In conversation with Jonathon Reynolds, Shadow Secretary of State for Business and Trade, rachel sylvester at The Times has just highlighted the skills gap and disconnect between the current education system and employment and how labour would tackle this problem. Jonathon responded, stating that education has been one of the longest running policy problems of the last 100 years. Labour have proposed changes to grow the skills levy and he highlighted the work of the LSIPs and the launch of the improved careers provision, including businesses to deliver some of the programme. He would like to see a curriculum that is shaped by business voice and that makes young people aware of their local labour market. Harrison College are already disrupting the education space in Doncaster and already include strategies from the Shadow Secretary of State amongst many more. Our study programme is skills based, taking guidance from our local labour market and identified skills gaps that business have highlighted. We engage with over a network of 80 businesses each year resulting in over 1,000 employer engagements each year, with a cohort of only 60 young people. Our internship programme allows our students to develop vital employability skills in the workplace in a range of sectors, resulting in a destination rate of over 90%. We are already leading change. We are preparing young people for work, not to sit exams. ARE EARLY TALENT TEAMS READY FOR THE (PROBABLE) CHANGE OF GOVERNMENT? We're three weeks from the election, and many unknowns remain. But, we have enough clues to get started – so that's what our Good + Fair Employers Club members will be doing on Wednesday, over a lovely lunch in central London! Our new advisory board member Iain Gallagher (ex-head of early talent at Santander UK) has been studying the party manifestos, and will kick off the day by presenting his insights and recommendations to our G+F members, for deeper discussion. While we don’t have all the details, it looks likely that government-funded #traineeships will return. How can #EarlyTalent teams prepare for that - and what did we learn from last time? (I have thoughts on this myself - having seen 'bad and unfair'(!) employers like Poundland & Dealz use them to take advantage of jobless youngsters, and replace paid workers😫). In addition, changes to the #apprenticeships funding model mean that #recruitment and talent/ #development teams will need to collaborate more closely than ever before. Is your organisation set up for success? (And yes, Iain has looked at all the manifestos, not just Labour's. A shock #election result is hard to imagine, but it’s good to factor in opposing policies. For example, was there *anything* good about the Conservatives’ vision for National Service? Let’s discuss!) It's also likely we'll talk about #DEI, what early talent teams should prioritise when budgets remain tight and teams are slim, and which suppliers provide the best ROI... As well as young people's expectations about the workplace, what's happening at #universities, and whole lot more!
