💡 Let’s talk about the value of experience—and fresh perspectives. I just read a great article on https://lnkd.in/e3XVxGRv about the success of recruiting workers over 50, and it got me thinking about the unique value they bring to hospitality. In a fast-paced, ever-changing industry like ours, we need more than just skills—we need adaptability, fresh ideas, and resilience. Workers over 50 deliver this in abundance, especially those stepping away from one industry into hospitality. They bring transferable skills and new ways of thinking that can drive innovation through a change in perspective. Here are my 5 key takeaways from the article: 1️⃣ Real-world experience. Years of hands-on knowledge are invaluable, especially in customer-focused roles. 2️⃣ Loyalty and commitment. Older workers often stick around longer, reducing turnover and bringing stability. 3️⃣ New perspectives. People transitioning into hospitality from other industries offer innovative ideas, reshaping how we work and serve customers. 4️⃣ Mentorship skills. They’re natural mentors who strengthen teams by sharing their knowledge. 5️⃣ Adaptability. Whether learning new technology or embracing fresh challenges, they show incredible resilience and a growth mindset. The benefits speak for themselves: ➡️ For businesses: Diverse teams, fresh innovation, and lower turnover. ➡️ For employees: A workplace that values experience, encourages learning, and supports growth. We can’t overlook the talent and creativity this group offers. Their mix of experience and fresh thinking is exactly what the hospitality industry needs to keep evolving. Have you worked with someone who’s brought fresh energy from another industry? Let’s talk about it below! #HospitalityRecruitment #Innovation #Experience #Abundance

I just wrapped up an insightful conversation with Josiah over at Hospitality Daily the other week. We dove deep into the challenges and opportunities in the hospitality hiring landscape, backed by data from two powerful studies: - Hireology 2024 Hospitality Applicant Survey - Hireology-AHLA Food & Beverage Hiring Report These reports are packed with strategies designed to turn recruitment into a serious competitive advantage. We dissected the numbers and talked through the actionable steps hotel operators can take to thrive in this complex labor market. Based on the October BLS job report, leisure and hospitality was one of the sectors that saw a dip in job openings. So what does that mean? It's more important than ever that hotels are leading with confidence during the hiring process. To all the hotel managers out there, it's about more than filling roles—it's meeting candidate expectations head-on. Check out the episode and let's chat about how these insights can elevate your hiring game! ---> https://hubs.ly/Q02Z5M900

"Crafting Excellence: Nurturing Talent and Fostering Growth in the Hospitality Industry" Staffing is a critical aspect of ensuring the success of any team in the hospitality industry. As Food and Beverage specialist, I place a high value on creating a team that is not only skilled but also passionate about delivering exceptional experiences to our guests. When it comes to staffing, nepotism is a topic that requires careful consideration. While it can be tempting to hire friends or family members, it's important to prioritize merit and qualifications above all else. Hiring based on relationships rather than qualifications can lead to resentment among team members and may ultimately impact the quality of service we provide. At our property, we strive to create a culture of fairness and transparency in our hiring practices. We believe that by hiring the best candidates for the job, regardless of their personal connections, we can ensure that our team is comprised of individuals who are dedicated to upholding our standards of excellence. One way we nurture talent within our team is through mentorship programs. These programs pair seasoned professionals with aspiring talents, providing guidance and support to help them grow in their careers. By investing in our team members and providing them with opportunities for growth and development, we not only benefit our employees but also enhance the overall guest experience. In conclusion, staffing is a critical aspect of ensuring the success of our team in delivering exceptional hospitality experiences. By prioritizing merit and qualifications in our hiring practices and investing in the growth and development of our team members, we can continue to uphold the high standards of excellence that define our brand. #HospitalityExcellence #TeamDevelopment #MeritBasedHiring #NurturingTalent

The hospitality industry is making several adjustments to address the lack of qualified staff and the disparity in pay rates: Increasing Wages: Many hotels and restaurants have significantly raised wages to attract and retain employees. According to a survey by the American Hotel & Lodging Association (AHLA), 86% of respondents have increased wages over the past six months. Offering Greater Flexibility: To accommodate employees' needs, 52% of surveyed hotels have introduced more flexible working hours. This includes options for part-time work, flexible schedules, and remote work where possible. Expanding Benefits: About 33% of hotels have expanded their benefits packages, including health insurance, retirement plans, and paid time off. These benefits are designed to make positions more attractive and competitive. Innovative Recruitment Strategies: Hotels are using creative recruitment strategies, such as partnering with local schools and colleges, offering internships, and providing career advancement opportunities to attract younger talent. Investing in Technology: To reduce the burden on staff, many establishments are investing in technology solutions like automated check-ins, self-service kiosks, and digital ordering systems. Despite these efforts, many hotels and restaurants still struggle to fill open positions, indicating that the industry needs to continue innovating to address these challenges effectively. While these measures have helped retain some qualified FOH and BOH staff, the increases have somewhat reduced the gap, if not completely reversed it, in terms of pay and benefits between staff and management. Unfortunately, management did not see much of an increase in pay and benefits.

