🚨 Exciting News! 🚨
Thrilled to announce that our Gamcorp paper, "Impact of Rooftop Solar Array Installation on Large Scale Buildings," by Jianzeng Geng & Martin Gamble, has been accepted for the Australian Structural Engineering Conference (ASEC) 2024! 🌞🏗️
In the solar industry, much attention is given to the impact on secondary roof structures during installation. However, primary structures - like rafters and columns - are often overlooked due to budget constraints and the assumption that the load from solar panels is minimal.
For large-scale buildings, especially warehouses with long rafter spans, this assumption can lead to significant structural implications. Our paper highlights that many of these buildings, designed before the National Construction Code 2022 (NCC 2022), often aren’t equipped to handle the additional load from solar arrays.
We dive into the effects of rooftop solar on both gravity and wind loads, with key insights on how tilted installations can increase wind pressure. The study outlines when a primary structure assessment is essential, factoring in rafter span, rafter spacing, wind pressure, and roof pitch.
This research reinforces the need for qualified structural engineers to assess potential risks and ensure the long-term safety and stability of buildings with solar installations.
Stay tuned for more at ASEC 2024! Let's continue to push for safe, sustainable energy solutions. 🌿⚡
