires solutions not only to island specific issues such as accessible, affordable, and low carbon mobility, but also to Union wide challenges such as the skills shortage. Any chain is only as strong as its weakest link; let us continue to work for a truly inclusive and effective sustainable leap! With the #SBEP Mediterranean workshop 'The key towards Mediterranean regional Sustainability' at the Metropolitan Expo, Athens, Greece (#Posidonia2024) we open a series of 5 regional initiatives, whose aim is to decline the policy priorities of the local dimension of the Blue economy, having in mind the all European scope of the project. If I should summarise the aim of our event, I would say that this is a mutual meeting, dialogue and knowledge between different actors, all of them having care of the same goal: the sustainabiliy of the MED Sea.
