Yesterday, on World Refugee Day, June 20, 2024, we were reminded of the urgent need to strengthen durable solutions for refugees, particularly through voluntary repatriation. To achieve this, we must address the social, economic, and political challenges in countries of origin. The refugee crisis, largely caused by civil wars and conflicts, affects many regions, including Sub-Saharan Africa. South Sudan, ravaged by conflict since 2013, is a stark example. To stem the tide, organizations, CSOs, and actors involved in refugee response must scale up rehabilitation efforts in countries of origin. By implementing development programs, projects, and activities in war-torn communities like South Sudan, we can support the remaining residents and encourage their displaced family members to return home. This will foster development and rebuild affected areas. Peacebuilding initiatives, such as conflict resolution training, community dialogues, memorial prayers, and peer support programs, are crucial in this process. Together, we can mitigate the refugee crisis and create a better future for all. #UN #UNHCR #USAID #SRH #WorldRefugeeDay #RefugeeSupport #DurableSolutions By Komakech Stephen

"We are witnessing unspeakable human suffering due to the proliferation of conflicts lacking political solutions and the normalisation of IHL violations. Indiscriminate attacks on civilians and humanitarian workers, the bombing of schools and hospitals, and the use of starvation and sexual violence as methods of warfare are devastating communities worldwide. Climate shocks, economic fragility, and protracted conflict are exacerbating humanitarian needs, leading to unprecedented levels of displacement and an escalating global hunger crisis. "Despite exceptional prioritization efforts, humanitarian funding lags behind and ODA cuts impact both humanitarian action and development gains. We must turn the tide together in 2025." Concern Worldwide is among the 109 humanitarian organisations that has signed the joint statement on the Global Humanitarian Overview 2025. Read the full statement below:
🎯What can we do about the unbearable suffering we see everyday? Climate shocks, fragile economies, and prolonged conflicts are making things worse. On #World Refugee Day, June 20th, what should have been a day of reflection and unity turned into a day marked by violent clashes at the #Kakuma Refugee Camp and #Kalobeyei Settlement, affecting the #Nuer and #Anuak communities from #South Sudan. This unfortunate violence has led to significant loss of lives and destruction of property, deeply disturbing the lives of many innocent residents who sought refuge and safety within and outside these areas. The United Nations Refugee Agency (UNHCR) is actively calling for an immediate cessation of violence and urging all members of the affected communities to come together in a spirit of peace. The organization stresses the essential principles of respecting diversity and fostering peaceful coexistence as foundational elements for community well-being. Such unity is crucial not only for the camp's immediate peace but also for its long-term development. #UNHCR has outlined a series of appeals and instructions to the community leaders, parents, religious figures, and the youth, urging them to halt the hostilities and strive for dialogue and understanding. The agency has also coordinated with #Kenyan authorities to implement increased security measures, including enhanced patrols and potential roadblocks, to prevent further violence and ensure the safety of the camp's residents. For those in need of assistance or facing emergencies within #Kakuma and #Kalobeyei, the following helpline numbers are available around the clock: - #UNHCR Security: Tel, 0721 628 267, 0745 855 370 - #DRS Security: Tel, 0720 387 061, 0720 468 082 - #Police OCS: Tel, 0729 790 714 The #UNHCR remains committed to safeguarding the lives and rights of all #refugees within these communities. It underscores the importance of collective efforts toward building a peaceful environment where everyone can thrive. This commitment to peace is a reminder of the shared aspirations for a secure and prosperous future for all, regardless of nationality or background. Let us all respond to this call with #solidarity and #urgency. #UNHCR #PeaceInKakuma #RefugeeSafety #WorldRefugeeDay #StopTheViolence #KakumaCamp #HumanRights #DRS #GoK

The situation in #Sudan is rapidly deteriorating, with some areas now reporting famine conditions—particularly in conflict-affected regions where access to aid is restricted. But conflict alone isn't the root cause. Sudan’s struggle with frequent droughts, unpredictable rainfall, and a reliance on natural resources has made the country extremely vulnerable to climate change. The consequences are severe: crop failure, displacement, and the spread of deadly waterborne diseases. We’ve seen how these crises can spiral, turning initial political conflicts into battles over scarce resources like water and grazing land. 🌱💧 In #emergencies like the one unfolding in Sudan, it may seem secondary to focus on climate and environmental issues. However, as soon as the immediate crisis allows, addressing #climate resilience and integrating environmental management into humanitarian responses must be a priority. #SudanCrisis #HumanitarianAid #ClimateChange #FoodSecurity #EnvironmentalResilience #ClimateAction #SustainableDevelopment #ClimateCrisis
We cannot be clearer: #Sudan is experiencing a starvation crisis of historic proportions. And yet, the silence is deafening. In partnership with Norwegian Refugee Council and Danish Refugee Council / Dansk Flygtningehjælp, we urgently call on the international community to address the immense hunger crisis within the country. #TalkAboutSudan 🔗 Read our new report: https://lnkd.in/gkmXM4Us

In the two years since the start of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, more than 14 million people have been displaced. This is almost a third of the country’s population. This was reported by the UN International Organization for Migration (IOM). It is noted that about 3.7 million people are displaced within Ukraine, and almost 6.5 million are refugees abroad. More than 4.5 million have returned home from abroad or from places of displacement within the country. In 2024, more than 14.6 million people – 40% of the total population of Ukraine – will need some form of humanitarian assistance, while 2.2 million Ukrainian refugees will need assistance in neighboring countries, the IOM report says. We thank the Institute of International Education for the significant support of Ukrainian educators, scholars, researchers, students, and institutions.
Did you know? 1 out of 69 people worldwide has been forced to flee their homes, according to data from UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency. As we commemorate #WorldRefugeeDay, the 2024 theme "Hope away from home – a world where refugees are always included," celebrates the resilience and strength of refugees and our duty to support inclusivity. From the war in Ukraine to decades-long conflict in Myanmar, there are countless resilient, ambitious individuals striving to draw on their talents—and unique life experiences—to contribute to society and rebuild their home countries. At IIE, we believe that investing in refugees’ education is the key to making this vision a reality.
