The United Nations Pact for the future is very significant, it opens the door for further legal action and government decisions to uphold the rights of children and future generations, it’s not a fix but it’s a significant moment of commitment in the long term struggle for a fairer more sustainable future

The Pact for the Future (Strengthening of the United Nations system. Draft resolution submitted by the President of the General Assembly): Action 32. We will protect, build on and complement Indigenous, traditional and local knowledge. 56. We recognize the need for science, technology and innovation to be adapted and made relevant to local needs and circumstances, including for local communities, traditional Afrodescendent populations, and Indigenous Peoples, in line with the principle of free, prior and informed consent, as appropriate. We decide to: (a) Foster synergies between science and technology and traditional, local, Afrodescendent and Indigenous knowledge, systems, practices and capacities.

Yesterday, Wilhelmiina Koivuniemi from Helsinki EU Office gave her presentation “EU guidelines 2024-2029 in climate and sustainability policy” in webinar organized by Päijät-Hämeen liitto and LAB University of Applied Sciences. In her presentation she analyzed the significance of the EU election result for climate and sustainability measures. Her main messages were: 💡Climate and sustainability themes are more bind to the EU’s security and competitiveness policies in the following years. 💡It is more difficult for EU Parliament’s parties to find suitable allies for legislative work, especially in climate and sustainability issues, and more compromises are expected. 💡The best time for regions and other relevant stakeholders to influence on EU climate policies is NOW before the commission presents its new financial framework by the end of June 2025. The webinar was organized as a part of the Interreg Europe funded ClimateGO project.
