New 1,700-unit #development inspired by #Milton’s natural setting There is an art when it comes to designing a modern development in Milton. A back-and-forth among architects, designers, town planners and future neighbours. The multi-step process to get from a #developer purchasing a lot to having people move in is often fraught with setbacks and compromises, by all parties. But those seem to be in the past for The Laurels, a new Mattamy Homes development planned for the west side of Regional Road 25, north of Britannia Road. Mattamy Homes is making a sustainability commitment through various initiatives to minimize its carbon footprint. These include optimizing the building envelope for energy efficiency and cost savings, using geothermal systems for heating and cooling to cut energy use, employing energy recovery ventilators for better air quality, and more. Saudi Arabia is building a huge linear city in the desert - The Line. It claims to be a "revolution in urban living," but is a line really the best shape for a city? And would you actually want to live in one? I asked city planners, architects, and academics to explain the benefits of linear urban life and look at whether The Line really holds up to its promises. "These schemes, and the Saudi one is a classic example, map out a hi-tech utopian future but never engage with people as they really are. In my opinion, linear city schemes are best left as design exercises for third-year architectural students." More at Business Insider #Neom #TheLine #SaudiArabia
Saudi Arabia is trying to build the largest linear city ever. It's a visionary but flawed concept, urban planners say.

OLT Approves Redevelopment Of Moriyama-Designed Japanese Cultural Centre The Ontario Land Tribunal has granted critical approvals for the #redevelopment of the JCCC - Japanese Canadian Cultural Centre — a #Toronto landmark at 123 Wynford Drive that some have argued holds not only architectural significance due to its ties to Raymond Moriyama but historical value and should be preserved as is. Nonetheless, plans that come from a #development group made up of Originate Developments, Westdale Properties, and Cameron Stephens call for a pair of #residential towers to be integrated into the the site of the Centre — those came to light in August of 2022, and are for a 48-storey building that would rise over the original building, and a 55-storey building that would overlook the streets closer to Wynford Drive. The Hidden Challenges: Dubai's Burj Khalifa and Its Sewage Solution 🌆 As professionals in the field of architecture and urban planning, we are often captivated by the marvels of modern engineering. The Burj Khalifa, standing tall at 828 meters, is a testament to human ingenuity and ambition. However, beyond its dazzling exterior and groundbreaking design lies a lesser-known aspect that highlights the complexities of building in urban environments. 🛠️ The Sewage Conundrum Despite its stature as the world's tallest building, the Burj Khalifa does not have a conventional sewage system. Instead, the waste is collected in trucks and transported to a treatment facility. This logistical solution underscores the unique challenges faced when constructing such an iconic structure in the heart of a bustling city. 🌍 Urban Infrastructure and Sustainability This unconventional method raises important discussions about urban infrastructure and sustainability. As we push the boundaries of architectural design, it becomes imperative to address the foundational systems that support these grand structures. The Burj Khalifa's situation serves as a reminder that our pursuit of architectural excellence must go hand-in-hand with sustainable and practical infrastructure solutions. 📈 Looking Ahead As we continue to innovate and design the skylines of the future, let us prioritize comprehensive planning that integrates both aesthetic brilliance and functional efficiency. The Burj Khalifa stands as a symbol of what we can achieve, and also as a lesson on the importance of holistic architectural and urban planning. . . . . . . #Architecture #UrbanPlanning #SustainableDesign #BurjKhalifa #EngineeringMarvels #InfrastructureChallenges

Unveiling the Vision Behind The Abdali The Abdali project has undoubtedly become a game-changer in the modern development of the Kingdom, setting new standards for urban planning and design. From its humble beginnings to its current state as the thriving heart of the city, the project stands as a testament to visionary thinking and meticulous execution. The Magic of Beginnings The idea behind The Abdali was to fundamentally transform urban development in Jordan and establish the country's largest mixed-use project that would embody a forward-thinking approach to economic planning, centered around modernity, entertainment, and trade. We also aimed to challenge the conventional perception of Amman as a Cement City with limited entertainment options and few public spaces. Fast forward to today, and the impact of The Abdali is undeniable. What was once a largely administrative district has transformed into a bustling area that seamlessly evolved into an attractive destination where people can live, work, dine, shop, and enjoy various forms of entertainment. A Forward Thinking Approach One of the key secrets of The Abdali's outstanding success can be attributed to its forward-thinking approach. The infrastructure is state-of-the-art, designed in collaboration with renowned multinational developers while adhering to the highest local mixed-use planning codes. For example, the location is considered the only place in Amman with an IT telecom service platform that has a 4-nine reliability status. The Abdali's modern infrastructure has played a crucial role in achieving its primary objective of bringing the private sector to the forefront of the Jordanian economy. Over the years, in collaboration with the public sector, it has successfully attracted significant investments from the surrounding region, boosting economic growth in the Kingdom. Futuristic Vision Looking ahead, major developments lie ahead for The Abdali as it enters its second phase and expands into a larger area. Initially, the plan was to allocate 40 percent of the expansion to real-estate and residential apartments. However, this plan has since changed due to shifting trends and this demonstrates our commitment to progress ensuring that the project continues to evolve in ways that exceed expectations. The Abdali’s success serves as an inspiration for urban planners in the country which strive towards sustainable development and creating livable spaces that enhance both functionality and beauty. Abdali will continue pushing boundaries in shaping our city’s future landscapes.

The future of Neom, Saudi Arabia's enormous city building project, is looking shaky as costs soar and sloppy construction setbacks mount, The Wall Street Journal reports. Constructing its centerpiece, "the Line," was never going to be easy. The uber-ambitious pair of skyscrapers is supposed to be taller than the Empire State Building and span 105 miles of desert, its western end terminating on the coast of the Red Sea. That staggering scale comes with staggering costs. Officially, Neom was budgeted at $500 billion, which is more than 50 percent of Saudi Arabia's federal budget. But those projections may have been too optimistic. According to employees working on the project and people familiar with the plans, just the first 1.5 miles of the Line will cost more than $100 billion, with the entire project expected to easily clear $2 trillion — more than the GDP of Brazil. Under the driving vision of Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, the Line will be 1,640 feet tall at its highest points. Spread across a hundred miles, that verticality will allow for more than seven billion square feet of floor space, according to the WSJ, which is 29 percent larger than all the buildings in New York City. So far, construction has been disjointed and haphazard. The Line's foundations were being built years before architects had finished designing the above-ground structure in order to show progress to the crown prince, according to the newspaper. When the architects decided on another site, the initial foundations were abandoned. Elsewhere along the Line, workers are currently digging an enormous 450 acre pit that's 50 feet below sea level for the construction of a marina. In a comical turn of events, according to the WSJ, the veritable mountain of all the dirt they excavated was dumped right on top of where a waterway is supposed to be built. Work followed to painstakingly re-excavate the huge dirt pile and move it somewhere else — a literal example of the project designers digging themselves into a hole. #construction #capital #megaproject #budget #theline #saudiarabia https://lnkd.in/dCgAwfZg
