The automotive logistics sector is working to alleviate the shortage of transport capacity that has impacted vehicle delivery since the pandemic. At the Automotive Logistics and Supply Chain Global conference, experts from Nissan Motor Corporation, GLOVIS America, Inc., and others highlighted the importance of strategic investment and collaboration. Key initiatives include Glovis' investment in new vessels, D-Troy Logistics LLC's agile transport solutions, and multimodal approaches involving rail and shipping to ease congestion. With the rise of electric vehicles (EVs), challenges like heavier transport loads and driver shortages are further exacerbating capacity issues. Collaboration between vehicle manufacturers and logistics partners, along with long-term contracts, is critical to maintaining the flow of vehicles. The role of technology, such as RailPulse and vehicle data streaming, is also becoming pivotal in enhancing operational visibility and efficiency, supporting the evolving logistics demands. FedEx Express is leading the way in sustainable logistics with the pilot introduction of the Mercedes-Benz Truck eActros 300 Electric Tractor in Eindhoven, Netherlands. The tractor unit is being used in place of a combustion engine tractor and trailer combination, to fulfil domestic linehaul operations from Eindhoven station in the Netherlands. For the pilot period the tractor will be paired with an existing FedEx-owned trailer, transporting shipments collected from larger customers on to FedEx hubs elsewhere in the Netherlands. The tractor will recharge onsite at the Eindhoven station during down time, using a 40kW temporary charging solution. As consumers demand more eco-friendly operations, companies are taking note and prioritizing sustainability in their supply chains. Putting #zero-#emission trucks on the road for long-haul freight traffic means challenging the rules that have guided logistics development up to now. Not only new rules on vehicle weight and size to accommodate an average of 4 extra tons and 0.9 meters length, but also a complete rethink of the logistics model. The costs for vehicles, energy, and operational difficulties still keep us far from competing with business as usual. The word I’ve heard most in these two days in Gothenburg for the annual ZEFES partner meeting is: 'chicken and egg,' meaning no market volume, no investments. However, at GRUBER Logistics we believe in this and work every day to make these solutions competitive, but it is a task that must be carried out in #partnership with customers, #truck manufacturers, and #energy providers. Is it enough to believe in it? No, of course not. We also need a regulatory framework that allows electric vehicles to become more competitive at the expense of traditional ones. "The logistics industry is currently facing challenges from multiple sides: on the one hand, the demand for logistics is steadily increasing due to e-commerce and globalization, but on the other hand, there is a lack of skilled workers in the form of truck drivers who can handle this demand. In Europe alone, over 380,000 truck driver job postings were unfilled in 2021. This significant shortage is exacerbated by increasing labor expenses, which aggravate the cost pressure already caused by rising fuel prices. Moreover, the climate crisis calls for sustainable processes that can be carried out in a carbon-neutral and resource-conserving manner. Two technological leaps can help to address those challenges. The first—the electrification of trucks, driven by lower Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) and sustainability demands—is already taking place. The subsequent leap—autonomous trucking—is expected to take off in the second half of this decade and is key to solving the massive driver shortage, increasing safety, and enabling further operational savings.
