With Donald Trump’s recent election victory, the idea of a "Digital World Order" #digitalworldorder is gaining renewed significance. The U.S. is likely to pursue digital policies emphasizing American dominance in critical areas like artificial intelligence (AI), 5G, quantum computing, and cybersecurity. As global technology powers vie for influence, the urgency for Europe to strengthen its own digital presence has become paramount to avoid risks of digital colonialization and ensure its sovereignty. Digital colonialization occurs when foreign tech giants dominate data, infrastructure, and digital markets, creating dependency on external technologies and standards. Such dependency compromises Europe’s control over data privacy, cybersecurity, and local innovation. Given that the United States and China are establishing themselves as digital superpowers, Europe must take strategic steps to protect its values and foster its digital ecosystem independently. A major concern is data sovereignty. Europe’s General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) set a global benchmark for privacy, but increased foreign influence could weaken these protections. Reliance on external platforms for cloud services, data storage, and artificial intelligence tools puts the EU’s ability to safeguard citizens' information at risk. In the face of a changing digital landscape, Europe must establish its own secure infrastructure for data and a regulatory framework to maintain its values around privacy and ethical data use. Cybersecurity is another critical area. Dependency on foreign digital tools, particularly in sectors like defense and critical infrastructure, heightens exposure to cyber threats and increases vulnerabilities. A robust European digital presence requires investment in native cybersecurity technologies and a commitment to securing digital infrastructure across industries. Finally, fostering local innovation is essential. Dominance by external digital giants could stifle European startups and technology companies, limiting the continent’s potential for growth and innovation. By investing in research and development, Europe can nurture its own tech ecosystem, encouraging a competitive landscape that provides alternatives to foreign technologies. To counter the potential risks of digital colonialization, Europe needs a clear strategy to build its digital presence, support local innovation, and protect its digital sovereignty. With the global balance of power increasingly defined by digital supremacy, Europe’s proactive investment in its digital future is not just strategic but essential for maintaining its independence, values, and competitiveness. #investineuropeantech

Christoph Aeschlimann presented „From Telco to Tech-Co“: the r/evolutionary path #telecom service providers must take to succeed in today’s #dynamic market environment. For many years the telco services business was one-dimensional. The service providers operated a monolithic #infrastructure to deliver initially voice and later also data communication services. The #internet changed the telecommunications market - it became manifold and evolved very fast. The proliferation of new services opened the supplier side of the market for new competitors from IT, SW and content segments. To stay competitive, telcos must adapt - quickly and permanently. The evolution to players in the #software and content services markets cannot be based upon the former monolithical infrastructure. Disaggregation is a must: Telcos need to become software companies using the latest technologies in hardware and software, competent in development and operations, but especially in innovation. For example, #artificial_intelligence is extremely important for telcos. It provides huge opportunities by allowing for intelligent automation in service creation and operation as well as customer engagement in pre- and post-sales. Furthermore, partnerships play an increasingly critical role to create the #ecosystems they need to stay competitive in terms of speed and cost. The cooperation with software, cloud and content providers requires operating models embedded in a consistently integrated ecosystem. Telcos evolve into tech-co’s! Hence the business needs a radical modernization. Still network and infrastructure are necessary but by no means sufficient. A completely new „System of Engagement“ has to be created and constantly adapted. It is supported by „Systems of Record“, „Systems of Insight“ and „Operational Platforms“ that in turn are based on the network and IT infrastructure. This foundation of the business needs to be kept safe, resilient and operational by a critical „Systems of Trust“. However, the key success factors for these processes are traditional: developing of the culture and mindset, establishing processes and collaboration models, and making the transformation tangible, understandable and digestible for the most important asset - the people involved. The ICT Authority of Kenya is conducting a study on the digital skills gap in the country. This collaborative effort with government ministries and international organizations aims to identify the skills needed by ICT professionals across various sectors in Kenya's evolving digital landscape. The survey, which included all 47 counties, highlighted a high demand for skills in areas like cybersecurity, data analysis, and AI, while also pointing to a shortage of soft skills like creativity. The findings are informing the development of a national digital skills roadmap and training programs to equip Kenyans with the skills needed for the future of work.
