🤔 Why do I do what I do? 📖 Books have always been a part of my life. I've always enjoyed reading so, naturally, working in publishing was an obvious choice. 🏳️🌈 But working with queer literature is so important to me. I didn't have queer books growing up because of Section 28. I didn't see people like me in books. That's why I want to make sure LGBTQ+ representation in books is authentic and accurate. 🏳️🌈 Growing up queer can be lonely for some. In my book 𝘘𝘶𝘦𝘦𝘳 𝘍𝘭𝘰𝘶𝘳𝘪𝘴𝘩𝘪𝘯𝘨, I write about ten "queer superpowers" that I've identified in my adult development research—adaptive patterns and postures developed by LGBTQ+ individuals to navigate the adversities they face. One of them is Chameleonic Passing. It is a queer superpower that enables us to shape-shift or put on a cloak of invisibility to avoid unwanted attention and allow others to imagine we're one of them. This superpower emerges early in our development when faced by threats of mocking, shunning, shaming, or violent attack. Later in life, we might use it to fit in at a new employer or with different social groups or among relatives. When overused, we lose touch with our distinctive characteristics, talents, and points of view. The most critical space for LGBTQ+ inclusion in the workplace are schools. Most LGBTQ+ bullying starts in schools, social norms are learnt at schools and students find their agency and voice as budding adults at schools. If your child is old enough to tease and traumatise another child, they are likely old enough to learn about LGBTQ+ inclusion. Schools also need LGBTQ+ teachers. Normalisation requires role models and representation. If you fear that learning about LGBTQ+ community is going to confuse your child, you may perhaps need some of that education yourself. #PRIDE #lgbtq #inclusion

What is #OwnVoices writing and how does it impact LGBTQ+ publishing? This week, I'm going to look at #OwnVoices writing and my thoughts around it. We think of #OwnVoices writing as authentic writing, written by members of the LGBTQ+ community. Because they have lived experience, the expectation is that it is better, more authentic writing. While I agree, LGBTQ+ people have to have space to tell their stories, #OwnVoices isn't the only thing that matters. There are plenty of steps in the publishing process where authenticity and accuracy can be checked. Editors and authenticity (sensitivity) readers can be used, for example.
