I’m honoured to be leading a panel on Shaping Sustainability Leaders at QS Reimagine Conference 2024 next month, exploring how higher education can better support the transition to a sustainable future by preparing graduates to be the changemakers the world needs. I'll be joined by three outstanding panellists who bring a wealth of experience and insight to today’s discussion: Jamie Agombar Executive Director of Students Organising for Sustainability (SOS-UK), Chaseley Cameron from the International Universities Climate Alliance at the UNSW and Martin Baxter CEO at IEMA. As we approach 2025, we face significant challenges in shaping an environmentally and socially sustainable future. With only six years left to meet the UN’s SDG targets, progress is slow—just 17% of the goals are on track, while many others are in decline. Meanwhile, geopolitical shifts continue to create instability in the prioritisation of environmental and social issues, leading to global consequences. Beyond achieving carbon neutrality and improving campus sustainability practices, universities must play a strong role in building a sustainable workforce and sustainable leadership – with the skills, vision, and determination to drive meaningful change in their communities and industries. I’m happy to share with you that I’ve completed the Business Sustainability Management program at the Cambridge Institute for Sustainability Leadership (CISL)! Balancing this program with my commitments was challenging yet rewarding. Many evenings and weekends were dedicated to studying whilst also nurturing #UNIQASustainableBusinessSolutions in its early days. There were moments when it felt overwhelming, but topics like #climateaction, #biodiversity, #environmentalrisks, #supplychain and the #circulareconomy drew me in and kept me going. This experience has been more than just learning; it’s been a turning point, bringing a new perspective to my role as a Business Resilience Advisor, helping businesses navigate sustainability with resilience and innovation. While sustainability can present barriers for corporates, I find it crucial to maintain close partnerships, create circular collaboration models, and build communities of expertise to overcome challenges and transform them into opportunities. This is a long journey, and as such, we must be patient, develop gradually, yet with clear, actionable goals. A special thanks to Head of Tutor Louise Nicholls and our true guardian angel Rida Bilgrami for your valuable guidance and practical insights. Only last week I successfully completed and submitted by last assignment for Sustainability Leadership in Business Course with Cambridge Institute for Sustainability Leadership (CISL) which was uplifting, demanding and truly inspiring. I am ecstatic that I have successfully completed the course with flying colours. It was an intense 8 weeks that took much hard work, commitment, studying 15-20 hours a week on top managing work, home, kids, and other commitments. It was totally worth it at the end. I’ve learned so much about the critical importance of sustainability in business, how we can all contribute to a greener, more equitable future.
