Since yesterday, some voice messages have been circulating among Syrians about the top officials of the regime and how they allegedly fled Syria, saving themselves and their families from accountability. The source of these messages is unidentified, and I would classify them as rumors and unverified information. A time will come when scenarios like these will be based on facts and clearly presented to all Syrians. For now, rebuilding trust, the economy, and security in the country are the crucial steps. We have also heard that the new interim authorities in Syria will soon publish "a first list of the names of the most senior people involved in torturing the Syrian people." Additionally, there are calls to show tolerance toward those whose hands are not stained with the blood of the Syrian people and to grant amnesty to those who were in compulsory military service. However, I came across a claim that some senior officials from the previous regime, including Maher Al-Assad (the brutal brother of Bashar Al-Assad), provided information to the Israeli occupation before fleeing as part of their ongoing relationship. Whether this happened exactly as described or not, many of us understood the regime's duplicity long ago. The way this regime handled the Palestinian issue, its treatment of Palestinians in Syria, the constant Israeli bombardment of Syrian territory without retaliation, and Bashar's reported offer to sell out his allies to the U.S. in exchange for retaining power are all small but telling signs of their collaboration. I sincerely believe that putting an end to Israel’s violations starts with overthrowing this regime. Syrians have already taken a significant step; they have freed their country and saved detainees who will finally see accountability and justice prevail. #Syria

The fall of Syria’s Assad regime will reshape the country, with reverberations across the Middle East and beyond. Syrians deserve a respite to celebrate this moment, to begin recovering from the trauma of war and oppression, to welcome home prisoners rescued from the regime’s dungeons, and to mourn all those they have lost. Refugees deserve safety to return to. For citizens uneasy about what HTS rule might bring, assurances are needed that one autocratic clique won’t simply replace another. Most importantly, Syrians deserve the chance to rebuild their polity and society on their own terms. Outside powers, who helped drive Syria’s immensely destructive war, now need to avoid destabilising interference and help Syrians remake their country for the better. https://lnkd.in/e8tjVxMT

#Soldiers and officers of the 4th Division of the #Assad regime are being transported in green buses from the Al-Bukamal checkpoint towards #Syria What’s the #difference in how the Assad regime treats these forces compared to the so-called "#rebel" militias? Justice should be about holding accountable those who have wronged or committed crimes, not about the whims of individuals. How many Syrians were killed by these so-called "rebels," whether they supported the regime or not? Aren’t these Syrians who lost their lives? At the same time, Israel is bombing Syria, controlling Syrian territory up to 9 kilometers deep, and taking control of the Al-Wehda Dam. Why is there silence from the "rebels" and the Syrian government? #Syria #Justice #Israel #Militias #Assad #IsraeliAggression #SyriaCrisis

Syria: Ensure Transition Respects Human Rights (Dec. 10, 2024) – The leadership of any Syrian transitional government that emerges should take urgent steps to ensure respect for human rights obligations and lay the foundation for a new government based on democracy and the rule of law, DAWN said today. DAWN urged the emerging leadership in the country to establish a civilian-led transitional council, deploy its forces to protect vulnerable people from possible reprisals, abide by human rights obligations with respect to the treatment of detainees, and secure weapons facilities throughout the country before it seeks to demilitarize armed groups and merge them into a single, unified military force. DAWN urged the international community to support Syria to transition to democratic rule and end foreign military interference in the country. "The new Syrian government should recognize that its victory over the Assad regime is the result of the sacrifices of millions of Syrians who have suffered for over a decade in their struggle for democratic rule and respect for human rights," said Sarah Leah Whitson, Executive Director of DAWN. "It should urgently issue public commitments that it will respect the rights of the Syrian people to justice and immediately seek to establish democratic governance in the country." Syrian President Bashar al-Assad fled Damascus on Sunday as rebels entered the capital unopposed for the first time since 2018. Opposition forces are urging Syrians abroad to return, declaring the end of 50 years of Baath party rule. Assad's departure has been met with accusations of tyranny, and the Syrian Prime Minister is prepared to facilitate a handover. With the fall of Damascus, government forces now control only Latakia and Tartus. The rapidly advancing rebels, particularly Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), have encountered little resistance, presenting the most significant challenge to Assad's regime since the onset of the war. Amid the security crisis, residents are stockpiling supplies and fleeing to Lebanon, causing the main border crossing to close. The rebels achieved major victories, including the swift capture of Homs after intense fighting, threatening Assad's 24-year rule. Crowds in Homs celebrated with chants declaring that "Assad is gone," and the rebels liberated prisoners from a central prison there. Losing Homs is a strategic blow for Assad, disrupting his ties to coastal strongholds and posing a serious threat to his regime's survival. As tensions rise, Assad's traditional allies, including Russia, Hezbollah, and Iran, are providing minimal support due to various regional challenges. Meanwhile, while international powers advocate for a political solution, they remain divided on concrete actions, and the U.S. has indicated no intention to intervene in the conflict. #AsiaRisk #GeopoliticalConflictandDisputes #India Get a full accounting of the security situation in Asia by subscribing to Security Asia. New details emerge of ethnic cleansing in Darfur. New testimony details one of the worst atrocities of the year-long Sudanese civil war, the large-scale massacre of civilians as they desperately tried to flee an ethnic rampage in Darfur last summer. As El Fasher stands on the ‘precipice of a massacre’, rights groups call for sanctions after new testimony describes atrocities carried out by RSF paramilitaries in Sudan. https://lnkd.in/g52hzAX9 In the first of two articles on the crisis, I argue that with no military victory in sight, negotiation is the only path to peace in Sudan. Sudan needs an international coalition for peace and binding commitments on its future to stop the civil war that is benefiting no one except the generals. https://lnkd.in/gdy-vDjA
