September Recap: A month full of innovation, collaboration, and meaningful connections across various sectors What a journey this month has been - just reflecting on a September filled with innovation, collaboration, and new connections: 🔹 AI Insights in Montréal: on short notice I jumped on a plane to accompany our delegation trip to Montréal after organising the trip for weeks. Alongside brilliant minds from academia, industry and local development agencies, we explored the forefront of AI at McGill University and Concordia University, and participated in the ALL IN Conference. We left with so many ideas for future collaborations and brought home valuable insights for the Ruhr region’s tech ecosystem. 🔹 Investor Tour 2024: This year's Investor Tour Ruhr took representatives from the real estate industry on five bus tours to 14 cities across the Ruhr. This established format we organise with DIRK LEUTBECHER and STONY Real Estate Capital GmbH & Co. KG isn't about internationalisation but exploring interesting development areas in the Ruhr regions. I supported our team on the Duisburg tour: from Mercator-Quartier to the former Galeria Department Store, and Torhaus Nord. It was truly exciting to see the potential we observed in the city center of Duisburg. 🔹 Scaling to Germany: Together with our partner DutchBasecamp, we welcomed seven Dutch startups eager to expand into the German market. From insightful presentations and 1:1 matchings to roundtable discussions, these startups connected with experts and partners from the Ruhr. It was a pleasure to witness such dynamic exchanges, and our rooftop networking event "Get in Touch with the Dutch" was the perfect touch. However, September wasn’t solely focused on external collaborations; we also prioritized internal innovation. Our cross-innovation workshop sparked fresh ideas on how we can enhance collaboration within our teams by applying cross-sector strategies. And as AI has not only been the main topic of our Montréal trip but is also an internal driver in our AI User Lab and other initiatives it was great to gain new inspiration on the first day of Essen Digitalisiert The best part of these experiences? The people. Meeting new connections, reconnecting with old colleagues, and building on relationships, whether in a conference hall, a seminar room, a bus or on a rooftop — it's always about the people. I’m really looking forward to what's next – and 🤫 I can’t wait for my upcoming vacation in October to recharge and gather new energy #metropoleruhr #wenndannhier #internationalisation #innovation #AI #collaboration #networking

Attending Slush in Helsinki is like stepping into the beating heart of innovation. The energy is high, and the air is thick with ambition and opportunity. From the moment you arrive, it’s a whirlwind of networking, matchmaking and idea-sharing. This year, the experience lived up to all expectations. The matchmaking area, with over 200 tables, was truly the event’s hub. The process was smooth and efficient, with a digital system assigning table numbers for each meeting, while the friendly staff guided me to my destinations. However, in such a fast-paced environment, the 25-minute meeting slots passed in the blink of an eye—just enough time to make an impression, but not long enough to go into a full pitch. To make the most of this, I kept my pitch clear and concise, relying heavily on visuals to get key points across quickly. Each conversation allowed me to refine my pitch, making it more focused and easier to present. As they say, practice makes perfect. One thing that really stood out this year was the interest from the oil, steel and chemical industries in CO2 conversion technology. It was encouraging to see these traditionally conservative sectors actively seeking sustainable solutions. This shift in focus shows there is real potential for innovation and positive change. Of course, the next challenge is turning these promising conversations into actual projects, but the energy in these discussions was undeniably optimistic. A personal highlight was the Dutch Pavilion, conveniently located just around the corner. Not only did it offer a great base for connecting with the Dutch delegation, but it also acted as a platform for introductions to individuals actively seeking to invest in climate tech startups. Thanks to the Pavilion’s efforts, I was able to connect with two new, exciting prospects. The sense of community and mutual support within the Dutch delegation was inspiring, and it reinforced the importance of solidarity in driving innovation forward. Looking back on these two days, I feel genuinely energized by the outcomes. Slush offers an incredible opportunity for anyone—whether you’re a founder, investor, or innovator—to connect with like-minded individuals and explore the latest trends in tech and sustainability. For entrepreneurs thinking about attending, my advice is simple: Go. Prepare your pitch, bring your enthusiasm, and fully immerse yourself in the experience. As for me, I’m already looking forward to next year. #Slush2024 #Innovation #Networking #PulsedPowerPlasma #justtransitionfund KapiteinLabs , Eindhoven University of Technology 🇪🇺 Medegefinancierd door de Europese Unie 🇪🇺 en Techport en #Kansenvoorwest Netherlands Enterprise Agency

