Dutch Greenhouse Delta received an Egyptian delegation participating in the influential program by Rijksdienst voor Ondernemend Nederland (RVO). In Egypt there is a growing demand to optimize fresh produce production. The delegation was eager to explore how Dutch-Egyptian collaboration could boost horticulture in Egypt🤝🌱 During the presentations by Marcel van Nijnatten (Ministerie van Landbouw, Natuur en Voedselkwaliteit), and Mirjam Boekestijn (Dutch Greenhouse Delta), the strength of Dutch horticulture in building sustainable ecosystems through collaboration was emphasized. This was followed by a tour at World Horti Center, during which DGD-partners discussed their added value for the Egyptian horticulture sector. This sparked an interesting discussion about the challenges and opportunities in Egypt's protected horticulture sector, with some key takeaways: 🇪🇬 There is significant demand from Egypt for effective Dutch (right-tech) interventions in the sector. 🇪🇬 The economic challenges highlighted in the study report by Delphy were confirmed. Egyptian farmers admire Dutch technology but often face financial constraints that prevent them from accessing it. 🇪🇬 The delegation looks forward to the initiative of a Partner for Business program, which will accelerate the country's horticultural ambitions and foster long-term collaboration between the Netherlands and Egypt. Currently, we are working on developing a 𝗣𝗮𝗿𝘁𝗻𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗜𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗻𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗕𝘂𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗲𝘀𝘀 (𝗣𝗜𝗕) 𝗶𝗻𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗮𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝘀𝗺𝗮𝗿𝘁 𝗵𝗼𝗿𝘁𝗶𝗰𝘂𝗹𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲 𝗶𝗻 𝗘𝗴𝘆𝗽𝘁. The goal is to foster long-term collaboration and sustainable growth in Egypt's smart horticulture landscape. Interested in our next steps or joining the new PIB as a Dutch organization? Our recent article "Vehicle Routing Problem in Sustainable Horticulture Supply Chain for Food Security Enhancement: a Case Study" has been published in Process Integration and Optimization for Sustainability. This study presents a Vehicle Routing for Sustainable Horticulture Products model designed to facilitate decision-making in this critical industry. As decision-makers seek to enhance sustainability practices in horticulture, there is a demand for increased productivity in transportation and a reduction in waste generated throughout the supply chain. Given that the horticulture supply chain is characterized by a high rate of perishability, this research aims to develop a comprehensive model that addresses sustainability issues arising from waste within the chain. This paper represents another contribution from my laboratory. I would like to extend my gratitude to Ms. Negin Faraji, Ms. Zahra Mohammadnazari, and Prof. Masoud Rabbani for their diligent efforts in bringing this publication to fruition.
