Tomorrow, the .eu Day, our flagship event powered by EURid, in cooperation with European Internet Forum and EuroDIG - European Dialogue on Internet Governance, will place the spotlight on digital policy and will open up the debate on the grand idea of a trusted and secure internet for all Europeans. Internet governance directly impacts the way all of us Europeans access, use, and benefit from the internet. That's why we decided to organise the .eu Day with the participation of key stakeholder groups - from policy-makers and international organisations to the .eu community and the young generation. Because together we shape the future of our united digital Europe that strives towards a positive impact on society, economy, and human rights. The event is kindly hosted by MEP Marina Kaljurand! 🔸”Wind of change” was the motto of the conference organised by the EUROPEUM Brussels Office (see https://lnkd.in/dyr4AtH5 ) about the changing role of Central Europe within the EU. The countries of this region have common features, therefore common interests as well. 🔸The Central European region so far is significantly underrepresented in the European debates. The greater growth potential should have been factored in by the Draghi report. However, among hundreds of sources of the Draghi report, perhaps just one originated from the Eastern EU countries. 🔸Central Europeans should develop a coordinated strategy and representation ahead of the upcoming debates on the EU MFF. CE countries are stakeholders in Cohesion Policy as well as CAP. However, these items cannot remain the sole focus of CE efforts. For example, there should be an endeavour to increase participation in Horizon Europe. More elements of my intervention here: https://lnkd.in/dP-zTkM5

On 13-14 June 2024, at the Hungarian Pre-Presidency Conference, the Trans European Policy Studies Association (TEPSA) will present key recommendations to the incoming Hungarian Presidency of the Council of the EU. Together with my colleague Louise van Schaik, I have drafted a piece with recommendations on the issue of budgetary conditionality and the next long-term EU budget. It is likely that in the future, the allocation of EU funds to Member States will become increasingly conditional on reforms, for example with regard to the rule of law, socio-economic policies and the green and digital transition. Yet, there is not yet sufficient evidence that such a ‘cash-for-reforms’ model is effective in guaranteeing long-term change. Moreover, the instruments suffer from some democratic shortcomings, for example related to lack of transparency and clarity of procedures. Read our recommendations (page 4-6) and other recommendations here. 📍1st day of the Team Europe Direct France 🇫🇷 seminar 📍 With the European elections just six weeks away, this seminar is taking place at the heart of the European institutional system: the European Commission . The seminar brought together a rich network of people from a wide range of backgrounds to meet with European Commission officials and encourage rich and fruitful discussions on major European issues. A succession of fascinating presentations by : ✅ Renaud Soufflot de Magny, ✅ Bernard Schembri, ✅ Hanane Gassot. One of the themes that particularly caught my attention on Day 1 was the enlargement of the #EuropeanUnion (EU), a complex subject with numerous political, economic, legal and cultural implications. Since its creation, the EU has undergone numerous enlargements, the most notable of which took place in 2004, 2007 and 2013, with the accession of countries from Central and Eastern Europe, as well as Croatia: these expansions have transformed the EU's political landscape. The question of whether the EU should continue its enlargement process is a complex one, giving rise to debate in political, economic and civil society circles. While the enlargement process can be credited with promoting democracy and human rights, a degree of geopolitical stability or economic growth, and strengthening the EU's influence as a power, it nevertheless poses a real risk to the EU's cohesion, as well as numerous governance challenges. European enlargement needs to be carefully thought through, taking into account the potential benefits as well as the challenges. It was a wonderful opportunity for me to examine in greater depth Switzerland's relationship with the #EU and the implications of enlargement for #Switzerland, even though the country is not part of the accession process. The EU enlargement process may lead to numerous pressures and adjustments to bilateral agreements or closer cooperation in areas where Switzerland wishes to maintain its independence. Switzerland will need to continue to assess the potential benefits and challenges of EU expansion while maintaining its own national interests. It was a fascinating day, which ended with a keynote speech by Antoine Kasel. ** Celebrating Europe Day: A journey of unity and progress ** As May 9th swiftly approaches, we stand on the threshold of a significant day in European history – Europe Day, an annual celebration marking the Schuman Declaration of 1950, the cornerstone of the European Union as we know it today. The European Union has grown from its original six founding members – Belgium, France, Germany, Italy, Luxembourg, and the Netherlands – to encompass 27 member states, fostering cooperation, collaboration, and peace across the continent. From a legal standpoint, the European Union plays a central role in shaping laws and policies that affect the daily lives of its citizens. The EU has its own legal system, which includes regulations, directives, and treaties that govern various aspects of European integration, such as trade, competition, environmental protection, and human rights. For businesses operating in Europe, understanding EU law is essential for compliance and success in the single market. As we anticipate Europe Day tomorrow, let us reflect on the journey of European integration and the values it represents. In the face of challenges, let solidarity and cooperation guide our path forward, ensuring a brighter future for all Europeans. Let's unite in celebration of our shared heritage and commitment to a prosperous, peaceful Europe. #EuropeDay #EUHistory #EULaw
