In a report carried out by Portuguese TV channel, RTP, as part of World Nurses' Day, the spotlight was also on a solution developed by Fraunhofer Portugal AICOS: a software-based solution designed to support clinical decision/action solutions for monitoring and treating wounds. This technology was developed in partnership with F3M and Universidade Católica Portuguesa - Centro Regional do Porto. At minute 18'28, you can see images of the application created by our researchers. Full report at https://lnkd.in/dJuQkGJR. The Clinical Wound Support solution was designed for two types of users: - a mobile application for healthcare providers in the area of wounds, capable of capturing images of wounds, including differentiated clinical information about them, which makes it possible to increase the effectiveness of wound monitoring and improve the reliability of its characterisation, as well as supporting the selection of the appropriate therapeutic intervention; - a web platform for health unit managers, responsible for integrating the data acquired in terms of wound evolution according to the therapy implemented, in order to identify the most promising options in terms of evaluation and management costs. The research is now continuing in order to validate the solution created, within the Health for Portugal project (#HfPT): https://lnkd.in/d-pZKnyG. #remarkabletechnology #impactinglives #woundsupport

I am delighted to be invited to the launch event of the Selecting for Excellence 10-year review, held in the Cholmondeley Room and Terrace at the House of Lords. This project tackles crucial challenges faced by medical schools, particularly the need to improve social mobility within the profession an area the 2012 Social Mobility and Child Poverty Commission highlighted that medicine lags behind other sectors in. Access to university education and healthcare careers must not remain the privilege of a select few. Medical schools bear a collective responsibility to level the playing field, ensuring individuals from all backgrounds—irrespective of socio-economic status or protected characteristics—can realise their potential. This mission requires sustained investment in outreach programs that employ relatable role models to inspire and raise aspirations. By fostering inclusivity, we can empower non-traditional students to see higher education and careers in healthcare as attainable, thereby creating a more equitable and effective medical profession. Only by addressing these disparities, expanding the talent pool, and cultivating the best doctors to serve our increasingly diverse communities can we build a truly representative healthcare profession capable of addressing and more importantly, reducing health inequalities.

The inaugural 'Innovations in Allied Health Hospital Workforce National Conference' was held recently. This was a La Trobe University School of Allied Health, Human Services & Sport, and Alfred Health event, supported by the La Trobe University Embedded Allied Health Research Network (LEARN). Over 500 people registered to attend the conference, which aimed to understand challenges associated with the Australian allied health hospital workforce, and strategies working towards addressing related practice, knowledge and research gaps. Alfred Health Chief Executive Officer Adam Horsburgh and La Trobe University's Head of Clinical Education A/Prof Matthew Oates opened the conference. Presenters included both Australia's and Victoria's Chief Allied Health Officers, representation from Victoria's Department of Health, the CEO of the Victorian Healthcare Association, and Directors/Deputy Directors of Allied Health, Chief Allied Health Officers and Allied Health Discipline Managers from The Alfred, Northern, Eastern, Barwon Health, Royal Melbourne and Royal Children's Hospitals and the Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre. Research presentations covered topics including allied health assistants, international workforce perspectives, the rural health workforce, and allied health clinical skills development and wellbeing. The conference led to over 70 new members joining the Australian Allied Health Hospital Workforce Research Network.

ENOS is thrilled to announce the publication of our joint Call for Action on "Enabling Cross-Sectoral Approaches for Healthy Lifestyles in Europe" as part of the HL4EU Erasmus+ project! 🇪🇺🤸♀️ As partner of HL4EU, we firmly believe that promoting healthy lifestyles is not just a responsibility, but a collective mission that requires collaboration across sectors and borders. Our Call for Action underscores this belief and outlines key strategies to foster healthier lifestyles across Europe. 🤝 🤸♀️ A healthier future evidently requires collective action. We, therefore, invite all committed stakeholders to endorse this Call for Action and join us in calling on the European Union to enable and foster greater cross-sectoral approaches to healthy lifestyles across Europe. 👐🤸🏻♀️ 🇪🇺Increase EU funding and initiatives, and their accessibility, that support multisectoral collaboration and coordination platforms dedicated to healthy lifestyle promotion; ⚕️Integrate physical activity promotion into clinical practice through screening, counselling, and referral programs. 🔍Conduct research to identify effective strategies for increasing physical activity and reducing sedentary behaviour at the population level. 🚲Implement policies to create supportive environments for physical activity, such as urban planning initiatives, transportation policies, and school-based programmes. ⛹️Mobilise communities to provide accessible and safe spaces for physical activity, including parks, active mobility infrastructures, and recreational facilities (both private and public). I'm looking forward to speaking next week in Munich at the meeting on Research With Vulnerable People and the revision of the Declaration of Helsinki co-organised by the German National Academy of Sciences (Leopoldina) and the German Medical Association (GMA), in collaboration with the World Medical Association (WMA) and the American Medical Association (AMA), and with kind support from the State Chamber of Physicians of Bavaria. There is an excellent lineup of speakers including Urban Wiesing, Pierre Mermet-Bouvier, Florencia Luna, Samia Hurst-Majno, Rieke van der Graaf, Hilary Marston, Steffen Thirstrup, Adam Berger, Mohammed Ghaly and others. I will talk about the conditions under which vulnerable groups should be included in medical research. A major theme of my book is the critical role for research with human participants in ensuring that health systems function effectively, efficiently and equitably. When people who are at elevated risk of being harmed or wronged in research also have distinctive health needs, excluding them from research on protectionist grounds can create or perpetuate knowledge gaps that undermine the equitable function of health systems. This focus on aligning research with the effective, efficient, and equitable functioning of health systems shifts the default from one of exclusion to one of inclusion and focuses the underlying concern that motivated protectionism on ensuring that research is both scientifically sound and organized on terms that respects the fundamental interests of study participants. https://lnkd.in/e2Q_zxBq

Publication alert ! 📑 🔍 New Insights on Nutritional Adequacy in Post-ICU Patients In critical care, ensuring adequate energy and protein intake is crucial for patient recovery. It not only enhances survival chances but also preserves muscle mass and shortens hospital stay. While we have robust data on nutrition adequacy within the ICU, there’s been limited research into how well these nutritional needs are met once patients leave the ICU. 💡 Our Systematic Review: We conducted a review across studies from 1990 to 2023, examining data from randomized and observational studies on feeding adequacy in post-ICU patients. Here’s what we found: 🔸 Studies: Few available studies with large variety in methods used to determine nutritional requirements. 🔸 Energy Adequacy: Ranged widely from 52% to 102%. 🔸 Protein Adequacy: Generally lower, between 63% and 86%. 🔸 Barriers: Unintended removal of feeding tubes leads often to interruptions in nutritional intake. 📈 Takeaway: While methods vary for calculating energy and protein needs, our findings show that feeding adequacy remains a challenge post-ICU, with consistent protein underfeeding. Standardized reporting and larger studies are essential to improve post-ICU nutritional care and outcomes. Let’s continue pushing for consistent and comprehensive nutrition protocols to give post-ICU patients the best shot at recovery.
