Closer to the Land is one project I’ve had the privilege to help raise funds to launch and sustain over the past couple of years. Welcoming primary and secondary schools, youth organisations and young people in social care to the 220-acre Ashburnham Place estate to switch off digitally and spend time outdoors. Getting their hands dirty exploring, picking, planting, foraging, baking, pickling and composting. A key part is about building community and making new friends. And that’s done by eating together. Enjoying the soup, the bread, the pickles they’ve made. Or the fruit and vegetables they’ve picked. It’s not overly surprising to hear how so many young people feel disconnected and isolated in such a ‘connected’ world. But it's so good to witness some of the discussions around their attitudes and ideas around food, the environment and sustainability. Celebrating this year’s World Food Day on the theme, “Right to Foods for a Better Life and a Better Future”, reminds us that everyone deserves access to nutritious, affordable, and sustainable food. At Cocoa360, we believe that the right to food goes beyond just nourishment—it’s about creating opportunities for a better life. Our community cocoa farm, managed by the dedicated parents of our girls, is a shining example of how food can drive opportunity, education, and health. It’s not just about food on our plates, but ensuring that no one is left behind when it comes to basic human rights. Today let’s reflect, raise awareness, and take meaningful action to build a world where no one goes hungry, and every family has the tools to grow, share, and thrive. Here's a practical way to help some unhoused folk in Toronto and Peel manage the upcoming heatwave.
PLEASE DONATE! A heatwave is arriving next week. For people without housing, bottled water is an emergency health care need in the deadly summer heat — in fact, more unhoused people die from complications due to the heat than from the winter cold. This is why I'm working with Project FoodChain to fundraise for and distribute 236,160 bottles of water to 72 agencies across Toronto and Peel Region, who in turn distribute it directly to unhoused people. Since 2020, Project FoodChain has distributed over 1,000,000 bottles of water — including to my agency, All Saints Church-Community Centre. Can you donate to help keep people without access to shelter or running water healthy this summer? https://lnkd.in/g9ac8jj8

As we witness a moderate slowdown in food price growth to 2.4%, it's crucial to remember that the overall cost of essentials continues to challenge many in our communities. This glimpse into the current state of food prices reveals not just a deceleration in some areas but also the anticipation of further increases in 2024, including potential impacts from the rise in carbon tax. At Fresh Routes, we're more committed than ever to our mission of providing affordable, nutritious food amidst these fluctuations. Join us in this journey of support and resilience. Every action counts, whether it's donating, volunteering, or spreading awareness. Together, we can make a meaningful difference. #FoodSecurity #FoodAccess #Calgary #CommunitySupport

We're pleased to announce our partnership with Oxford Mutual Aid, a cornerstone of the Cowley community, ensuring everyone has access to food 🍲 Located at Richard Benson Hall, they're a lifeline for over 900 individuals, distributing food parcels six days a week. Their old delivery vehicle's retirement threatened their vital service 🚚 Thanks to ODS (that's us!), Oxford Mutual Aid is back on the road with a game-changer: a clean, MOT'd electric vehicle from our pool, offered at a reduced cost. This new van boasts several advantages: it's more accessible and user-friendly for volunteers, and it allows Oxford Mutual Aid to operate within the Zero Emission Zone ⚡ Most importantly, it ensures they can continue reaching the people who rely on them most. 🙌 Here's a snapshot of Oxford Mutual Aid's incredible work: - Delivers food parcels to over 210 households weekly. - Bridges the gap for those facing food insecurity. - Operates on a community-led model, driven by volunteers and staff. - Serves the community, regardless of circumstances. 🤝 Join us in supporting Oxford Mutual Aid: - Follow them on social media to stay informed about their latest initiatives and to see the impact your support has. - Volunteer your time with their incredible team and directly contribute to their food distribution efforts. - Donate food supplies to help keep their shelves stocked and ensure families receive the support they need. Visit their website or contact them directly for a list of most-needed items: volunteering@oxfordmutualaid.org. #CommunitySupport #FoodDistribution #VolunteerEfforts #LocalCommunity #FoodSecurity #SupportLocalCauses #EV #ElectricVehicle #ZEZ #SustainableTransport #Oxford #OxfordCity

💙 Thanks to everyone that visited our Community Fridge this week. 💙 Your visits make a real difference in our mission to reduce food waste and strengthen community bonds. 🍏 Purpose of the Community Fridge: The core purpose of our Community Fridge is to rescue fresh food from going to waste and bring our community together. 🛒 How It Works: To keep our Fridge running, we rely on your generous donations. This includes surplus from supermarkets, local food businesses, producers, households, and gardens. Your contributions fuel the spirit of sharing and mutual support that defines our community. 🌐 The Community Fridge Network: We're proud to be part of the Community Fridge Network with Hubbub, joining over 300 fridges across the UK in the fight against food waste. 🚫 Not a Food Bank: It's important to note that our Community Fridge is not a food bank. Swansea has several food banks available for those in need. We are here to create a space where surplus food finds a new home and a community spirit flourishes. 🌈 Operating on Trust: The Community Fridge is for everyone, fostering a sense of shared responsibility for our environment and each other. As we move forward, let's continue this amazing journey together. When attending our Fridge, please be mindful of those around you and our local residents. We want to be able to operate within the true spirit of a Community Fridge. Please bring your own standard sized carrier bag and a suggested donation of £2.00 when you visit us. #swanseacommunityfridge #reducefoodwaste #respectothers #CommunitySupportingCommunity #sharingiscaring #swansea #foodwastewarriors #goleudy

Return and Earn proudly celebrates 11 billion bottles, cans, and cartons recycled through NSW’s network of 620 return points. Not only has $1.1 billion in container refunds gone back into participants' pockets, but $54 million has been raised from donations and site hosting fees to support charities and community groups using the scheme’s fundraising features. This milestone is not possible without the eight out of ten adults in NSW who are regularly returning their containers, helping reduce litter and keep materials in use longer to support a growing domestic circular economy. We are excited to see the positive impacts towards sustainability as we convert waste into a valuable resource and deliver tangible social, economic, and environmental benefits to the community. Spotlight on Impact: Eat Up Australia and Lyndon Galea's Remarkable Contribution to Education Through Nutrition This week, I had the privilege of speaking with Lyndon Galea, the driving force behind Eat Up Australia. This incredible initiative supports 650 schools across the country each year, ensuring that no child's learning is compromised by hunger. In the realm of hospitality, we understand that food is not just about sustenance; it's an act of service and a gesture of gratitude. Eat Up's mission is powered by the generosity of community volunteers and donations from committed partners like Goodman Fielder, Bidfood, Sanitarium, Peerless, and Good Food Partners. It's more than just preparing sandwiches; it’s about showing our children that their community cares and sees them. I am deeply inspired by the simple yet profound impact of Eat Up. It’s a reminder that in hospitality, like in life, the small acts of giving can have an enormous impact—providing not just a meal but hope. Call to Action for Corporate Partners: If your organisation is looking for a meaningful way to give back, consider joining Eat Up in making sandwiches or providing support. It’s a tangible way to contribute to the well-being of our children and ensure they have the energy to learn and thrive. The link to their website is here: https://lnkd.in/ea9Md5FW Let’s champion initiatives like Eat Up that break down barriers to education and build up our communities. Every little bit counts towards nurturing a generation that feels valued, supported, and empowered. #Education #CommunitySupport #HospitalityIndustry #ChildWellbeing #EatUpAustralia #CorporateResponsibility