RECAP SCEWC Barcelona 2024 🏁Long-term success and scalable Smart Cities requires good collaboration with private sector expertise, entrepreneurship and municipal utilities 🏁 With 26,000 participants and 1,100 exhibitors (+25%), including eight German federal states Smart City Expo World Congress is to me the most important platform to step out of the bubble, gain new insights and - “foresights”. I have been deeply involved in the European SCC program and Germany's €820 million MPSC initiative from the beginning. I believe the MPSC must shift from "knowledge transfer" of measures to addressing operational issues, upscaling paths, and structural post-grant integration—key themes of the European projects and my sessions and panels at the expo. 👇Key takeaways from four days SCEWC👇 🌏 Global Momentum: The strong presence of Chinese, Asian, Arab, and American players leaves no doubt that the market is evolving at a global pace—not in some European or German bubble. 🔗 Matchmaking with Entrepreneurship is key: Facilitated interfaces between cities and start-ups are crucial. Our Meet the German Cities session was a great success—but there’s still potential to scale this further. Huge thanks to my co-moderator, Enoch Tabak ⚠️ Avoiding the Smart City Piloting Trap: The results of our study on smart city upscaling remains highly relevant for both European and German projects. Diskussions with SCC coordinators underlined that we need lasting organizational structures, operating/financing models, and processes to connect everything effectively. https://lnkd.in/eb4UwT9n 🛠️ Innovation Procurement needs to be an empowerment tool: Strengthening the pre-commercial phases and market exploration will be important to get there. Thanks to my fantastic fast-track 🚀panel Nadja Riedel Alexander Lang Tomáš Vácha 🔜Our ongoing innovation procurement assessment includes top experts from EC, SCC, KOINNO... 🐘 Economic Cooperation: In the #MPSC program, collaboration with the private sector (municipal businesses) remains a significant “elephant in the room." Yet this is vital for the success of the measures and role of cities as economic hubs. 🤖 Artificial Intelligence: AI was, as expected, a big topic, but its implementation is still in an earlier learning phase. The race is on—especially if we want to see European solutions emerge. 🍷 Smart with your heart: Never miss the opportunity to connect over good food in Barcelona. Cheers, Nathan Pierce @Dos Pebrots Bernhard It was a privilege and an honor to reconnect with so many long-time friends, same minded people, and brilliant experts. Thank you all! As we grow, our dreams shift. For many, Berlin was once the ultimate city—packed with startups, creativity, and life. But now, a new dream is emerging: Leipzig. Here’s why it might be your next destination: 💼 Job Market: Berlin may have had its moment, but now it’s overcrowded with inflated startups and fierce competition. Leipzig, on the other hand, offers a growing job market with easier access for professionals looking to build their careers without getting lost in the shuffle. 🏠 Rent: Berlin’s rental market is a struggle—sky-high prices and limited options make finding a place exhausting. Leipzig? More affordable rent, and you actually have choices. It’s the ideal balance of quality living and financial freedom. 🏥 Healthcare: Sick in Berlin? You could be waiting weeks to see a doctor. In Leipzig, appointments with specialists are faster, meaning better access to healthcare when you need it. 🎨 Art Scene: Berlin is known for its chaotic street art and underground culture, but some say it’s spiraling out of control. Leipzig, on the other hand, offers a fresh perspective with modern art galleries and exhibitions that are more refined but equally vibrant. 🌍 Community: Berlin’s appeal to expats means it’s often overcrowded and rundown, losing some of its local charm. Leipzig? A younger, more diverse crowd that's still deeply rooted in local culture. It's a place where community feels more genuine and connected. 👋 Welcome to Finland (in November!!!!) ❄️ Whether you're a first-timer or a regular, you're very welcome in Helsinki in mid-November (oh dear! 😅). If you hadn't realised, it's a "Finnish" joke to bring visitors to the country when it's the darkest, wettest and grimmest. ☔️ On a bright note, Slush is an amazing "investor meets founder" experience and is run like a start-up by a young, high-talent-density team with complete stars like Elin Dölker and Matthews Joy, to name just two. ✨ Slush is also powered by a tonne of volunteers (who are often university or school-aged), so please say thank you to them. 🙏 It's a big part of Finland's tech scene and has achieved so much since 2008. 📈 Outside Slush, I would always encourage people to take a minute to "stand and stare" at the rest of Helsinki. 🏙️ It's a great coastal city, so try and see the sea at some point. 🌊 Also, attend some of the numerous side events; there is great value in those smaller, more nuanced conversations. 🗣️ Here are a few favourite Finn facts/conversation points to help you out: 1) Helsinki has bunker capacity for over 900K people, so don't worry, you are safe here! As even in Slush week we don't have that many people! 2) Helsinki Airport is award-winning and my favourite airport on the planet! ✈️ I'm sorry you are just catching it on a super busy set of days, so please be patient. 🙏 3) Finland (allegedly) has more saunas than cars! 4) If you spot young people in colourful "overalls", they are students, and the patches tell the story of their parties, etc... it's very practical and a big thing! 🎉 5) Look for VTT inside. I didn't even know what VTT was before I moved to Finland, but once you do (think National Lab mixed with University Research centre etc...), then you start seeing their signs everywhere. 🔬 This is part of Finland's secret sauce. How it can develop world-class deep tech, phenomenal entrepreneurs who just need a little bit of capital to GTM (hint...). 🚀 6) Last but not least, Finland has a very small social graph (basically, everyone knows everyone), so use this to your advantage. 🤝 If you are super clear on "what sort of company/investor" you want to meet, just ask! Within a few conversations, you will find yourself being introduced to them or... they don't exist! 😜 So, to any visitor in Helsinki this week, you are very, very welcome! 😊 We really appreciate the time, energy and trouble you have gone to to get here and hope you have a fantastic experience. 🌟 We also hope you will come back when the day length is 20 hours plus and enjoy a traditional long drink at a summer cottage! ☀️ And if no Finn offers you that opportunity, then let me know; you can come to mine! 😉
