Did you know that in the UK alone, we spend over £960 million on Easter goodies, resulting in tons of waste? From Easter egg plastic packaging to leftover food, the numbers are staggering. WRAP estimates up to 4.5Mt of food that could have been eaten is being wasted in the UK annually. Let's reduce our impact and make this holiday more sustainable: 💚 Reduce, Reuse, Recycle: Let's aim to recycle every piece of Easter egg packaging we encounter. By doing so, we could save 1,170,000 kWh of energy 💚 Plan your Easter feast wisely to avoid food waste. Get creative with leftovers or consider donating excess food to those in need 💚 When gifting, think sustainable! Choose presents with minimal packaging or go for experiences instead of material goods. Let's make this Easter not only about indulgence but also about conscious choices that benefit our planet. WRAP just concluded its Food Waste Action Week and provided ways to help homes fight food waste. https://lnkd.in/er3BSDhZ #EcoFriendlyEaster #SustainableCelebration #ReduceReuseRecycle #EasterWeekend #Overconsumption #ClimateAction #echichemovement

Anti-waste charity Wrap is calling for UK supermarkets to phase out plastic packaging on 21 types of whole, uncut fruits and vegetables under 1.5kg by 2030. With an eye on reducing the 70,000 tonnes of single-use plastic used each year, the initiative aims to cut down both plastic waste and food waste, urging consumers to buy only what they need. However, industry leaders highlight the role of plastic in extending shelf life, limiting food waste, and supporting branding. Nigel Jennery, CEO of the Fresh Produce Consortium, emphasises the need to balance sustainability goals with practical realities and consumer preferences. 👉 What are your thoughts on Wrap’s push for plastic-free produce by 2030? And how do you think the industry should tackle the issue? Read the full article here: https://lnkd.in/dfVEViSu #opp #freshproducepacking #plasticpackagingban

Since starting my business, I've always strived to be a "wee business making a wee difference." Often, that’s meant supporting charities close to my heart. But for World Earth Day, I wanted to highlight a small way I contribute to a healthier planet: recycling soft plastics! ♻ We all know about bottles and containers, but carrier bags, plastic wrap, crisp packets, even those pesky window envelopes - they're often overlooked. A great article by BBC News explores the challenges and potential of soft plastic recycling (https://lnkd.in/eBNkkEnr) Luckily, some companies like TerraCycle are processing these materials. While many councils don't collect them yet, supermarkets like Aldi UK, Tesco, and the Co-op offer fantastic in-store recycling points. It's easy to separate my soft plastics and drop them off while I shop. Honestly, the amount of soft plastic waste we generate is surprising. But knowing I'm keeping it out of landfills gives me a real sense of satisfaction. Happy Earth Day! What small changes are you making for a more sustainable future? #worldearthday #recycle #softplastics #makeadifference #everybithelps

September 29 will be #FLWday International Day of Food Loss and Waste, I took the quiz https://lnkd.in/dvMFFsW3 designed by UN Environment Programme discovering that we are wasting ~20% of all available food! 🏡 Most food wastage, 60%, occurs in the home. So, it's up to us: let's take the challenge focusing on reducing, reusing and recycling: 🍽 Reduce: Measure portion sizes to minimize potential waste and/or write a shopping list and avoid bulk promotions. 👩🍳 Reuse: Limit food waste by using take away options and donating to food banks. Cook the leftover ingredients: there are many super good recipes you can prepare! ♻ Recycle: Compost any remaining food waste and ask one’s local government about food waste collection

University of South Carolina has four Certified Green Restaurants® on its campus in Columbia, SC! Certified Green Restaurants® Honey Comb Cafe, Chick-fil-A, Global Cafe, and Fresh Greenes have collectively taken more than 105 environmental steps to earn over 530 GreenPoints™. These restaurants decrease their waste by up to 90% every year through composting pre-consumer food waste and recycling plastic, glass, aluminum, cardboard, and paper. All four locations are also saving energy with a wall-mounted exhaust hood that captures more smoke and grease while using less energy than a free standing hood. While most people understand poor sustainability practices negatively impact the environment, it can be difficult to make the jump to understand the large effect our own small actions have when they add up with others’. How much damage can one plastic straw do? Does using one plastic bag for take-out really matter? There are 500 million plastic straws used in the U.S. every day. Although using one straw seems harmless, when you think about the number of straws used in the U.S. in only one day, that seemingly harmless one-time use ends up being billions of used straws each year. It’s important to make a personal connection to find meaning in taking sustainable actions. What drives you to make environmentally sustainable decisions? Every day is #StopFoodWasteDay at Sysco! As part of our 2025 sustainability goals, we’re committed to diverting 90% of our food and operations waste. To avoid food ending up in landfills, we prioritize efforts to quickly resell or donate products before they spoil. In FY2023, this helped us to nourish our communities by donating more than 17 million meals. We also divert food waste to various organic waste outlets to convert it into animal feed, biofuel or support composting efforts.
