We’re recruiting for a new Chair to lead our Board of Trustees, as well as a Safeguarding Trustee. Both roles are crucial to the governance and development of Ella's as an organisation, as our mission to unlock freedom among survivors of trafficking and exploitation. Aspiring trustees should understand the work we do, be compassionate, support Ella’s’ development to reach more women and be able to help Ella’s deliver the best outcomes for survivors. We would particularly love to hear from people who have benefited from a service like Ella’s, so we can learn from your lived experience. Deadline for applications: 9:00am on Monday 13 January 2025 #Trustee #Chair #Safeguarding https://lnkd.in/dTe__bX

Some personal news..in early 2025 I'll be stepping down from my trustee and non-exec governance roles. This means there’s an exciting opportunity for someone to take on the role of Chair of Trustees at Ella's —a truly vital and impactful organisation supporting survivors of trafficking and exploitation in the UK. Ella's has achieved incredible growth and impact since becoming an independent charity just five years ago and it has been such a privilege to be part of that story as a trustee. Now, the time feels right for a fresh Chair to guide the organisation through its next stage of growth and development. We’re seeking someone who shares a deep passion for Ella’s mission: ensuring survivors have the care and support they need to recover and build lives that are safe and free. In particular, we’d love to hear from people with lived experience of services like Ella’s, who can bring invaluable insight to this role. If you, or someone you know, might be a great fit, I’d be delighted to connect you with the team at Ella’s—or have a chat to explore further. As I step away from my governance roles after 8 years in some form of charity and social enterprise governance, I’m reflecting on a challenging year. Navigating The Juggle after maternity leave —balancing my leadership role, two governance positions, and being a present parent, friend, and family member—has been a lesson in resilience, limits, and the dark art of functioning without sleep! This decision is partly about prioritising balance and avoiding burnout after a tough 2024. While I know so many working mothers who seem at times to achieve having both a career and young children with greater ease than I've managed this year, I also know that doing both well is only possible due to a precarious mix of support, care, luck, timing, flexibility, caffeine, Calpol and cash! I’m learning where I can make choices that work for me. I’m exceptionally lucky to have a supportive, flexible employer at Fair4All Finance, but it’s still been a wildly tough juggle. I very much hope to return to new governance roles in the future, but for now, I’m embracing the chance to lighten the load and try doing fewer things well. #charitygovernance #chair

At the beginning of the 16 Days of Activism, the STOP Domestic Violence Conference was held in Adelaide, and OARS Community Transitions Deputy CEO Louise Kelly had the opportunity to present and share some information about the Don't Become That Man program we are currently operating for men on Remand in Adelaide Remand Centre. The program is funded by the Office For Women Department of Human Services SA, as part of the National Partnerships Funding. In the first 10 months of the program, 141 groups have been run, with 628 participant occasions throughout that period. The program operates as a brief intervention, engaging men at a pivotal time in the cycle of violence where the legal system is active in promoting accountability for use of violence, abuse or control against a partner / family member, facilitating motivation to change and reflect on recent actions resulting in incarceration. This opportunity cannot be overstated as it leaves the men with a positive imprint of these experience, increasing the odds of future engagement with therapeutic programs aimed at changing violent attitudes, actions and behaviours. Some recent feedback from program participants has included; 👉 The group has “been helpful in areas I needed to work on”. 👉 Noticed positive changes in the other group participants throughout the week. 👉 People within the group were checking in with each other while back in the units. 👉 The stages of change activity really opened my eyes to my life, and the cycle I’ve been on. 👉 I have told the whole unit about it and encouraged them to join it when they can. The Don't Become That Man team can be reached on 1300 24 34 13, Monday - Friday, 2pm-7pm #DontBecomeThatMan #Remand #DFV #PeopleUsingViolence #16Days #16DaysOfActivism #EnhancingCommunityWellbeing #ReducingOffending #ReducingVictimisation Serco

The conclusion of this year's #16DaysOfActivism Against Gender-Based Violence coincides with Human Rights Day. This day is a powerful reminder of how human rights are a pathway to solutions, playing a critical role as a preventative, protective and transformative force for good. At Brisbane Youth Service, we see firsthand how the power of human rights can transform lives. For the young people we work with, particularly those experiencing or at risk of homelessness due to domestic and family violence (DFV), claiming their rights means having access to age-appropriate supports, securing safe housing, breaking the cycle of violence, and building healthy relationships. Through our trauma-informed services, like our Young Women, Families and Safe Relationships programs, we support young people to heal, reclaim control and develop the skills they need to to navigate life’s challenges with confidence. We believe that when young people are empowered to know and assert their rights, they can thrive in their communities and create the futures they deserve. This 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence, Human Rights Day and beyond, we stand with young people to build a world where their rights are respected, protected and fulfilled. #NewFutures #HumanRightsDay #OurRightsOurFuture #EndGenderBasedViolence

The \'How to be a Community Advocate and Make Change\' course empowered me to become an effective advocate for my community. Through learning from experienced advocates like Nazir Afzal OBE, I gained insights into the importance of listening to community needs and working collaboratively to bring about positive change. The course equipped me with practical tools and principles essential for advocacy work, regardless of my field of study or background. By applying these skills, I can make meaningful contributions to addressing issues such as violence against women, child exploitation, and more. This course not only inspired me but also provided a roadmap to make a tangible impact in my community. #humansofmcrmetrise

The 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence (GBV) is an annual international campaign that runs from November 25 (International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women) to December 10 (International Human Rights Day). This campaign aims to raise awareness and mobilize people to take action to end gender-based violence, which includes physical, emotional, sexual, and economic violence directed at individuals based on their gender. The 16 days serve as a call to action to end violence in all forms and promote the rights of women, children, and vulnerable groups. Activities during this period include public education, community outreach, policy advocacy, and providing support for survivors of violence. If you're involved in activism or planning events during this time, it's a great opportunity to raise awareness and engage your community in discussions about the importance of ending gender-based violence and ensuring the safety and dignity of all individuals.
