🚨 NEW REPORT 🚨 WWF Global Arctic Programme's "blue corridors" report dives into the migratory behaviour of Arctic whales across the entire Arctic Ocean AND the impact of increased shipping in the wake of melting sea ice.   🐋 These vital whale superhighways are essential for their feeding, birthing and mating. For the first time, WWF Global Arctic Programme's new report explores Arctic whales’ migratory behaviour across the entire Arctic Ocean, including: 🐋 Where their blue corridors are in the Arctic Ocean. 📅 When the corridors are being used by the whales. 🚢 And how these whales’ journeys overlaps with ship traffic. Arctic blue corridors are migration superhighways that allow whales, seals, walrus and other marine animals to move between important habitats. Whales need different habitats for important life events, such as feeding, birth and mating. But whales face growing threats on their journeys: 🌡️ Climate change has reduced sea ice thickness and extent, affecting whale migration cues, shelter and access to food. 🚢 Less sea ice has also meant increased shipping activity. Between 2013-2023, a remarkable 37% more ships entered the Arctic. By protecting blue corridors – in the Arctic and beyond – we ensure that whales and other marine animals can reach the habitats they need for those important life events.
