Day 4/4. The Summit is coming to a conclusion today September 23, 2024, with a focus on Multilateral Solutions for a Better Tomorrow. The summit is a once-in-a-generation opportunity to enhance cooperation on critical challenges and address gaps in global governance. Two interactive dialogues took place just as we did yesterday. 1. Towards a Common Digital Future aimed to strengthen inclusive innovation and cooperation to bridge the digital divides. This session highlights the importance of collaboration to ensure no one is left behind, especially in developing countries. The second dialogue, The Future Starts Now: Enhancing the Global System for Current and Future Generations, focused on enhancing the global system to benefit both current and future generations. This session likely built upon the outcomes of the previous day's discussions, including the adoption of the Pact for the Future, which includes a Global Digital Compact and a Declaration on Future Generations. Throughout the Summit, world leaders emphasized the need for effective global cooperation, recognition of the immense benefits of digital technologies, and the importance of mitigating risks associated with them. The event is concluding with the adoption of the Pact for the Future, which happened yesterday, September 22, 2024 marking a significant step towards a more prosperous, equitable, and sustainable future for all. See below a few pictorial and video scenes of our officials captured in the wee hours of today.

On September 9th, 𝗣𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗶𝗱𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗗𝗿𝗮𝗴𝗵𝗶 presented the Report on 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗙𝘂𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝗘𝘂𝗿𝗼𝗽𝗲𝗮𝗻 𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗲𝘁𝗶𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗻𝗲𝘀𝘀, detailing the challenges and the practical proposals for the European Union to overcome them. (𝘮𝘪𝘯𝘶𝘵𝘦𝘴 4:30-26:20) In his crisp and charismatic speech, Mr. Draghi presented the 𝘁𝗵𝗿𝗲𝗲 𝗸𝗲𝘆 𝗽𝗶𝗹𝗹𝗮𝗿𝘀 on which the strategy for a resilient Union should rest: 𝗶𝗻𝗻𝗼𝘃𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻, 𝗱𝗲𝗰𝗮𝗿𝗯𝗼𝗻𝗶𝘇𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 and 𝘀𝗲𝗰𝘂𝗿𝗶𝘁𝘆. As a 𝘀𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗳𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 working for a technology consultancy, I pride myself to work at the intersection of the first two, 𝗱𝗶𝗴𝗶𝘁𝗮𝗹 𝗶𝗻𝗻𝗼𝘃𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 and 𝗱𝗲𝗰𝗮𝗿𝗯𝗼𝗻𝗶𝘇𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗴𝘆 (to which I may add the 𝗰𝗶𝗿𝗰𝘂𝗹𝗮𝗿 𝗲𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗼𝗺𝘆 pillar mentioned by 𝗣𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗶𝗱𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝘃𝗼𝗻 𝗱𝗲𝗿 𝗟𝗲𝘆𝗲𝗻 in the Q&A). I wanted to share the key elements that struck me the most: 1. 𝗗𝗲𝗰𝗮𝗿𝗯𝗼𝗻𝗶𝘇𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 must and can be a 𝘀𝗼𝘂𝗿𝗰𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝗴𝗿𝗼𝘄𝘁𝗵. However, if 𝗽𝗼𝗹𝗶𝗰𝗶𝗲𝘀 are 𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝗮𝗹𝗶𝗴𝗻𝗲𝗱 to climate goals, there exist the risk that decarbonization may 𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗿 𝗶𝗻𝗱𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗶𝗮𝗹 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗲𝘁𝗶𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗻𝗲𝘀𝘀. 2. 𝗘𝗻𝗲𝗿𝗴𝘆 𝗺𝗮𝗿𝗸𝗲𝘁𝘀 are still designed upon an 𝗼𝗯𝘀𝗼𝗹𝗲𝘁𝗲 𝗺𝗼𝗱𝗲𝗹 centered on 𝗳𝗼𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗹 𝗳𝘂𝗲𝗹𝘀 and 𝗻𝗮𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗮𝗹 𝗴𝗮𝘀, even though it is clearly no longer the case (𝘦.𝘨. 𝘯𝘢𝘵𝘶𝘳𝘢𝘭 𝘨𝘢𝘴 𝘤𝘰𝘯𝘴𝘵𝘪𝘵𝘶𝘵𝘦 20% 𝘰𝘧 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘦𝘯𝘦𝘳𝘨𝘺 𝘮𝘪𝘹, 𝘣𝘶𝘵 𝘴𝘵𝘪𝘭𝘭 𝘴𝘦𝘵𝘴 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘦𝘯𝘦𝘳𝘨𝘺 𝘱𝘳𝘪𝘤𝘦𝘴 60% 𝘰𝘧 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘵𝘪𝘮𝘦𝘴). We must overcome the 𝗯𝗮𝗿𝗿𝗶𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝘁𝗼 𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗴𝗲 - vested interests, financial rents and tax revenues for national budgets - to be able to 𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗻𝘀𝗳𝗲𝗿 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗯𝗲𝗻𝗲𝗳𝗶𝘁𝘀 of lower-cost 𝗿𝗲𝗻𝗲𝘄𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝗲𝗻𝗲𝗿𝗴𝗶𝗲𝘀 to consumers (households and industries). 3. Besides mandatory regulation, the EU ought to 𝗰𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘁𝗲 strong 𝗽𝗼𝘀𝗶𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗶𝗻𝗰𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲𝘀 to drive the development and 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗱𝘂𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗮𝘁 𝘀𝗰𝗮𝗹𝗲 of 𝗰𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗻 𝘁𝗲𝗰𝗵𝗻𝗼𝗹𝗼𝗴𝗶𝗲𝘀 to support the sustainability transition. Of course, we must work on these major challenges 𝘁𝗼𝗴𝗲𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿, so as 𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝘁𝗼 '𝙥𝙪𝙣𝙘𝙝 𝙪𝙣𝙙𝙚𝙧 𝙤𝙪𝙧 𝙥𝙤𝙬𝙚𝙧'. The 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗲𝘁𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲 and 𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗱𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗽 of people such as Mario Draghi drive the hopes that my everyday job is punching in the right direction! Thanks a lot EURADA - European Association of Development Agencies for sharing this document
In the Political Guidelines for the next European Commission 2024-2029, Ursul von der Leyen outlines a new plan for Europe's sustainable prosperity and competitiveness. There are indeed several structural limits our economies are facing, in a context where it is becoming increasingly urgent to achieve climate neutrality. European companies are operating in a turbulent world and often face unfair competition, higher energy prices, skills and specialised labour shortages and difficulties in accessing the capital needed to grow. Moreover, the risk of developing or perpetuating foreign dependence in certain strategic sectors, such as medical, energy and essential raw materials, has become increasingly evident. The cornerstones of the new European Prosperity Plan are: - facilitate European businesses and strengthen our single market; - building a Clean Industrial Deal to lower energy prices, reduce carbon - emissions by 90% by 2040 and create a more circular and resilient economy; - put research and innovation at the heart of our economy; - increase productivity with the deployment of digital technologies; - invest heavily in our sustainable competitiveness; - addressing the skills and labour gap.