Why the Hospitality Industry is one of the best places to make your career... The picture looks old - it is. 38 years to be exact, where I was receiving my 10-year employment pin (a tradition back then) - making today my 48th year in what was once referred to as the "food service industry". It is now more appropriately known as "the hospitality industry". And what an place it is. I am confronted with people all the time that barely know this industry exists. Last week, we met this wonderful, enthusiastic waiter, Barron. Each dish he described, made you want to order it. His smile was contagious. He was upbeat and fun and looking for the next step into building a career. He mentioned real estate. I suggested the hospitality industry - as he was already dipping his toe into it and it was an ocean of possibilities. Like many, he had no idea how big or diverse it was. The Cambridge dictionary describes hospitality as: the act of being friendly and welcoming to guests and visitors. Society for Hospitality and Foodservice (SHFM) Foundation realized this years ago when they changed their name from SFM (society of food management) to what it is today, because they realized the success of food management is anchored in being friendly and welcoming. Here's what I've learned about the hospitality industry: *It's filled with incredible people *Many of those people are willing to mentor others *It is one of the few industries that has multiple levels to work in - if someone is comfortable in a middle management position and doesn't aspire to climb the corporate ladder - there's lots of opportunities. *It's not just food - the world of hospitality needs designers, accountants, social media people, sales people, managers, and the list goes on into almost every facet of job descriptions. *There's a ladder to climb if you want to. If you are motivated, hard working, and focused, you can aspire to nearly any position in our industry. *It's a great place to find friends (and in my case, meet a husband :) *It is mostly recession proof - as people want to share food in both the best of times and the worst. *And - according to U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics data. In December 2023, employment levels in the hospitality industry reached 16.8 million jobs - meaning there's a job for you. In 1976, at 17 years old, I walked into my first day as a switchboard operator for a company that sold refrigerators. At least that's what I thought. What actually happened, I had stepped out of a fallen house and into the land of Oz. Only this Oz happened to be the hospitality industry. Through these years, I have made incredible friends. I have been given the opportunity to learn and teach. Each one of my successes was due to someone in this industry guiding me along. In return, I guide others. It is an industry that demands much but gives back more - It's an industry that will change one's life. It did mine.

Hospitality Is not Just a Job, It is a Launchpad. Here's How to Take Off. Whether you are new to hospitality, feeling stuck in your current role, or even a manager looking to support your team's growth – this article is for you. It can be frustrating when you are passionate about hospitality but are not sure how to chart a clear path forward. Let us change that. Hospitality is not like other industries. The skills you develop here translate across roles in ways that might surprise you. I have seen housekeepers become exceptional concierges, line cooks transition to menu design, and countless other success stories in this dynamic industry. Whether your dream is managing a luxury resort, designing innovative restaurant concepts, or something entirely unexpected, this industry can take you there. The possibilities are truly there! Section 1: Entry-Level Employees Subheading: Building a Strong Foundation Every guest interaction shapes your communication, problem-solving, and teamwork skills. These are valuable in ANY hospitality role, and beyond. Positions that might seem entry-level can lead to surprising places. Front desk agents might excel in Guest Relations, and I have even seen housekeepers with a knack for guest interaction become fantastic concierges. Seek out a more experienced colleague whose work you admire. Do not be afraid to ask questions and express your interest in growth. Section 2: Mid-Career Workers Subheading: Breaking Out of a Rut What are you truly good at AND enjoy within your current role? Focus on building those strengths further. Do not wait for your review to discuss your future. Ask your manager, 'What skills do I need for [Desired Role]?' A shift from restaurant service to event coordination might not seem obvious, but both require attention to detail and guest interaction. Sometimes, the path upwards is actually sideways. Learning the operational side of events after excelling in guest-facing roles can make you a well-rounded candidate for management. Section 3: Managers Subheading: Nurturing Your Team's Potential Feedback should not just be about today's tasks. Ask open-ended questions like, 'Where do you see yourself within hospitality long-term?' That employee who always defuses tense guest situations might have a knack for leadership, even if they are not vocal about it. Think beyond traditional training. Could your budget cover someone attending an industry conference, even for a day? The inspiration and connections gained can be career-changing. Simple initiatives like a day shadowing, or even facilitating brief 'job swaps' between departments can spark unexpected potential. These have led to amazing transitions within our own team!
