Greetings from Cologne! Our co-founders Inna Nelles & Mattia Nelles are attending the Ukraine Conference of the State of North Rhine-Westphalia (NRW) with over 400 participants, 100 of whom are from 🇺🇦. Our home state of NRW was the first 🇩🇪 state to sign a partnership with a 🇺🇦 Oblast Dnipropetrovsk. The idea is to help Ukeainian friends with humanitarian aid and the recovery and link up cities, towns, administrations, businesses, civil society, hospitals, utility companies etc. There is a lot that both sides can learn from each other 💛💙 Later today at 16:00 CET, we are moderating the panel on civil society that as the German-Ukrainian Bureau organized. Three questions for Samantha Power: 1) Why did you spend more on USAID photographers for your post-genocide visit to Armenia 9/23 than on humanitarian aid programs in Artsakh over your first three years in office? 2) Why did you refuse to call starvation caused by Azerbaijan's blockade a crisis? 3) As a genocide scholar, why did you not condemn Azerbaijan's blockade of Artsakh as a Genocide, under Article II, (c) of the Genocide Convention: “Deliberately inflicting on the group conditions of life calculated to bring about its physical destruction”?

On 27 May, during the eighth edition of the Brussels Conference on ‘Supporting the future of Syria and the region' hosted by the European Union, the donor community pledged a total amount of €7.5 billion in support (€5 billion in grants & €2.5 billion in loans). This amount includes € 2.12 billion pledged by the EU itself (for 2024 & 2025), with the total sum pledged by the EU and its Member States amounting to almost €6 million. This strong commitment shows once more the willingness of the EU and the international community to support people affected by the crisis, both in Syria and in neighbouring countries.

🆕New in the library 📚 🚨 Two years into the conflict, Ukraine still grapples with the aftermath of Russia’s invasion. Over 3.67 million Ukrainians are displaced internally, with nearly 6 million scattered across Europe. With ongoing shelling and extensive damage, the country faces many challenges, including 10.5 billion USD in infrastructure losses. Families on the frontline and internally displaced persons (IDPs) continue to struggle, exhausting coping strategies and savings. CORE (Community Organized Relief Effort) conducted an assessment in Lvivska Oblast, revealing that half of IDPs aspire for private housing but are hindered by financial constraints. The rental assistance programme, supported by the Ukraine Humanitarian Fund, provided vital support to 300 households from December 2022 to August 2023 in Lviv and Lvivska oblast. This learning brief highlights the key insights and recommendations from this programme, offering pathways to scale up support in 2024. The world is out of balance—between soft power and hard power, between people and the planet, and between soldiers and civilians. Yet these imbalances are man-made. Recently, I sat down with the Washington Post’s Jonathan Capehart to talk about the IRC’s Emergency Watchlist, an analysis of the humanitarian crises most likely to worsen in the coming year. We talked about the obstacles these imbalances pose to crises and how righting them is both a moral and strategic imperative. Watch our conversation here: https://lnkd.in/e3FAtgrk

The situation regarding the Palestinian people is indeed complex and fraught with deep historical and political tensions. Many perceive a global media and political narrative that often overlooks the suffering of civilians in conflict zones, which is in fact a genocide of Palestinians at the hands of Israel, leading to strong feelings of injustice and frustration. Anyone impartial and independent person with conscience see a disparity in how the plight of different groups is perceived and represented. The labeling of individuals or groups involved in such conflicts, whether as “terrorists” or “freedom fighters,” can heavily influence public opinion and political action, is being played by the influential moneyed countries which is open mockery of ethics, laws and social justice but global sanity tend to start realizing the facts and started exerting some pressure on usurpers of the land and rights of Palestinian people.
Every year on this day, the international community stands in solidarity for the dignity, rights, justice and self-determination of the Palestinian people. This year’s commemoration is especially painful as those fundamental goals are as distant as they have ever been. As a matter of urgency, I appeal for full support of lifesaving humanitarian relief for the Palestinian people – in particular through the work of UNRWA, which represents an irreplaceable lifeline for millions of Palestinians. The United Nations will continue to stand in solidarity with the Palestinian people and their inalienable rights to live in peace, security and dignity.
