I had the opportunity to present a poster at the MFT Educator winter conference. Our project involved analysing challenging behaviour and aggressive incidents by elderly patients towards healthcare staff that were reported in elderly care wards. We analysed if there was a pattern to it, mostly in those with comorbidities like Dementia. This audit is shortly turning into QI project with potential interventions such as training the health care staff who are directly involved in caring for such patients in order to create better working environment. A long way to go but the basic research has been strong 😊 With Eleni Mallouppa

Most #dementia #caregivers do not think about coaching. But they should. Why? Because the healthcare system is not set up to help dementia caregivers with the day to day changes in dementia caregiving. Nor will it ever be. Bold statement, I know. The research shows that the most effective way to help dementia caregivers is through ongoing support over an extended period of time. Dementia care is an ever rolling stream, that keeps changing- sometimes on a daily basis. Healthcare is not set up to help with constant daily changes. That is why so many people struggle when they are dementia caregivers. Join me on May 8, 2024 for the Connecting Caregivers Conference with Linda Burhans where I will be presenting "How To Decrease Your Stress As A Dementia Caregiver Through Coaching". A unique and different way to approach caregiving. We do it for our kids when they need additional support. Why don't we do it for ourselves? The conference is free, you just need to register. So don't delay. Register today. https://lnkd.in/eza6i9re

This week on our blog we delve into Ethical Dilemmas with Dementia Caregiving. As individuals progress throughout the stages of Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia, ethical dilemmas can arise for family members and caregivers, especially spousal caregivers. While navigating these ethical issues depends on the person’s situation, we’ve compiled a guide to consult when dilemmas arise. This guide is compiled from evidence-based research and authorized best practices from leaders in Alzheimer’s disease and dementia research. Sometimes, the hardest conversations are the most important ones to have. Like talking about Medical Assistance in Dying (MAiD) being an option when diagnosed with dementia… BEFORE it’s too late.🩵 While MAiD has been legal throughout Canada since 2016, and dementia has always been a qualifying diagnosis, over the last few years my dear colleague Connie Jorsvik and I have noticed a steep rise in misunderstanding and misinformation about who qualifies, and about the process of applying and being approved for this procedure. This is why we have invited Canada's top expert and lead Medical Advisor to the BC Ministry of Health, the esteemed Dr. Stefanie Green, to join us in a rare online conversation about dementia and MAiD. Please register to attend ASAP - spaces limited: https://lnkd.in/gwjhqP9y Understanding Dementia and Medical Assistance in Dying (MAiD): An Evening with Connie Jorsvik, Christa Ovenell, and Dr. Stefanie Green, Canada‘s Top MAiD Advisor Nov 21st, 2024, 7-8:30 PM, PST ONLINE EVENT (NOT RECORDED) Tickets $25 If you are curious, want accurate information, or if you or a loved one are considering MAiD as a future option, please join us for answers to questions that are sometimes hardest to ask. For more than three decades, the Beers Criteria have been a cornerstone for clinicians and researchers. Although they have evolved in their scope, leadership, and methodology to better address the needs of older adults, their primary goal has consistently been the same - to enhance prescribing practices for older adults. One of the most difficult conversations to have involves talking with an aging parent about extended medical care. The shifting of roles can be challenging, and emotions often prevent important information from being exchanged and critical decisions from being made. It’s best to have a strategy for structuring the conversation, so here are some key concepts to consider.
