Beyond timely availability of Interpreter and the rest, we must understand that having a sign language interpreter to interpret to the Deaf on an occasion does not singly mean access. If it does not convey the needed message with precision; if it does not consider the language ability of the Deaf audience, if it does not consider the peculiarity of the language environment, then, it is mere exercise, not access to the Deaf.

Deaf Awareness Week takes place between the 6th to the 12th of May. Let us take this time to celebrate our deaf community, raise awareness, and spread inclusivity! Here are A2i's top three tips for Deaf Awareness Week: 1. Find out communication preferences. Before your expected meeting, learn the individual's requirements and their preferred communication support. 2. Get the individual's attention before you speak. Try move into good lighting so they can see you, wave your hand in their line of vision, or lightly tap their shoulder. 3. Always face the individual. Communicate face-to-face and keep eye contact. This will help the person lip read and see your facial expressions if they need to. Learn more tips from our blog https://lnkd.in/e8Q2uih5 #DeafAwarenessWeek #DiversityInclusion #a11y #bsl

During the pandemic, when we wanted to put out information, the interpreter was mixing up the oxygen mask sign with the ventilator sign because he didn’t know the difference between the two. It is important that teachers and interpreters of sign language have subject related qualifications in order to communicate any message. For this, equivalent vocabulary has to be available in Sign language. For this, it has to be built. Together. *and it has to be shared widely with everyone to use correctly. (Edit)

Congratulations to all the Members of Parliament elected to the House of Commons👏 This Parliament must champion deaf children. It must support the urgent investment needed in early, effective support for all deaf children to develop language and communication, whether they use sign language, spoken language or both. Deaf children in the UK currently face a lifetime of disadvantage without access to early, effective support to develop language and communication. But together, we can change this. For those families who want their deaf child to learn to listen and talk, increasing access to Auditory Verbal therapy is vital. Recent public research shows that 85% of UK adults believe Auditory Verbal therapy should be available to deaf children via publicly funded services. But currently, less than 10% of deaf children can access this support. We’re ready to work with you to ensure all deaf children have the same opportunities in life as their hearing peers. It’s time to Hear Us Now. https://lnkd.in/d5tvqnqh #HearUsNow #GeneralElection #UKParliament #DeafChildren #VitalSupport
