Following the insightful discussions at the recent #AfricaForumBerlin, I took the opportunity to dive deeper into the roles that Europe and Africa must play in addressing the #globalconservation and #biodiversity crises in my latest op-ed for the German outlet taz. As highlighted during the forum, the urgency of stronger, equitable partnerships between our continents. Africa’s rich biodiversity is not only a local treasure but a global asset, and to protect it, we must shift the traditional conservation narrative. Europe has a pivotal role to play in supporting African-led initiatives that prioritize sustainable development, local leadership, and community-driven solutions. Our shared future depends on how well we work together to achieve a balance between economic growth and environmental stewardship. Conservation is no longer about protectionism; it’s about co-creating pathways for both continents that foster sustainable development. Europe must go beyond simply funding projects—it’s time to engage with Africa’s leaders and communities to craft solutions together. ♻️In collaboration with its partners, City Institute participated in a two-day workshop in Uppsala, Sweden, to explore opportunities for implementing sustainable natural sanitation systems in Ukraine. During the event, our colleague Iryna Vlasiuk, together with representatives from Львівводоканал Lvivvodokanal and Zero Waste Lviv, presented the local challenges and needs related to water treatment in Lviv communities. 🌊Why is this important? Lviv is uniquely situated on the watershed of both the Black Sea and the Baltic Sea. The quality of water flowing into the Baltic Sea is a significant factor in the city's international environmental partnerships. This project seeks to introduce innovative water treatment methods that are efficient, eco-friendly, and cost-effective, aligning with global sustainability goals. What did we bring back from Sweden? The workshop highlighted the potential of "natural" sanitation systems that are already being successfully utilized across Europe. These systems—such as ponds, constructed wetlands, and soil infiltration—function primarily under the force of gravity. They require minimal financial investment for installation and have low energy demands for maintenance, making them a viable solution for Ukraine, especially in the face of ongoing energy challenges. 💡What’s next? - Assess Feasibility: Evaluate the applicability of natural sanitation systems for Ukrainian communities, using northern Lviv communities as a case study. - Propose Solutions: Develop a range of sustainable wastewater management approaches tailored to current local challenges. - Secure Funding: Prepare detailed proposals to obtain funding and translate these concepts into practical, impactful changes. Is Belgium Living Within Its Safe Operating Space? What Are the Social Impacts of Crossing These Limits? Yesterday, 100 online participants attended the final presentation of a unique research project addressing this issue. At the request of the new Cerac - Climate Risk Assessment Center, our CEESE-ULB team, led primarily by Sandrine Meyer, contributed to analyzing the social impacts. This was done in collaboration with Ramboll (Francesca Finello) and building upon the work of CLIMACT. Here are three key findings from the analysis: 1.    Immediate Health Effects: The societal repercussions of overshooting these limits will most immediately manifest as detrimental health effects. 2.    Economic and Social Impact: The negative effects of physical hazards on specific economic sectors and infrastructure will likely trickle down, impacting households, labor and working conditions, access to goods and services, and labor standards. 3.    Vulnerable Industries: Industries that rely on natural resources, such as forestry, fishing, agriculture, and related food production, are particularly vulnerable. Overshooting planetary bounds can have different societal effects depending on how a measure's costs and benefits are allocated among different population groups. Measures may have regressive consequences and further disadvantage vulnerable groups when they are distributed unequally. I spent the better part of last week attending a workshop on how to involve women in conservation and environment projects in arid and semi-arid areas courtesy of IUCN Eastern and Southern Africa FAO, National Environment Management Authority among many other entities. Ensuring all are involved is crucial in Kenya, considering 80 per cent of Kenya's land area is classified as arid and semi-arid, covering 29 counties. It is home to about 16 million people. And as Kenya grapples with frequent droughts, women who produce 60-80% of the food have been severely affected and turn to environmentally harmful activities like charcoal burning. This has worsened the climate issue, and alternative ways of survival need to be devised. Mindsets need to be changed in especially the largely pastoralist communities where overgrazing is common and human-wildlife conflicts on the rise. The 10th Meeting of the Parties (#MOP10) to the Water Convention has officially concluded, marking a milestone with decisions that reinforce the Convention as a global framework for transboundary water cooperation. Held against a backdrop of rising water-related crises, #MOP10 gathered 500 participants from 100 countries, including over 40 high-level representatives, to shape the future of international water collaboration. Since the last Meeting in October 2021, nine new countries have joined the Convention, reflecting a 20% increase in Parties and highlighting its growing significance as a multilateral framework for water cooperation. With 55 Parties now onboard, the Water Convention is gaining traction as a critical tool for managing shared water resources across regions and sectors. Over the three-day meeting, Parties adopted a new programme of work for 2025-2027, tailored to meet diverse member needs and support initiatives like water quality, source-to-sea management, and biodiversity conservation.
