In late October 2024, Boko Haram attacked a Chadian military base, killing 40 soldiers. This led Chad to threaten pulling its forces from the Multinational Joint Task Force (MNJTF), citing a lack of cooperation following the attack. Chad’s military is a key pillar of the MNJTF, and its potential withdrawal would significantly weaken the force’s effectiveness in regional counter-terrorism efforts. On November 11, 2024, another deadly clash occurred between Chadian soldiers and Boko Haram militants, leaving 15 Chadian soldiers dead and 32 wounded, while 96 Boko Haram fighters were killed. With Boko Haram continuing to pose a serious threat, strengthening coordination and unity within the MNJTF is crucial to maintaining stability in the Lake Chad region. Dyami will continue to monitor the situation in the area. #Chad #MNJTF #Security #LakeChad #CounterTerrorism #Africa

The resurgence of Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) poses a significant threat to Pakistan’s internal stability and regional security, escalating since the return of the Afghan Taliban to power in 2021. Strengthened by alliances with other groups, leadership changes, and state sponsorship, TTP has expanded its operations, challenging counter-terrorism efforts. Despite Pakistan’s attempts at negotiation and recent military operations, the TTP's growing influence remains a pressing concern for South Asia’s stability. Following the kidnapping of the #ChibokGirls in 2014, Boko Haram has expanded into neighboring countries #Cameroon, #Chad, and #Niger, and has also demonstrated its capacity to seize and hold towns and villages, particularly during the height of its insurgency between 2014 and 2015. Despite setbacks following counterterrorism efforts by the Nigerian government and its partners since 2015, the movement continues to control territories in the Lake Chad Basin islands. Additionally, Boko Haram has expanded its operations toward northwest Nigeria, likely in response to ongoing military operations by the Lake Chad Basin Multinational Joint Task Force (MNJTF) in northeast Nigeria and other countries. Boko Haram and its offshoot — the Islamic State of West Africa Province (ISWAP) — have continued to rely on hit-and-run tactics that exploit the challenging terrain of northern Nigeria and the surrounding Lake Chad islands to evade military forces, allowing them to maintain a formidable advantage despite concerted counterterrorism efforts. Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s office unveiled a “reinvigorated” national counterterrorism policy. This strategy pledges a mix of “kinetic efforts,” new legislation to support terrorism prosecutions, and measures to combat violent extremism. On Tuesday, Sharif clarified that the plan, still in its early stages, will prioritize stepping up current intelligence-based operations over initiating military incursions. This significant move aims to address the rising threat of terrorism in #Pakistan, where assaults increased by two-thirds between 2022 and 2023. Pakistan has engaged in cross-border operations in #Afghanistan, pressured the #AfghanTaliban to curb anti-Pakistan militant activities, and held discussions with Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), the country’s biggest threat. This week’s Mali "In Focus" by Castor Vali examines the recent attack on Ménaka by Islamic State in the Greater Sahara (ISGS) and the group's growing dominance in eastern Mali and western Niger. Despite being repelled on 27 June, the militants' numbers indicate ISGS is intensifying efforts to push out the Malian Armed Forces. Following the Pulwama attack and subsequent events, the Indian government, led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has consistently emphasized a zero-tolerance policy towards terrorism. There has been a strong focus on national security, counter-terrorism measures, and diplomatic efforts to address cross-border terrorism. The Balakot airstrike in 2019 was positioned as a decisive response to terrorist activities, signaling a robust stance against those involved in promoting violence and destabilizing the region. India has continued to advocate for global cooperation in combating terrorism and has sought to isolate state-sponsored terrorism. Under Prime Minister Modi's leadership, there has been a concerted effort to strengthen internal security, enhance intelligence capabilities, and collaborate with the international community to address the broader issue of terrorism. However, it's essential to note that counter-terrorism policies are complex and multifaceted, involving diplomatic, military, and intelligence efforts. Furthermore, the government also prioritizes supporting the families of the martyrs by offering financial assistance, educational support, and various welfare measures. Policies and initiatives are implemented to ensure the well-being of those left behind, collectively paying tribute to the heroes who sacrificed their lives for the nation. #creativeleaders #india #pulwamattack #indianarmy #crpfindia #terroism

The Tongo Tongo ambush, which took place on October 4, 2017, in the village of Tongo Tongo, Niger, was a deadly encounter between U.S. and Nigerien soldiers and militants believed to be affiliated with ISIS in the Greater Sahara (ISIS-GS). A joint U.S.-Nigerien patrol was returning from a mission when they were attacked by a well-armed group of militants, leading to a fierce firefight. The ambush resulted in the deaths of four U.S. Special Forces soldiers and five Nigerien troops. The fallen U.S. soldiers were members of the 3rd Special Forces Group, and the attack shed light on the increasing terrorist threat in the Sahel region of West Africa. The attackers were reportedly outnumbered but used the element of surprise and the challenging terrain to overwhelm the patrol. The battle lasted for hours, with the U.S. and Nigerien forces requesting reinforcements and air support, which arrived after the initial firefight. The Tongo Tongo ambush sparked significant political and military scrutiny, particularly regarding U.S. military presence in Niger, the planning and intelligence behind the mission, and the response time for assistance. The incident raised questions about U.S. counterterrorism strategies in Africa, and the complexities of fighting extremist groups in remote and volatile regions. In the aftermath, a Pentagon investigation found that while the team had conducted the mission believing it to be low risk, several factors contributed to the ambush’s devastating outcome, including miscommunication and inadequate preparation for the potential threat level. The deaths of the U.S. soldiers, including Sgt. La David Johnson, whose body was found two days later after he was initially separated from the group, received significant attention, particularly in media and political circles. The Tongo Tongo ambush remains a critical moment that underscores the risks of U.S. military operations in regions facing insurgency, the evolving threat of jihadist groups in Africa, and the need for robust planning and intelligence when conducting missions in high-risk areas. #Niger #TongoTongo #ISIS #Africa #army #rangers #delta #specialforces #military #ambush #counterterrorism #terrorist #Sacrifice #loyalty #Sacrifice #neverforgotten #Honor

I am excited to share my latest article, "Pakistan's Counterterrorism Strategy: Beyond Azm-e-Istehkam," for the Royal United Services Institute (RUSI), a leading defense and security think tank based in the UK. I argued that Operation Azm-e-Istehkam, like its predecessors, is unlikely to bring lasting peace unless Pakistan shifts to a more holistic and integrated strategy. The military alone cannot win this war; true victory requires the backing of socioeconomic development, robust legal frameworks, political unity, and unwavering public support. I delved into how, with the launch of this latest military counterterrorism operation, the country can ensure that it does not repeat past mistakes. It's time for a fresh perspective and a new approach. Read the full article here: https://lnkd.in/d5jMahVe. #AzmeIstehkam #Counterterrorism #Pakistan #SecurityStudies #PolicyAnalysis
