Our elders are facing a silent mental health crisis. Let's talk about it and take action. 🚨 Did you know: -Black adults report more persistent emotional distress than white adults -Poverty doubles the risk of serious psychological distress in our community -Only 1 in 3 Black adults who need mental health care actually receive it These aren't just stats. They're our mothers, grandmothers, and aunties. **Many of us are battling: -Overmedication without proper monitoring -Pressure for unnecessary hospitalization Lack of culturally sensitive care options But there's hope. -We can make a difference with a Community Mental Health Buddy System. Here's how it works: Volunteers sign up as Mental Health Buddies Buddies are paired with elders or caregivers needing support Buddies can: • Attend medical appointments to ask questions and take notes • Research and explain treatment options • Help coordinate between healthcare providers Small actions can create big change. 💔 "Did you know that crisis care in the U.S. often adds trauma rather than healing?" 🚨 Each year, 2 million people face crisis interventions, with 21-38% of 911 calls related to mental health or non-criminal concerns. Yet, instead of care, many face fear and harm: nearly 2,000 lives lost annually due to police involvement. 😞 👉🏽 60% of people with serious mental health conditions avoid seeking help because they fear police will get involved. This has to change. As a psychiatrist, I stand for a mental health system that heals, not harms. That’s why I support the SHIELD Act—to train mental health responders to offer compassionate care, free from police intervention. ✨ Let's reimagine crisis care. This #MentalHealthAwarenessWeek we want to highlight the importance of supporting the mental health needs of children in kinship care. 💛 Our research shows that children living in #KinshipCare - being raised by a relative or family friend because a parent can't - have often experienced trauma and loss. As a result, they are more likely to have higher levels of mental health needs than children in the general population. We know that the unmet demand for mental health support for children growing up in kinship care is significant. Even where this type of support is provided, #KinshipFamilies are struggling to access it. Kinship's 'Cost of Loving' report revealed that nearly two thirds of #KinshipCarers said accessing mental health support for their children was difficult or very difficult. Adolescence is an important period marked by significant physical, emotional, psychological and social changes. During this transition, mental health is an important concern. Addressing adolescent mental health is paramount, as it not only influences immediate well-being but also sets the foundation for the future. I'm actually super disappointed in this post. Boiling people down this way into a 'meme' is not very enlightened for a mental health advocacy group. People develop a mixture of mechanisms and lenses through which they see and show up in the world, largely through their childhood experiences. This is why trauma informed care is crucial. Context is important. Behaviors are symptoms of unaddressed root issues. This is why understanding modalities like polyvagal theory, IFS, etc. is crucial for professionals taking care of clients. We must meet people with compassion and help them understand why they do what they do. #traumainformedcare #polyvagaltheory #childhoodtrauma

I am honored to have participated in the Mental Health Mentorship and Advocacy training program conducted by NIIMHSA, which explored the profound impact of social media on mental health. While social media offers several benefits, its negative effects on adolescents and young people are particularly concerning. These include: Broken homes due to infidelity; social isolation and loneliness; cyberbullying and harassment; Increased risk of suicide; poor school performance; sleep disorders. To maximize the benefits of social media while minimizing its risks, it is crucial to educate young people on responsible social media use.
